This isn't well sourced at this point, as nothing has been confirmed by the team, but here's what 1070 The Fan in Indianapolis reported a couple hours ago.

https://twitter.com/#!/JMV1070

Been told by multi sources that QB P Manning needs a 2nd neck procedure. Will remain out indefinitely.Called #colts and waiting on response.

I drafted Manning and Cassell in FF, and Cassell may miss week 1 with bruised ribs thanks to Howard Green (and his idiot coach). I've picked up Mark Sanchez.

Cassel's coach is at least a part-time idiot. Get your #1 QB out of the last Pre-season game, coach!

There's no "I" in team...but there's an "I" in Indianapolis. The Colts are going to realize how much they suck without Peyton Manning. At least they'll be in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes.

The Packers had at least a part in getting at least 3 coaches fired last year. Favre helped with the glorious 4th so that counts too.

Perhaps we'll chalk up Todd Haley as the first one for 2011.

Who knows which reporter's sources are correct, or which sources either one is even talking to, but I will say this. I wouldn't put it past Mortensen and ESPN for a second to be up Manning's jockstrap trying to spin and quell speculation because Manning hasn't accepted this medical opinion yet.

Either way. Not good news. I was one of those that grabbed Manning... thinking that I was getting a bargain if he didn't miss more than a game or two. Luckily, I have Kevin Kolb and he has good matchups the first three weeks. Come on, Peyton. Get back by game 4 please.

Manning might be done. I dont know, but it doesnt sound good. He is a fierce competitor, so if there is any chance, he will be back. But when you are a sure HOF pick and have won a SB to boot, there is no reason to risk paralysis by any means.

If Manning is not playing, the Colts don't have enough of a D or a running game to overcome their substandard backup QB situation. They may be in the running with the Bungles for the top draft pick spot.

According to PFT, Irsay is having a Noon ET news conf. about this.

If Manning is out for longer than 5-6 games, they're screwed. Their first half schedule is:
@Houston, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, @Tampa, KC, @Cincy, @NO and @Tenn.

w/ Manning that's L, W, L, L, W, W, L, W
w/o Manning that's L, L, L, L, L, W, L, W

It's a difference of two games, but that's the difference between playoffs and no in our league.

Press release from Colts on Manning (courtesy of Adam Schefter of ESPN via Twitter)

In response to a number of media inquiries, the Colts issue the following update on Peyton Manning’s status:

During the last week, the rate of improvement in Peyton’s rehabilitation process slowed. Over the weekend Peyton experienced soreness in his back. It was originally thought to be a normal reaction to his rehabilitation regimen. When the soreness persisted, the Colts medical team decided to initiate diagnostic tests and to consult with a number of specialists around the country who have been involved in Peyton’s case from the outset. That process continues. As a result of the most recent development the doctors have decided that Peyton will not practice. His participation therefore, in Sunday’s game versus Houston will likely be doubtful. We will update his playing status as required by NFL policy as the week goes on.

At the conclusion of the diagnostic process, if there are any new developments in the prognosis which we outlined for Peyton at the start of training camp we will report them. As of now Peyton continues to deal with a complicated neurological recovery, the end date of which is unpredictable.

As was stated at the outset, it serves no useful purpose to speculate about hypothetical outcomes. When and if there are concrete medical facts to report we will do so.
We appreciate your consideration in this matter.
_____________

In other words, he ain't playin' this week, and if he's playing after this week...don't call us, we'll call you.

Just about everyone has Peyton being slowed in rehab and removed from practice. The iffy stuff is like OP's source, that doctor's that think he might need more work. According to the Colts, nothing is definite yet. Which of course, probably means it's 2 days away.

If this is getting to the chronic stage, it will impact his career stats, too.

Betcha this would also sideline Brent from joining a team midseason too.

As much as I have disliked Favre's behavior the last few years, I am glad he will keep the record for consecutive games played. It makes me proud to think he accomplished a streak, that may remain unbroken, as a Packer.

Report: Manning could miss season
Peyton Manning, QB, IND
4:08 PM

News: WDNE-AM in Indianapolis is reporting that Colts QB Peyton Manning has undergone another surgical procedure on his neck and is in danger of missing the season. This is the second radio report from Indianapolis in less than a week that has suggested that Manning will not play in 2011. Manning has been ruled out for Week 1 at Houston already as he has not rehabbed quickly enough from neck surgery in May. "It will be tough not to be out there playing for the organization and our fans," Manning said regarding missing Week 1, per ESPN. "I simply am not healthy enough to play."

Analysis: As we've been saying for days, Fantasy owners should have a backup plan in place for Manning. For Week 1, we like Colt McCoy (vs. Cincinnati), Kevin Kolb (vs. Carolina), Kyle Orton (vs. Oakland) and of course Collins (at Houston). Potential long-term replacements for Manning include Donovan McNabb, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Chad Henne, Matt Hasselbeck and naturally Collins. None of these quarterbacks come close to Manning in talent but they'll actually play whereas Manning might not. We'll keep you posted.

If this report turns out to be true and Peyton and the Colts flat out lied about the need for and him having the 2nd procedure, that ain't right. If I'm a Colts fan or beat reporter, I'd be interested in getting some answers about why the organization lied to me.

Guiness
09-07-2011, 05:56 PM
I wonder what the chances are that this is a career for him? If he's off for an extended period, especially if he sits out the season, it's got to be hard for him to come back, both physically and mentally, at his age.

Sidney Crosby (NHL, Pittsburgh Penguins) is still out from a concussion in January. Listening to reports this summer, I guessed he'd at least miss the beginning of the season, possibly all of it. The Penguins just held a news conference announcing there is no schedule for his return - and the question of retirement raised it's head.

I'm no neurosurgeon but my guess is that they still don't know exactly what is going on and that he is receiving a range of opinions. Among that range the needle may now be pointing toward "season-ending second procedure" but that doesn't necessarily mean they had the same information a week ago. Peyton may have been holding out hope of finding another reputable opinion in favor of more rehab.

Yup, he sure did. If worst case were to happen, he doesn't play, collects and it counts against the cap Indy is in cap hell for a few years.

Is that actually how it would work?

If they cut him during this season, all the accelerated seasons of bonus would all apply to the 2012 cap.

However, they could appeal to the league for relief if this happened, since that would be ~$45m in one season! Gaww!

Irsay says on Tweeter that he's out for "awhile". At any rate, if I was Irsay/Polian/whomever, I would absolutely tank the season and tell the guys to lose as much as possible. You're not gonna get a shot at another Peyton Manning type prospect when Peyton is starting. Andrew Luck is being touted as the next great quarterback and the best prospect since #18 himself. That would be ridiculously *luck*y.

I like Peyton Manning. For a long time I hated him because he exudes arrogant dickheadedness. But when he goes on interviews or SNL, its pretty obvious that he has a good sense of humor about himself.

I think Favre deserves to hold the iron man record a bit me than Manning, glad Manning is missing a game. Favre got hit a lot more in his career, took a licking and kept on ticking.
