Vonn, Riesch set for 4-day, 4-race World Cup duel

By GRAHAM DUNBAR, AP Sports Writer 3 hours, 45 minutes ago

LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland (AP)—

Four days, four races.

Lindsey Vonn and Maria Riesch are ready to begin their showdown Wednesday for the overall World Cup title. After 31 races, four more at the World Cup finals will decide if Vonn wins her fourth straight title or Riesch, the current leader, wins an elusive first.

The best friends have elevated their rivalry to new heights this season, their closest contest yet for the giant crystal globe trophy. The finals start with their strongest event (downhill) and end Saturday with their weakest (giant slalom).
Germany's Maria Riesch speeds down the course on her way to clock the eleventh fastest time during a training session for the alpine ski, World Cup women's downhill final, in Lenzerheide, Switzerland , Tuesday, March 15, 2011.

“This is crunch time. I’m sure it’s going to come down to the last race,” Vonn predicted Tuesday.

Riesch has been runner-up the past two years, but the German has never led so late in the season.

“That would be great tension until the end, to decide it in the GS on Saturday, but we will see,” said Riesch, a double Olympic champion whose 23-point advantage can quickly vanish with race victories worth 100 points.

“It would be a great dream coming true,” she added. “But, if not, then maybe next year or the year after. I don’t have to do this now.”

Alpine racing has not had such a finish since Sweden’s Anja Paerson edged Croatia’s Janica Kostelic by three points in 2005. On the same Lenzerheide slope, Kostelic would have won had she been 0.09 seconds faster in the GS finale.

Vonn smiled while thinking of the number-crunching permutations.

“I’ve run a couple of scenarios through my mind how it could play out differently,” she said. “I can’t control what Maria’s doing, but I can control my skiing. So I’m going to give it my best shot.”

The American arrives with fresh momentum after gaining ground last weekend. A career-best third place in GS at the Czech resort Splinderuv Mlyn was followed by a solid slalom result, with Riesch surprisingly skiing out.

“As you saw last weekend, anything can happen. I have to keep the same approach, and ski with intensity, focus and determination,” said Vonn, who has already won the downhill, super-G and super-combined discipline titles.

Riesch reflected it was “not easy to keep cool” amid talk of her shrinking lead.

“It can go so fast from 96 (points) to 23. I try to just concentrate on my skiing and not calculate the points too much,” she said.

Lindsey Vonn took the lead from Maria Riesch in their duel for the overall World Cup title on Wednesday, finishing fourth behind winner Julia Mancuso in the final downhill of the season.

Vonn earned 50 race points for her lowest downhill finish this season, while Riesch failed to score after placing 17th. Riesch's cautious run left her a surprising 3.19 seconds behind Mancuso.

Vonn took a 27-point lead over her friend and rival with three races left this week. Vonn is looking for her fourth straight overall title after already earning the downhill discipline title.

"I'm really happy with fourth place," said Vonn, who lost time early in her run then fought back on the steep bottom section. "I think it was a solid performance and another exciting day in the hunt for the overall."

The 26-year-old Riesch of Germany slumped to the snow in the finish area, and was later shown on television sitting with her head in her hands in the equipment inspection hut.

"It's tough when you have led the whole season and suddenly you get knocked off the top," Riesch said.

Skiing several minutes later, Vonn also looked uncomfortable at times on the steep, twisting course. But she raised her right fist triumphantly at the finish when she saw she stood in third place.

LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland (Reuters) - Lindsey Vonn's hopes of a fourth successive overall World Cup title were left at the mercy of the weather after she lost the lead to Maria Riesch on Friday with one race to go.

Germany's Riesch enjoys a three-point lead, a miniscule margin in a contest where 100 are awarded for a win, effectively meaning the title will go to whoever does better in Saturday's giant slalom.

Vonn's big worry, however, is that the race will not take place at all after a week which has seen three races called off due to the unhappy combination of mist, rain and warm weather.

Due to logistical problems, World Cup races are not rescheduled if they are called off by the weather, a rule introduced in 1998 by the International Ski Federation (FIS).

If the last race of the season is affected, the trophy goes to whoever is leading the standings at the time.

Vonn 1st American to win 4 overall World Cup titles
Vail racer wins giant slalom in Sweden to clinch
March, 9 2012
Oliver Grassman
Associated Press
ARE, Sweden — Lindsey Vonn became the first American to clinch four overall World Cup titles Friday by winning a giant slalom race, moving into second on the all-time list behind Austrian great Annemarie Moser-Proell.

Vonn took the lead after the first run and finished in 2 minutes, 28.0 seconds. Federica Brignone of Italy was second, 0.48 behind, followed by Olympic champion Viktora Rebensburg of Germany.

Vonn was tied with Phil Mahre of the United States with three overall World Cup titles. Moser-Proell won six overall titles in the 1970s, and Luxemburg's Marc Girardelli has five.

"I don't know what to say," an emotional Vonn said. "I just wanted to have two aggressive runs today. I felt like I had nothing to lose and I was having fun. I'm just really excited, I'm thrilled. It's crazy."

Vonn won the overall title from 2008-2010. Last season Vonn just missed out on another, finishing three points behind Maria Hoefl-Riesch. The German won the overall title after the giant slalom race at the Lenzerheide finals was canceled because of soft snow conditions.

"It's definitely a lot less stressful to clinch the overall title before the finals. Last year at the (Lenzerheide) finals, I might have lost a few years of my life," Vonn said with a smile.

With this overall title, Vonn surpasses Croatian Janica Kostelic, Swiss Vreni Schneider and Austrian Petra Kronberger, who all won three overall cups during their careers.

Vonn has 1,808 points for the season and, with five World Cup races remaining, looks set to achieve her goal of become the first woman to surpass 2,000 points. In 2006, Kostelic set the overall points record for women, amassing 1,970 points to claim the crystal globe.

"Anything is possible, but it's going to be really difficult," Vonn said. "I'm going to have to execute in every race and seize the opportunity like I did today.

"I've got three big chances to make the top three in the downhill, super-G and the GS (in Schladming). But I'm going to have to execute and make no mistakes."

Julia Mancuso of the United States finished eighth in the giant slalom on Friday, and teammate Resi Stiegler was 13th.

Vonn won her 52nd World Cup race with only her second victory in giant slalom. She won the season's opening giant slalom in Soelden in October to become the fifth woman to win a World Cup race in all five disciplines.

Vonn is third on the all-time list for World Cup wins behind Moser-Proell (62) and Schneider (55).

"This season, I've really found my rhythm in GS. It's been a great year," Vonn said.

Woods and Vonn a pair?

Woods and Vonn were unavailable to comment. Woods was in the middle of his round in a tournament in San Diego. Vonn was in Europe training.

So no date night tonight.

Vonn's publicist, Lewis Kay, issued a statement neither confirming or denying the, uh, link.

"Lindsey is currently in the midst of the World Cup season in Europe," the statement read. "Her focus is solely on competing and on defending her titles and thus she will not participate in any speculation surrounding her personal life at this time."

It's also disappointing for me that the Packers lost. I'm a native of Minnesota, but I'm a cheesehead. A lot of my extended family lives in Wisconsin. When I was growing up, it was always a big deal when the Packers played the Vikings. I'm not usually a fair-weather fan, but the Vikings haven't done that well for a long time, and since I moved from Minnesota to Vail I changed over to the Broncos and the Packers.

Ya, one article said where her break is shouldn't be a big deal, she just needs to take weight off her leg while it heals. But, how will that affect her rehab from the ACL surgery? Having had several in our household when our kids were still here (one daughter, then one son), they were up and on them, albeit with braces, very quickly, and were doing all sorts of exercises to regain freedom of motion.

At first I thought they might give the break a few weeks to heal before the ACL surgery, but then I saw an article reporting that the surgery will likely be this weekend.

She might want to consult Adrian Peterson for rehab advice.

Ahh come on guys. Do we know 'the real story'?

Maybe Tiger had his heart broken? A really bad marriage and selfish wife drove Tiger to a sexual addiction? Maybe, just maybe? The Tigers' Ex-Wife is a 'Gold Digger' and that became obvious and in Tigers face? He reacted to that carelessly.

Finally, Tiger feels somewhat better, feels more healed? He's cutting himself a break with 'the Snow Princess'? Lindsay is good to lend a hand. A happy ever after ending is shaping up before our eyes.

How 'in hell' would anyone know? It sure seems now, that he's having a really good time.

This is what really matters:

I hope he's able to pace himself and get set for the upcoming 2013 Masters Tournament the week of April 8, 2013.

I'm hoping to watch Tiger get it on in the final round of Arnold's Tournament at Bay Hill now.

There's a rain delay as it's raining cats and dogs.

At the begining of this delay he was finished at hole NO. 2 and -1 on the round to take a three stroke lead (-12) over tied for 2nd... Keegan Bradley,Ken Duke, John Huh and Rickie Fowler, all at -9 for the tournament.

the courses that they usually ski on are build for speed, with some high speed turns thrown in. at the olympics, the guy who designed the course (who was also the father and coach of a medal winner) set up a course that had a ton of tight curves that forced the skiers to lose all speed they had

its basically like taking a ferrari and throwing it in a traffic jam. speed no longer matters, so the slower less talented guys are now in the running.

it also doesn't help that the skiers don't get to ski on the coarse or try it out before its time to race, they just get to look at it. so obviously the kid whos dad/coach set the coarse up to suit his sons ability and told him all the little tricks, has the clear advantage

I’ve skied my whole life all over the world, but when my sons got into racing 4 years ago I felt like an absolute neophyte and still do when it comes to the sport of racing. There is so much to learn on the intricacies of it all when it comes to the fractions of seconds. I just write checks and wax and tune skis. Whenever I offer any advice I am quickly reminded that I never raced in my life.

You need to ask Freak Out about it…….

The irony is that we never saw much of the Olympics; always practicing or at races. I did catch a little of that Super G race (I think women) with that gate right after the jump……7 of the first 8 DNFed. That was strange to watch.

I know even at our level there is bickering about course set up. When the Junior Olympics are held in Colorado and the Vail Club is up to set courses, they are able to set in a manner that they have been practicing…….obviously the Midwestern kids are at multiple disadvantages; they can’t really practice speed events at all, and obviously not a specific course. But we (our club in particular) clean up in slalom because we can get in so many gates during the week. A rope tow and lights makes for very good training; lots and lots of repetition. Mountain kids actually come to Minneapolis over Christmas to practice for the week.

it was just weird to see, i watch ski jumping live every year and i've never seen artificial tracks before

ice on a ski run is also odd, cause in normal everyday skiing, solid ice is the last thing you ever want to be on

I guess the lesson here is that racing is a lot different than your weekend outing at the local ski hill. And that sports at the high end are just getting more extreme and specialized.

I missed the luge this year. I assume that's still some crazy people going down an ice tube on their backs on a midget sled with two blades between them and the ice.

There is no powder at all in racing.

That makes as their racing not skiing.

can someone explain to me how the process of putting salt on the snow prevents it from melting?

every X-country or biathlon event they showed they talked about how that course had been treated the night before with salt so the course wouldn't melt like all the other snow in the area. i think they might have also done this for downhill and snowboard events too

now, i've spent most of my life living in areas where we deal with snow and ice 6 months out of the year. if i know one thing, its that salt melts snow and ice

so what gives? were the nbc guys just full of shit talking about the salt preventing melting, or is there something else to it?

fertilizer too

the part that gets me is this

These ions lower the freezing point of the snow, which hardens the surface

i would have thought that lowering the freezing point, which would also lower the melting point, would turn it into more of a melted slushy mess.

thats just weird imo. i would have thought in order to save the ice and make it harder you would raise the freezing point, so that it would stay frozen at , lets say 40 degrees

i do remember them mentioning the use of urea, i got a chuckle and figured it must really smell like piss out there

Lindsey Vonn is back on top in just the second race of her comeback from a knee injury and a broken arm.

The American edged defending overall World Cup champion Lara Gut to win a downhill event in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, on Saturday and claim career victory No. 77, moving her within nine wins of the record held by Ingemar Stenmark.

Looks like she'll have a shot at another Olympics. 382 days away.

I saw that. I didn’t know she owned skis that long.

Being a slalom parent, I have followed her for awhile....I like her, seems pretty down to earth. This speed thing that happened this weekend is pretty interesting. USSA is really trying to develop technical stuff at a young age and let the speed come later.

I wish her well. Very well could eclipse Lindsey.

BTW, Tailgate Alaska is a big pilgrimage for snowboarders at Thompson Pass up there every March (evidently). I met the guy who founded it and runs it last Christmas Eve in Sun Valley. Really nice guy. A godfather of the sport I found out....although you’d never know it having a few drinks with him.

I read she will be skipping the Super G because of the compressed schedule. She will be doing the downhill though.

i'm not a fan of vonn

but that sucks having to go first with no practice runs

she had a great run till right at the end, afer she fucked it up the rest of the field knew to watch out for that corner

how do they not have practice runs?

no wonder why people die in the sport

They get to “inspect” in ski racing. Basically going down the course very slowly (slipping), but not through the gates. Usually a couple times if they want to

Cheesehead Craig

I also heard that given how compressed the schedule has become due to the weather delays, they simply don't have the time to allow the practice runs.

so when these guys and girls dropout of a race like this, did they get the spotover someone else who might have been thrilled to race in it

or is it a team thing, where once you're on the team you can do whatever events you want?

seems shitty if the top 3 from a country goes and then 1 or 2 of them decide not to race for that person that came in #4 or whatever in the trials

the biathlete from france is a beast, he shows that you don't have to take races off to recover or focus on another race

Lindsey announces retirement. https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2818771-lindsey-vonn-announces-retirement-from-professional-skiing?utm_source=cnn.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=editorial

Lindsey Vonn
10 hrs ·
The past two weeks have been some of the most emotionally challenging days of my life. I am struggling with the reality of what my body is telling me versus what my mind and heart believe I’m capable of. The unfortunate reality is my mind and body are not on the same page. After many sleepless nights, I have finally accepted that I cannot continue ski racing. I will compete at the World Championships in Downhill and Super-G next week in Åre, Sweden and they will be the final races of my career.

Over the past few years I have had more injuries and surgeries than I care to admit. I have always pushed the limits of ski racing and it has allowed me to have amazing success but also dramatic crashes. I have never wanted the storyline of my career to be about injuries and because of that I decided not to tell anyone that I underwent surgery this past spring. A large portion of cartilage that had delaminated from my bone was removed. My crash in Lake Louise last year was much more painful than I let on, but I continued to race because I wanted to win a medal in the Olympics for my late grandfather. Again, I rehabbed my way back this summer and I felt better than I had in a long time. Then I crashed in Copper this November and injured my left knee, tearing my LCL plus sustaining 3 fractures. Despite extensive therapy, training and a knee brace, I am not able make the turns necessary to compete the way I know I can. My body is broken beyond repair and it isn't letting me have the final season I dreamed of. My body is screaming at me to STOP and it’s time for me to listen.

At this point, arthritis is the least of my worries and I hope I can still ski with my kids some day. But even knowing what lies ahead for my body, it has still been worth it. I have always worked hard, fought back and dealt with whatever comes my way because I simply love skiing. At no point have I ever regretted my injuries, my comebacks, the therapy, the preparation and even the pain because in my mind it has always been worth it.

Honestly, retiring isn’t what upsets me. Retiring without reaching my goal is what will stay with me forever. However, I can look back at 82 World Cup wins, 20 World Cup titles, 3 Olympic medals, 7 World Championship medals and say that I have accomplished something that no other woman in HISTORY has ever done, and that is something that I will be proud of FOREVER! So please let my story be of comebacks, victories and even injuries, but do not tell my story as one of failures or unreached goals.

I always say, “Never give up!” So to all the the kids out there, to my fans who have sent me messages of encouragement to keep going… I need to tell you that I’m not giving up! I’m just starting a new chapter. Don’t lose faith in your dreams, keep fighting for what you love, and if you always give everything you have you’ll be happy no matter what the outcome.

Thank you for the amazing years, for supporting me through thick and thin, and for making my job so fun. Can’t wait to see some of you in the finish in Are where I will give it my all one last time.

Love always,
Lindsey
