We had a whippet before, but she freaked out when we had our second kid. Couldn't handle the drop in attention and I never really bonded with the little fucker, so she would mope around the house until my wife would come home, then go bonkers. Nice dog outside of the mental fragility.

I wanted a deerhound, but the house we ended up with doesn't have enough outdoor space to support such a beast and some of them have a tendency to want to eat cats, which my wife and I wouldn't mind, but our kid might be sad.

So now were considering a doberman, which are the dogs I grew up with as a kid, and a couple of other homo short haired shepard breeds my wife has found.

So share your impressions of your stupid dogs so that I might be impressed.

I have had many dogs in the past....my favorite was a huge Lab named Bufford....Kodiak was his kind of place and he needed room to roam. Super sweet and would never hurt a soul....loved to swim in the ocean for the fowl I shot. The other was a weird mutt blend of ridgeback and chow my brother found...sweet dog that loved to roam and adventure..only barked at bears.

There's only one type of dog you should get - especially with kids. You just have to decide: Black, Yellow or Chocolate. But I'm not a racist; I love beagles too. Jack Russell terriers are a lot of fun for older kids who don't pull on tails. I also love dachshunds, but they are pretty high strung and yappy.

Make that three. I have a crazy german shepherd mix (never again) who whines at everything but is a great guard dog somehow and the sweetest blue-eyed sheltie/aussie/border collie mix ever. The sheltie sheds less than you'd expect. The shepherd more.

I have an affinity for mutts. There's even one I found rather attractive. But with two young kids, I'm not trusting a dog that has an unknown history. As far as I'm concerned, you never know what's been done to that dog by who and you'll never know what might trigger something until you've triggered it. My dad tried to "rescue" some fucking spaniel when we were kids. Apparently it had some dementia that made it go fucking bonkers if you did one of two or three things just such a way. Even after I had to punt it across the basement after it came at me, they kept it until it bit my sister's hand. So, I'm not quite fond of the idea.

I would have considered an Aussie Shepard if their hair wasn't so long. I really like the Presa Canario too, but they're kind of expensive and can be a pain in the ass. I'm also against the slobber jowls bring.

I miss my fat friend so now I need a fat dog.

The corso is from planet Italy. It is impervious to pain except for the ears, which used to make it a fine war dog, but now makes invisible fences useless against them - they just walk through them. So we're going to crop the ears, making it a lovely brindle battle tank. Compared to other breeds, it needs less exercise, but fortunately we have a fenced yard now, a few fenced dog parks within minutes and a treadmill that no one else uses. I also plan on teaching it how to use the weight machine to improve it's pecs by fashioning a harness to the lower pulley. I'm hoping it inspires me to think about working out again.

It develops a very strong affection for it's family and is protective of children, but as long as we keep it testing it's socialization on the neighbors, it should be fine.

I just reserved the second pick female of Massara's Riddick of Cornerstone x S Amos C Stone's Mischa. There's a black, a black brindle, and a regular brindle.

Actually, you're quite right. Whippets tend to be attention hogs. They'll 'demand' to be petted, and will sulk if they don't get it. Also, like all sight hounds, are more pack dogs, tend to have more separation anxiety if you've only got one. When our last grey passed away, it was really hard on her.

Deerhounds, and all sighthounds are extremely hard on cats. Deerhounds are not terribly healthy, and tend to be a short lived breed. 10 years at the outside, I believe.

Labs are what you make of them. Fit or fat, smart, or stupid. I've never met one that didn't take on the characteristics of its owner. Had one neighbor who was in a car accident and hurt her foot badly. Her yellow lab started to limp - no shit!

I've never been more disappointed in anything in my life than to find out that the origin of the term "jump the shark" involved Fonzie from the Pinky Tuscadero era. I bet if someone bashed your puppy in the head, her brain would swell. I'm with Swede in that I'm more outraged than with some attacks on people. I think it's because dogs can't defend themselves and are so trusting of us not to hurt them.

Well, I have a couple points here. The first is that my dog, even though she's a fucking idiot, knows better than to stand around and let someone whack her in the head. I know because I've tried. She passes the self-preservation test. Secondarily, I don't let my dog stand around outside, probably barking incessantly, in an area that is ill-fitted for that breed. I'm not trying to judge your old whore of a neighbor, but I've wanted to inflict violence when my neighbors decided that instead of training their dog, they would simply put it outside. That way, the entire neighborhood gets to hear the barking instead of the lazy, incompetent owners who think a dog is a toy or a fashion accessory or a living version of stuffed bear, instead of a living animal with needs, social, mental and physical. My violent thoughts were directed at the owners, since I knew the dog didn't know better, since it was never taught or trained to know better (black owners, you see). But I could see how frustrated idiots could direct their anger at the dog instead of the old lady. It's easier and carries less prison time.

At some point in this nation's recent history of metrosexuality and weakness and Queer eye for the Straight Guy, and through ridiculous romanticization of the relationship betwix man and dog, people started looking at dogs as equal companions, lovers, and unflinching holders of untold inherent knowledge instead of the servile beasts they've been since the relationship started hundreds or thousands of years ago depending on the breed. The people in these relationships, and moreso the dogs, have suffered for it. A dog that doesn't know it's place in the pack is as lost and confused as nutz in gay bar. Unfortunately, not many people understand this, and in their efforts to have mouth sex with their puppies, to carry them about in bejeweled bags, to keep full sized dogs in city sized spaces, and to let the dog be the pack leader when they walk, but then expect them to follow the human in the house/apartment just end up creating a mental mess out of their animal.

We had to let our other pet go today that we've been raising for most of the summer. She went through her final molt, and we couldn't find her a mate. Plenty of lady mantises to be found, but no boys. So we released her into nature, where she'll most likely be eaten by a bird. But we did enslave another young lady so the kids wouldn't be sad.
