Straight from Buddy Ryan's playbook.

At first I thought this thread was going to provide recipes for removing tarnish from those areas of the Packers.

Now you have me wondering if I don't know how to spell "Polish".

I have to read more to see what changes they made to avoid this.

According to one commenter:

There is a new rule, that puts 10 seconds back on the clock if the defense commits a penalty, or something to that effect. Its in both college and NFL.

I haven't heard anything about putting 10 seconds back on the clock. But if you're the offense and you see them trotting out the Polish defense, you could just snap the ball, spike it immediately and gain 5 yards/half the distance at the price of 1-2 seconds.

True, once you know it might happen, you might spot it. But Ryan completely got away with this punt formation once because no one caught it. While there was some doubt in the comments about the spike method to combat it, I agree it was legal for most of Ryan's tenure with the Eagles.

The embarassing part would be if the offense did indeed score with the 14 guys on the field. How do you live that down?

The Kielbasa Defense?

The Kielbasa Defense?

Would that consist of only 300+ lb players?

Not sure if this would apply, but there is something in the rulebook called "Palpably Unfair Act" which--I am giving my own summary--allows the official to award something more than just the usual penalty yardage (e.g., they can award a touchdown if someone comes off the bench to tackle a runner in the open field) if they determine that one team is taking advantage of the rules. If there is a situation where it is obvious that the defense was benefiting from taking penalties, presumably this principle would apply, though it's not clear what the imposed penalty should be. In both cases, maybe rewind the clock and force the Poles to play with 10?

Called as necessary in the case of any illegal action that the officials deem has clearly and indisputably deprived a team of a score. For example, if a player or other person not legally in the game at the start of a given play comes onto the field to tackle a player apparently en route to a touchdown, the team that would have scored is awarded the touchdown. This can also conceivably (explicitly in high-school rule books) be invoked in cases where the defense commits repeated intentional infractions very close to its own goal line (the half-the-distance rule making the consequence of such infractions otherwise infinitesimal).

In that much of a rush situation, would the QB really have time to count all the defenders with enough certainty to risk spiking the ball?

Didn't the Cowboys line up 13 on the CJ TD at the end of that game? Maybe it wasn't an accident...

To the topic: If this strategy became widespread, I'm certain the competition committee would address it and find another way to extract fun from the game.

Besides it's Mickey Mouse manipulation. School boy antics.

The Rules Committee will come down on it PRONTO. ie set the offensive team on the one yard line 'or closer than'... half the distance to the goal or 5 yards.

Useless for the Packers. They could have 14 on the punt team and still give up a long return given Slocum's coaching.

I didn't name the formation. All complaints should be addressed to Buddy and his doctors.

Exactly. Though I'd think there's an even chance his son's have other formations named similarly.

But seriously, we have no comment here at "Read This, Be Smarter" editorial HQ about this topic, however, it is our policy to refrain from directly referencing stereotypes unless they appear in direct quotes in our stories. Or they serve as sloppy and lazy comparison's of racially similar athletes playing certain positions (ie. unknown marginally talented white WRs will always be compared to Wes Welker or Bill Schroeder, regardless of whether they actually ARE similar WRs).

Gamebook indicates there was 1:44 left on clock for that play. Might have been too early for this tactic.

If I were a white WR I'd rather be compared to Fred Bilitnikoff. Or Raymond Berry. Or Don Hutson.

The people making that comparison are simply using the Google trend list to fill out their articles. Its been a while since Hutson was trending, or trendy.
