edit: Bo Jackson's injury was caused by a lack of bloodflow to his hip - not sure if that was caused by the injury or pre-existing, but unlikely Gore will have the same problem. Still odd injury, so you have to wonder why it happened.

Not to be disrespectful to Gore, because he is a premiere player in this league and I love watching him run - but this injury really helps the Packers next week. They will be forced to throw more with their inaccurate quarterback. Only thing that concerns me is containing Smith. The Packers had troubling containing Vick running, but they also didn't game plan for him. I can't wait to see what Capers throws at Smith and the 49er's horrible offense.

I'm surprised this injury doesn't happen more often with the bigger backs. The ONLY way to tackle Gore is to hit him in the legs. PFT mentioned that the break was actually a crack, but when it is in a bone that is as load-bearing as the hip a crack can't be good. I'm also surprised that Favre hasn't broken his hip yet. It's a common injury among the elderly.

Nonetheless, now we only have to gameplan for Troy Smith, which should be fairly easy. He's Michael Vick without the good decision, accuracy, and arm. Too bad the 49ers won last weekend, because we could have had ourselves another coach run out of town.

i think Bo had to have a full blown hip replacement because of it. THATS what ended his career

Yes he did replacement surgery. But the original injury (avascular necrosis) caused him to lose the blood supply to the head of his femur (so says wikipedia, I remember it being loss of blood supply to the pelvic bone, but you get the idea). That meant that eventually the bone in the joint would decay and crack further, even after healing as a new blood supply could not be established. If Gore hasn't suffered that much trauma, he might be OK.

yup...dislocated hip that never healed. it looked pretty bad when it happened too.
