Capers' defense successful despite Packers' many injuries (http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/111304909.html)

In what seems like a leftover article from his last Defensive article, McGinn reveals some great tidbits about what the defense is doing.

-- Base D on early downs (vs. run) its 3-4 package with a safety down. Its man coverage except for that safety.

-- On 3rd down, its a mix of coverages now compared to earlier in the season. Perry says opposing teams should not be able to get a read on 3rd down pass tendencies. Whitt says improved communication has limited long pass TDs and blown assignments.

-- Red Zone breakdown is a little soft, just mentions unpredictable and fewer TD passes completed.

-- Number of personnel packages (this seems to imply fronts as well) seems small even to Trgovac but they are able to bring pressure from numbers and multiple positions.

-- wist aggravation special: number of 3 man rushes is up

-- Matthews has 4 sacks from the traditional standpoint of beating the tackle from the edge.

-- Packers versus running backs average 90 and 4.05 per game. McGinn seems satisfied and repeats Capers mantra of stopping the run being the key. He doesn't mention that both these totals are worse than last year. See my run D thread for more on this.

-- Capers reviews film the night after the game. He prepares the review for the coaches, who arrive at the facility at 5 AM. Dom sleeps in his office that night.
