Rodgers gets advice from Starr, Warner, Young — but not Favre

Posted by Michael David Smith on February 1, 2011, 3:08 PM EST
http://nbcprofootballtalk.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/favre1.jpg?w=250Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=3118) was effusive in his gratitude today as he talked about three Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks who have helped him in his preparation for his own first Super Bowl. But he offered just a one-word answer when asked whether he has spoken this week to his Super Bowl-winning Green Bay predecessor.
Rodgers said that Bart Starr, who led the Packers to victories in the first two Super Bowls, has served as a mentor to him.
“It’s a privilege,” Rodgers said. “Bart has been incredible to me — in the last three years especially — with the e-mails and conversations that I’ve been able to share with him. He’s an incredible man and a guy I’d love to model my career after.”
Rodgers also talked about his relationships with Kurt Warner and Steve Young, two former Super Bowl MVPs who have encouraged Rodgers to keep his focus on football and not on everything else that goes along with Super Bowl week.
“They said, ‘Good luck with the distractions,’” Rodgers said of his conversations with Warner and Young. “There’s going to be a lot of different things that could disrupt your week if you let them, but they said just focus on keeping your preparation the same.”
And then the subject turned to Brett Favre. Asked if he has talked to Favre about preparing for the Super Bowl, Rodgers simply answered, “No.”
So Rodgers is preparing for the Super Bowl with the support of some quarterbacks who have been there before. But without any encouragement from the quarterback he backed up for the first three years of his career.

I think putting shaving cream into a guy's shoes when he's away from his locker counts as a kind of mentoring.

That's lofty company A-Rod's keeping.

Rodgers has a chance to do something that a lot of guys don't - win the big game with class.

He's a star now, just one win away from superstardom. What a story book ending it would be in this chapter of his life if he finishes with a SB win and the MVP award. Go Pack!

How will Rodgers ever learn how to point a camera at his woody, focus it, snap the shot, get the cell phone numbers, and caption the pics properly?

Well, back in the day, that took a lot of manual adjustments, correct film speed, f stop and of course a proper lens. Brett had to take some classes at the local UW-Extension to learn all the variables.

But today, the cell phone does all that for you. So ARod will be OK in the self-portrait sense.

It is kind of sad, really, that Rodgers hasn't talked to the guy that was his team mate for 3 years. I guess just another sign of how wrong things went.

21 for 21 interceptions in 1975.

Packers’ Coach Dan Devine's trade for Los Angeles Rams quarterback John Hadl after the sixth game of the 1974 season is one of the most infamous in Packers history. Devine gave up five draft picks — a first, second and third in '75 and first and third in '76 — for the 34-year-old veteran. Hadl would play just 1-1/2 seasons for the Packers, throwing 3 touchdowns and 8 interceptions for a 54.0 quarterback rating in 1974 and 6 touchdowns and 21 interceptions for a 52.8 rating in 1975. Devine resigned at the end of the '74 season.

You know, Devine was so bad as a GM it may be that his dog shot itself to escape the embarrassment.

Didn't Bert practically do that in one game against the Rams in the playoffs?

I remember when we were all over at JSO and the migrations that led HH and Mad to start this place fondly. I remember how our biggest beef with Bert was the occasional boneheaded throw, and yeah, we were pissed about it, but he was ours. Looking at this thread is a token of how a once loved hero to the people of Packer Nation has utterly blown his legacy. He went from being Brett to Brent to Bert.

Now, compare the that to the everlasting Bart and tell me Bert isn't a fool.

For lifelong Packer fans, the team is always bigger than any individual. Bart Starr, as good as he was, always got this. So did almost every Packer legend.

Sheeet, lifelong Packer fans have had there share of legends leave and suit up for other teams, but I haven't read any bitterness about Vince or Reggie since I've been a fan. Bert just totally blew it. I dunno how long we fans will be able to cheer this array of players, but I know I still cheer for Kampy, who left because he didn't want to play 3-4 OLB or Al Harris if he decides to play again.

Such a waste of a great hero.

Tarlam, seriously you are getting almost as bad as JH. Rodgers keeps it real, but classy. He isn't going to discuss Favre, or anything else that is going to have a negative spin this week.

I wonder if Rodgers is going to write a book if wins a Super Bowl? I wonder if Ted Thompson will write a book?
