I think the monster money days at the top of the draft are over, even if nothing else comes of this work stoppage. IMO Newton ends up with less money than Bradford got.

I agree, IF a CBA is had before the picks need to be signed for camp.

DAM...to be honest I wanted Carimi to go to Indy or GB or NE....so he wins a title. Hoody has his two OT's for the next five to ten yrs now.

Costanzo
Ayers
Ingram
Bowers

to a lesser extent...Sherrod/Smith

ADDING Cameron Jordan to this list............odds are we see one at 32..............and odds are............TT chooses somebody else

I agree, IF a CBA is had before the picks need to be signed for camp.

I haven't a clue how that will possibly work out.

If they go to camp without a CBA, which is looking at least possible now, I guess he could get his big contract. Wow though, I can't see Carolina throwing that money away, knowing it pretty much unnecessary. I bet this is going to be an epic year for camp starting with a lot of players from the top of the draft not signed.

Is there anyone left looking for a RB ahead of the Packers? Eagles, Chiefs, Ravens, Bears, Jets, Steelers aren't.

Pats (Woodhead), Saints (injuries) and Seahawks (retreads) maybe?

I sure hope these guys don't know what they're talking about. My guess is they don't.

I just don't think he's special and TT's already found guys like Grant and Starks for 6th rounders. Running backs who can play are too common to go RB that high unless the guy's special.

Lurker64

If I'm trading up with Seattle, I think it's to get Cam Jordan, not Ingram.

I think the RB TT grabs is going to be a return guy, like Taiwan Jones (obviously not in the first round).

Grant and Starks played what, 10 games combined last year. I wouldn't worry about hurting either of their feelings by drafting Ingram.

Keep 'em all. Grant only has one year left. Starks isn't making anything. At this point, Ingram won't make that much either.

I find the best athletes in the draft, then I weed out the ones who aren't productive. Then I look to see if they're all conference (anyone who's not all conference isn't going to be all anything in the NFL unless there happens to be another superstar in the same conference). Then I look to see if I can find comments by coaches. Then I look for comments by people who played against them. Then I read the McGinn write up. Then I end up with one or two guys who pass every test (and if you look, the tests I'm putting them through are all meaningful). This year it was Carpenter. I didn't read it from a scout, didn't read it at a site. I put the facts together independently and came up with an independent opinion on him that didn't match the media write ups.

Waldo has pass rush athletic numbers for the last 5 years or so. Guys who don't jump well (explosion) are almost NEVER respectable pass rushers unless they are insanely fast. You have to either have raw explosion (to go through people) or raw speed (to go around people). Those guys tend to have a go-to move that everyone has to respect and they can build their pass rush game off of it. It's amazing how few pass rushers are any good without either one or the other.

Wilkerson is not fast and is the least explosive 5 tech prospect out there. He has decently quick feet, but he's no edge rusher and his explosion is horrible. I think he's going to be blah. Normally I don't go just off of numbers, but since pass rush is so dependent on them, I'm going to go with the odds here and say he stinks. Could be wrong, but that's where I'm sliding my money.

Sherrod didn't come from a pro-style system. Most high picked lineman come from schools where there isn't so much projection. I don't want to say he's a project, but like Gruden said, he doesn't share their vision, but he does have size and athletic ability. . . .

This season, He has helped Mississippi State bulldoze its way to 219.3 rushing yards per game, which ranks 15th nationally. He has helped the top 25 Bulldogs achieve their most wins since 2007. The team captain has started 34 games and appeared in 46 contests for his career. He played in 10 games as a freshman in 2007, started 10 games as a sophomore, and started 12 games as a junior. He stands at 6'5'' and 305 pounds, but he has great agility for a man of his size. He is fundamentally sound, but struggled slightly against elite pass-rushers--whom he will see plenty of in the NFL. He has been a staple at left tackle for Mississippi State.

I think he is going to have a place on this team, and will most likely backup at both tackle spots for 2011, doesn't look like a guard to me. Athletic and can move. Sure he has to learn to protect in a pro style offense but it was a safe pic. Unfortunatley the Packers had no use for Bowers from Clemson. I seriously can't believe that 32 team passed on a guy because of torn cartilledge in the knee. Even if the guy missed 2011 he would still provide pass rushing and run defense from the 7 tech position for years. Best guy remaining.

My guess here is that TT took offers to trade down, but didn't want to go down too far and didn't get an offer he liked well enough, so he took the solid, safe, good pick. I like it. I'm good with it.

Benching 225 only 23 times isn't good, but at the same time you have to factor in the length of this guys arms. I haven't researched but benching is a bitch if you have long arms. He looks big, but lanky. He has the agility to get his foot work right.

Not a pick that is going to burn anybody. Probably won't be all pro, but it gives this coaching staff another young offensive linemen. I assume Bulaga has the inside track at left tackle if Clifton goes down.

I don't like either Bulaga or Sherrod as a guard

Also, Carolina has just bankrupted their franchise.

Also Mark Ingram Senior is a criminal serving a prison term, I don't need to have his emails read on National TV.

Lurker64

I don't see where anybody is thinking Sherrod is an RT. From what I've seen and read, he's pretty much only a left tackle. He's a long, athletic, nimble big guy who's primarily a pass blocker. If that doesn't scream "Clifton's replacement" I don't know what would.

Sherrod backs up Clifton for a year and starts at LT in year two.

The only thing I'm worried about is his pad level.

Deputy Nutz

Benching 225 only 23 times isn't good, but at the same time you have to factor in the length of this guys arms.

Of all the OL at the Combine only Tyron Smith (36 3/8), Jarriel King (36 3/8), Ben Ijalana (36), and Joseph Barksdale (36) had longer arms than Sherrod (35 3/8). Tyron Smith was the #9 overall pick and put up 29 reps, Jarriel King did not lift at the combine or his pro day, nor did Ben Ijalana, while Barksdale put up 29 but is not nearly the athlete that Sherrod is and does not project to left tackle in the NFL. 23 reps is fine for a long-armed OL who doesn't need to start right away. Remember that OL aren't usually the guys who put up huge numbers on the bench. Bulaga's arms are 2.5" shorter than Sherrod's and Bulaga only put up 26 on the bench.

gotta have good pad level

We'll get that fixed.

it was a fair value pick; I was speaking with a friend at work today and we asked each other if we got 20-1 odds and had to name two players who we'd predict would be Packers who would they be ? I predicated Ingram, and I think that is what GB wanted if he slipped with the first option and Sherrod as option #2. . Sherrod just seemed like the only grade one OT that could slip to us. He's not a guy to get too excited about short term; he was probably the 6th best OT in the draft. But he seems like he can be athletic enough to protect the passer and be a steady player for years to come.

For the instant gratification guys (I often find myself guilty), we'd have rather seen a trade down and then hoped to pick up a guy like Reed or Moch to start right away.

But this guy fit a need we have so he made sense.

Pete Carroll noted he had 5 trade offers he was considering with the pick be4 he drafted James Carpenter at pick 25

Badger homerism aside, I'm happy Sherrod fell and Carimi didn't. With Carimi, Bulaga needs to turn into a LT. Now you've got some flexibility to see which of the two pans out there.

agreed.

All in all, everything read up until this point... I like the pick. I thought he would be gone before us. Like many, I'm surprised Bowers is still on the boad. I think Sherrod is a very berry good pick up for the pack though and I can see him covering quite well for Cliffy when he takes his eventual 3 game Flu, bad knee, bad other knee break this year.

Love the pick. My top guys were been Ingram, Sherrod or Aaron Williams. This is a deep OT draft, and this is a legit 1st round talent at LT. To me, LT is the second most important player behind QB. We now likely have two guys to protect Aaron Rodgers for the next 10 years. I didn't find too many people who didn't like this guy--unlike Ayers, Heyward, Reed, and others that I looked at.

Great pick! Beluga on the right, to kick keester and give us some nasty roadgrading for the run game, and Sherrod on the left to take care of the blind side. This really does set up well for the future. I'm very happy with this pick, as we are slooowly getting the pieces for a solid OL.

This should make retailguy happy. He hates our OL. We know have a wily veteran at OC, a kickass RG, and two young, first round OTs. I'm still hopeful that Lang can make a push at LG.

Watch for Thompson to target Slippery Rock Center Brandon Fusco in the 4th or 5th rounds. That has "TT Pick" written all over it.

Yes, exactly. I'm eager to hear what our OL experts think (ND, KY et al) but to me, Sitton and Bulaga on the right (NASTY!), Sherrod and Lang on the left (SOLID), that's some seriously sweet stuff.

For a decade.

I agree with RG about Colledge. After 4 years or so of inconsistent play, that's an upgradeable spot IMO. Hopefully Lang and/or McDonald can make a strong push there.

You can't argue with reinforcing Rodgers' blindside protection. There's a ton of value in that. Hopefully Sherrod can put on more bulk. The fact that he didn't allow a sack his last two years in the SEC looks pretty good.

I was surprised Watkins got picked when he did. I'd have liked to have seen him on the board at 32.

Even if Watkins was there, I think I'd still want to take a shot at Sherrod. In my mind, an OG has to be superman before you take him in round 1, and Watkins ain't got no cape.

And this stuff about Sherrod needing more bulk -- c'mon. I don't think Cliffy is some weight-room monster, but he plays smart and fluid with good feet and lots of smarts, the same way Sherrod plays. And after all, Sherrod is no punk, he was a team captain, played in an athletic conference, and he'll get stronger, so I really have a good feeling that this will play out well.
