Re Longwell...
There is about an ocean of bad blood standing in the way of that move.
The only thing that gives me pause is TT usually takes care of all future moves prior to FA. Once the process gets that far, Thompson has usually moved on. Wonder what the deal is this time?

Who are the FA kickers?
Free Agent Kickers this offseason (their status, and their their ages): Adam Vinatierri (UFA, 38), Matt Prater (RFA, 27), Ryan Longwell (UFA, 37), Olindo Mare (UFA, 38), Matt Bryant (UFA, 36), Shayne Graham (UFA, 33), Connor Barth (RFA, 25), Mason Crosby (UFA, 26), Nick Folk (UFA, 26).
David Akers (36) was transition tagged, but the Iggles drafted a kicker high, so likely they will rescind the tag once the lockout is lifted and then cut him, at which point he will be a UFA.

I'll start by saying I like Crosby a lot, and hope he's the guy we get back. Hard to tell why it got to this point with Crosby, I can only guess it's because he's low on the priority list. It's relatively cheap to tag him, should that option still be available.
If we go in another direction, the most interesting name on that list is Nick Folk. He was a very good kicker until his injury, he messed up his re-hab, and the Dallas trainers didn't sort it out. He's healthy again, and seems like he can be dominant.
I can't see the vets on that list, Vinatierri, Longwell or Mare being terribly interested in GB, or us in them. Mare has been Miami, NO, Seattle. Could he kick in bad weather?
Ackers is still effective, isn't he? He's been in Philly, so should be an ok cold weather guy. I wouldn't mind him.

Can Vinatierri still kick outdoors?
No, and I think that's the problem. Viniaterri could probably kick outdoors, but would he want to? Longwell, I'm sure has gotten very used to kicking in a dome. Even disregarding the bad blood on his way out of town, why would he want to come back to a place where he's kicking something that's like kicking a brick. I'm not even completely convinced he'd be effective here anymore. Even though GB I'm sure is great for a lot of players, It's not an easy place to be an effective kicker. Crosby hasn't kicked elsewhere, is strong enough to fight the weather, kicks off a ton better than Longwell and likes it here. That's unique. I think TT does what he needs to do to keep him, and Crosby does what it takes to stay.
Bretsky
07-07-2011, 07:30 PM
Longwell would probably be money at 42 and under here; it seemed like a dome gave him five more yards.
He's more valuable to a dome team and I'm sure he'd much rather kick in a dome as well.

Akers has had a good career in Philly, which can be a tough place to kick. He had some misses last year, but he'd be my second choice I think. Crosby is clearly the guy to get for the Pack.

Moot issue IMO. I'm sure Crosby would prefer to be back in Green Bay, and I see no reason why Thompson wouldn't want him back in Green Bay. I'd imagine that deal is done very quickly after the lockout ends. He'll be here.

Another alternative to Crosby, in case we can't retain him. Kai Forbath, out of UCLA, had a pretty good kicking career and he went undrafted. Personally, I didn't have him far behind Alex Henery who the Iggles drafted in the fourth round.

The Packers did pretty well with their last rookie kicker. NFL record for point by rookie and won first game with a FG at the end in a tough venue at Philly...
That being said, I'd rather keep that former NFL rookie than find a new one...

The easiest solution, of course, is to just keep scoring TDs and avoid FG attempts altogether, and going for 2 on every PAT. That reduces the duties down to a strong leg for kicking off.
There's just no way I can invent a scenario that brings Longwell back to Applebees.

Potentially worth considering is that Masthay kicked off at Kentucky, so if you got a kicker with more accuracy than range, you could probably rely on Masthay (though I don't think he has the leg that Crosby does.)

Zig, I just think we're having this disussion out of pure lockout boredom. I don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell that TT doesn't get it done. Unless Crosby is gonna ask for crazy-money. His agent has a bit of leverage, I suppose.

There has been talk about teams have a limited number of "matching offer" options for this season only, as a transition into whatever the new FA rules will be. Sort of like some extra tags, but without the required salary tenders. If that happens, Crosby would be a good one to use one of them on.

But that would accomplish exactly that, with his value determined by the league. If the team and player are having a hard time agreeing on his value, this would do that for them.

I meant long-term contract. If players get angry at getting tagged, I'd rather see the team work out a long-term deal rather than anger the player and have the same discussion again next year.

I think Patler means some team would give him a long term contract offer, then the Packers would match it and have him in an identical long term contract, kinda like with restricted free agents.

It very likely would be a long term contract. They could match whatever another team offers, which almost certainly would be long term. It's not likely that some other team will offer him only a one year contract. The one-year aspect usually only applies to the original team's tender offer, and what they are talking about now does not include the tender offer part of it. Just a right of first refusal for whatever FA contract the player receives from someone else.

First, I didn't make fun of the animal. I simply asked what happened to it. I figured I'd seen hundreds of dogs and none looked like that one, so some external force must have been applied to create such a unique head.
Second, it wasn't shaped like an egg. More like a Hersey's kiss.
Third, I don't think that was why she didn't talk to us.
Forth, I was obviously correct in assuming something was wrong with the dog is it died shortly thereafter.
