Players get into fights at practice Thursday

Training camp is merely two weeks old and tempers were starting to flare on Thursday morning. Rookie offensive lineman Tony Moll and linebacker Nick Barnett got into a brief shoving match during team drills. Later, rookie defensive end Johnny Jolly and tackle Josh Bourke got into a more heated exchange and had to be pulled apart by teammates.

McCarthy says team "leg weary"

Highlights from Packers coach Mike McCarthy’s press conference following practice Wednesday morning:

* On why the team didn’t practice in full pads as originally scheduled: “Every practice is to be determined. When you get to this point in training camp …obviously the guys are a little leg weary. We’re just being smart from a health standpoint.”

* McCarthy said running back Ahman Green, who didn’t practice Wednesday, hasn’t suffered a setback in his rehabilitation from a torn quadriceps tendon last fall. “The plan is with him is to go through the jog through and then his day is split up between individual drills and rehab,” said McCarthy.

* On former Packers quarterback and head coach Bart Starr being in attendance at practice Wednesday: “It’s an honor to have Bart here. He’s going to speak to our team today and he’s going to talk about the history and tradtiion of the Green Bay Packers. We’re all looking forward to that.”

* On middle linebacker Nick Barnett expressing an unwillingness to move to the outside: “I understand how Nick feels. Frankly when a decision is to be made, we’ll talk to the player first. A lot of that is kind of unnecessary, his reaction to it. He’ll be the first to know if there ever is a consideration for a position change.”

* On defensive tackle Colin Cole: “He probably has been the most consistent interior lineman.”

* On safety Tyrone Culver: “He’s definitely moving up the depth chart in the safety area.”

* McCarthy said receiver Greg Jennings, who was injured Monday, suffered a hip flexor and his status is “day to day.”

* On receiver/returner Cory Rodgers struggling to catch punts: "He’s a young football player. That’s why we’re in training camp. It’s obvious he needs to continue to improve. He’s putting in extra time. we’ll just stay the course.”

* On who the No. 1 punt returner is: “We’ll probably talk more about that the next few days and we’ll see that Saturday night (in the exhibition opener at San Diego).”
