Since it's free agent time, it's bound to be slow news in the land of TT, so I thought I'd bring up something I noticed thumbing through some SI camp pictures.

For the first time in my memory, I saw advertising patches on some NFL jerseys! Ads on jerseys are commonplace in international club soccer, but I don't recall seeing ads on any of the big three (MLB, NBA, NFL) before.

Even GB has gotten in on the cash, sporting "Belin Healthcare" patches. From what I could tell, not all teams have done this, but Dallas and the NY Giants have taken the cash.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I'm guessing ads will eventually make appear on to game uniforms, and this is just the camel's nose under the tent. I've always liked the purity of American sport unis, but if it's between purity and cash, I'm guessing the owners will always take the cash.

Oh God, please don't end up like NASCAR. Can you imagine after every win they have to take a drink from 5 different sodas and energy drinks and wear 3 different hats before they can do an interview?

I think the rules allow advertisements on practice jerseys, but not game jerseys. I don't think anybody would offer the NFL enough money for an ad on game jerseys in order to get the NFL to change the rule. There are other revenue streams available.

Lurker, read your post again. Man, money is the name of the game. Stadiums have already succumbed to this, what's to stop jerseys.

My guess is that the owners, in constant search of new revenue streams, will agree to ad patches like what I've seen on practice jerseys within the next five years.

I think the cowboys had it first then it spread. The NFL makes money on everything. Look at the draft. Makes millions on a pretty overblown event.

I think fans (who buy jerseys) may balk at that. I love my Packer jerseys, but would I wear one in public with a bank logo on it?

The price to put a patch on an actual jersey for an NFL regular season game would be prohibitive. The NFL risks losing jersey sales, it will be seen by tens if not hundreds of millions of people, and it potentially damages the reputation of the product for the most lucrative sports league there is. It's just not something that any advertiser is going to pony up for. They'll have the official beer of the NFL, the official pretzel of the NFL, the official styptic pencil of the NFL, the official diabetic socks of the NFL, etc. but it just would cost too much for an advertiser to get a patch on a real jersey.

C'mon people...would you rather have to pay more sales taxes to keep the Packers in Green Bay, or let a couple corporate interests pony up some coin for a tag on a PRACTICE jersey? As long as the Packer chose respectable and community focused organizations, I'm all for it.

Seriously, some of you need to enter the 21st century. This is a multi-billion dollar business we are talking about, and they didn't get that way by passing up opportunities to earn more coin.

If all the jerseys have ads, I tend to think sales won't be affected too much. I think Man United and Barcelona jerseys sell pretty well.

Though I agree with others that I'd hate to see them in the NFL. But coin is coin. It's just a matter of time.

Relax guys. It's in the rules that those patches can't show up on gamedays. It's kind of tacky, so thank God we don't have to see it. Even if the rules changed and allowed it, the Packers wouldn't do that shit. At least I'd hope we'd be above that kind of thing.

Anyway, it would take 21 of 32 owners(hips) to get that rule changed. Pretty unlikely.

Agree with Noodle. The owners will realize how much money they can make from this and will get it added. Jerry Jones would likely lead the way.

Heck, I'm mildly surprised that the ads haven't been put on the field or on the walls around the field.

If they do this, I would like to see patches on the uniforms for "Al's Plumbing and Heating" and "Ted Rattee Excavation" or "Kevin's Lawn Care" and stuff like that.
