GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers have the pick every team wants to have for the NFL Draft: the 32nd pick, the last pick of the first round. That means they won the Super Bowl the previous season, which the Packers did when they beat Pittsburgh, 31-25, in Super Bowl XLV.
So that’s the good part. The bad part is actually owning the 32nd pick and having to pay the player first-round money. If you go back the last 20 years, the 32nd pick isn’t actually the Who’s Who of NFL players.
Last year, the Saints picked cornerback Patrick Robinson, who totaled 28 tackles and two passes defensed. The 32nd pick in the 2009 draft, defensive tackle Ziggy Hood from Pittsburgh, has totaled only three sacks in two years.
The Packers have had the 32nd pick once in the previous 20 drafts and selected cornerback Craig Newsome in 1995. Newsome was a solid corner, who was with the Packers for four seasons. After playing well his first two good seasons, Newsome missed all but one game in 1997 with a knee injury and after 1998 moved on to San Francisco.
Newsome was never the same after undergoing reconstructive knee surgery in 1997, losing what little speed he had. He registered four interceptions during his career, three with the Packers.
Arguably, the two best players picked at No. 32 in the previous 20 drafts are Drew Brees and Logan Mankins. Brees was actually a second-round pick by San Diego and has become one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks, having guided the Saints to a Super Bowl win two years ago.
Mankins, a guard, is a three-time Pro Bowler for the Patriots.
So there is a shot at striking gold at No. 32, it just isn’t likely
Some other notable players picked at No. 32 have been Anthony Gonzalez (wide receiver, Colts, 2007), Mathias Kiwanuka (defensive end, Giants, 2006) and Ben Watson (tight end, Patriots, 235 career catches, 2004).
Because the No. 32 pick isn’t a great spot to find great talent, Packers general manager Ted Thompson will likely look to deal this pick. If a quarterback like Jake Locker or Ryan Mallett is available at No. 32, the Packers could find a team looking to pick what it thinks is a franchise-type quarterback.
This is especially true if Carolina, which is projected by many to pick Cam Newton at No. 1, pulls a surprise and doesn’t pick Newton or a quarterback. Carolina then might look at No. 33 (first pick of the second round) for a quarterback, which would open Green Bay’s No. 32 slot for a team to trade into to get a quarterback before Carolina picks one.
Whichever teams make the 32nd pick, one thing seems certain, he won’t be the offensive/defensive rookie of the year, as the No. 32 pick has never claimed a rookie of the year honor.

Who gives a fuck! We just won the Super Bowl with the youngest team in the NFL and the most injured?? LOL...Teddy T does his job and we are primed for the next 4-7 years under ARod and this low-paid team of young guys and injured guys coming back. LOL. Glad to be a Packer fan...BTW Snake was all about town (parties and bars) with his woman that nite and barely remembers the SuperBowl game in itself but has it DVD'd. I might watch it someday. LULZ

Hell we dont NEED a draft this year...seriously what do you look for in the draft? 1 starter, 3 contributers and 2 future guys and you know you will miss on at least on right? That would be a FREAKING great draft...Well lets look at what we have: Barnett, Brad Jones, Finley and Grant coming back...WTF!!!! Thats 4 starters/contributers...done we have the top 4 things we need in a draft now in 7 freaking picks we need 2 future guys...BOOM HEADSHOT NFL!!!

THANKSTED!

I kinda doubt Barnett will be back. With him on the roster we'll have 3 ILB's making starting salaries. I'd be happier letting Barnett go, and for one of those future guys drafted this year to be an ILB making 1/10 of what Barnett is due to make this year. We'd probably get the same contribution out of either with Bishop starting next to Hawk for 16 games.

Craig Newsome
Drew Brees
Logan Mankins
Anthony Gonzalez
Mathias Kiwanuka
Ben Watson

I don't agree with the premise. That's some pretty good players in the past few years. Even the #1 overall has a lot of misses.

I find it ridiculous that this article is taking past statistics as proof of future behavior. Each draft class is different. There's no guarantee that there won't be anyone of value at #32. The spot doesn't have a curse. After all, this isn't the Madden cover...

What those players have in common is that they all went to the big dance and except for AG, they've all won a SB ring.

A valid point; if Carolina passes on Newton teams will be looking to trade up ahead of them to nab a QB. Then again Hoody likes moving around more than anybody as well and he's a few picks earlier. Locker, Mallet, Ponder.....those three QB's may be hot commodities for teams looking to trade up

It's sort of a ridiculous argument when you think about it. Stars get drafted in the second round or even later right? So why couldn't the team selecting 32nd pick one of those second round guys who would be a star?

The only point I could see being made is that the percentages go down as you draft lower. Well, no shit.

In other news, the sun rose in the east today, and set in the west.

Apparently, a tree fell in the forest. Since there was no one around to witness the event, scientists are unable to prove it actually made a sound.
