Wow. I don't know what Christmas gifts Bob bought the coaches, but he has had four straight weeks of good information about the team with input from the coaches. Maybe everyone is celebrating Bedard leaving town (though Greg had a nifty catfight that involved Trgovac backing John Fox versus the naysayers a few weeks ago and had another big get last week that made PFT from his new gig).

This week McGinn flat calls out Woodson's decline in coverage everywhere, but especially outside. Has quotes from other coaches saying they look to take advantage of this matchup and points out the Atlanta (slot versus Douglas) and Dallas (outside versus Austin) games where Woodson was saved from defeated coverage by poor throws. He also highlights the defeat by Calvin Johnson versus Detroit. Tramon had been following Johnson everywhere when not in base.

McGinn has the Packers in base 3-4 15% of all snaps and this formation is the only one where Woodson must be outside in coverage. He points out that Tramon has taken many of the individual number one receiver matchups in several games when possible. And that Tramon and Shields are always outside when not in base.

Bob does forget to mention that much the same dynamic existed last year before Harris was hurt and even predated Capers arrival when Harris would take the oppositions number one receiver. However, it does definitely look as though Woodson's coverage has slipped. One other factor mentioned are injuries, which McGinn deems no more serious than last year. From that, he wonders why Woodson's practice time has dwindled. Odds are that Wood is hurt worse than publicly known (toe maybe?).

There is praise for Woodson's toughness (tackling and taking on blockers), versatility (pass rush) and big play ability (forced fubles, sixth sense about INTs).

Bob finishes with a guess that the Packers will be drafting CBs and another guess that Wood would resist being moved to safety.

Link is insider only but it sounds like you summed it up well. Thanks.

I would "quote" more extensively, but do not want to infringe on copyrighted material. Beside the GC still does not seem to be open for business.

One other contrary point should be made. Woodson has been touted as the beneficiary of Caper's defense since he was hired and part of that thinking was that Woodson would be used all over the field for all sorts of purposes. Capers said it, McGinn said it, and I think one of the position coaches flat out compared his role to Polamalu's. So obviously some of what we see with Woodson is by design. But the amount of nickel coverage this year has been very high compared to previous years. Other than this, we have seen no speculation about why that has changed.

And there seems to be no question Wood's coverage has come down a peg or two.

The other odd piece is that his coaches all said Woodson has been better than ever at sticking with a coverage and not bailing to freelance somewhere else. That fact alone may be helping the defense overall but sacrificing some of his big plays.
