Scouting Report

A long, thinner lineman who lacks a great initial first step off the snap. Consistently allows defensive linemen to get into and under his frame off the snap and he can routinely be overwhelmed vs. the bull rush. Lacks the bend to consistently gain leverage on contact and struggles with his overall base strength vs. more physical defenders. Showcases above-average lateral agility when asked to mirror in pass protection and when he is patient he does a nice job extending his arms and working his hands through the play. However, too often he lunges into defenders tying to get on them prematurely and can be easily slipped on contact and gives up penetration inside. Looks more comfortable sliding his feet and mirroring in space, but even so he isn't real heavy handed and struggles to lock out and win a block outside. Isn't a guy who will ever drive anyone off the snap in the run game, but has the length and body control to seal at times when he has a chance to get out of his stance. But overall, lacks the first step and overall range to be much of a factor in the run game at the line or at the second level in the NFL.

Impression: Is a nice-sized kid, but struggles to anchor inside, lacks great initial burst off the football and struggles to win blocks outright at the college level. Nothing more than a camp body at this stage.

Grade 5.5 ( Free Agent with Athletic Ability, Character and Competitiveness.)

Offensive Guard Specific Traits

Pass Protection: 4
Quick enough to protect the B-gap and gets adequate hand placement. Adequate footwork and balance. Rarely lost once locked on at the collegiate level but NFL defensive tackles will expose weaknesses. Below average lateral quickness. Turns shoulders and runs with 3-tecnhniues when they shoot inside instead of staying square and shuffling feet. Fails to get defenders' hands downs. Did not show the ability to cut defenders' legs out from under them or get their hands down by delivering a violent punch.

Run Blocking: 3
Gets adequate hand placement and drives legs once locked on. Gets adequate movement when plays with sound leverage but inconsistent in this area. Plays with a narrow base and slides off too many blocks. Shows adequate body control in space but quicker linebackers can still slip him. Takes inconsistent angles to second level blocks and not quick or agile enough to get away with it. Can get around center when asked to trap linebacker and around the corner when asked to pull.

Awareness: 3
Keeps head up and makes sound adjustments to the blitz. Picks up line stunts when in pass protection but has some problems when run blocking and the defensive front shifts at the snap of the ball.

Toughness: 2
Nasty disposition and blocks through the whistle once locked on. Above average aggressiveness when no one comes to him in pass protection and can turn to help guard or tackle. Flashes above average aggressiveness in space but could be more consistent in that area.

Overview:
For scouts looking for a consistent guard prospect will have Schlauderaff's name on their list. After redshirting as a freshman in 2007, he played in Utah's 52 games played in the past four years, starting the final 49. He is thin for the position, but his lack of bulk hasn't led to injuries. Outside of a minor knee issue that caused him to miss the final three quarters of the San Diego State game as a junior in 2009, he's been a model of health.

Such a lengthy career led to a few positional experiments. He spent some time at left tackle in 2009, but his experience at left guard led to third-team AP All-America, second-team Walter Camp All-America and first-team All-Mountain West honors as a senior.

A decorated run blocker, he has plenty of work to do in pass protection. His speed in the open field is more than adequate, but his poor short-area quickness and lateral mobility make him a liability against crafty pass-rushers and a likely candidate to move over to the right side as a backup early in his NFL career.

Analysis
Strengths: Has adequate top-end speed for the position. Loaded with experience, has starting since his redshirt freshman season. Plays with a nasty mean streak and takes pride in running defensive lineman into the ground. Gets solid hand placement on defenders and works to finish his blocks. Can sit into his stance and anchor against rushers when set. Drives players out of the hole once he locks on and is fast enough to get around the center when pulling. Plays with above-average awareness and anticipates blitzes and stunts.

Weaknesses: Is limited athletically and is below average when it comes to lateral mobility. Will turn his shoulders and run down the line with defenders instead of mirroring and sliding his feet. Allows defenders to use their hands and does a poor job of protecting his body with short arms. Is slow out of his stance and fails to get into initial position in a timely manner despite knowing where to go. Lacks a violent punch and does not have the core strength, base or build to absorb bull rushes. Does not operate well in space and struggles to engage moving targets at the second level.

Biography: Four-year starter at left guard. All-Conference selection the past two-years.

Positives: "Explosive small-area blocker who's been productive on the college level. Quickly sets up off the snap, stays square, and turns defenders from the action. Bends his knees, blocks with leverage, and keeps his feet moving throughout the action. Shows the ability to adjust and effectively knock defenders from their angle of attack with good punch. Keeps his head on a swivel, plays with a nasty attitude, and will hit multiple defenders off a single snap. Uses good body positioning to seal defenders from the action."

Negatives: Gets minimal movement run blocking. Lumbers about the field and ineffective in motion.

Analysis: Schlauderaff was a solid college lineman with adequate upside for the next level. He has enough skill and versatility to be a backup in a system that does not ask him to block in motion.

Projection: 5-6

Grade: 2.42 (Fence Player -- Prospect on the fence that has the skills and abilities to succeed but needs time and patience to develop those skills to the fullest. )
