It doesn't matter. Newhouse is playing far worse against Allen than what I remember in the first game. He needed help then and he needs help again tonight.

McCarthy has taken to calling his playcalling in specialized situations (4 minute offense, 2 minute offense, goalline/short yardage = anytime the D NEEDS a stop) his phone booth offense. As in a lot of people in a confined space.

You and I know it as the 4 minute offense when he seems to pull in his horns to drain clock. In this case, it worked like a charm. Some nice runs and passes to backs and Cobb.

I think he'd be silly to hold a clipboard at this point. He's got nothing left to prove, so I hope he calls it a career if nobody looks at him as a starter. Him coming in during training camp didn't really help his cause, but that said, he's had a very good career. Nobody will hold last year against Favre.

Scoreboard, Allen.....

Jared Allen quotes after the game

"Oh, man, it's disappointing. It's pathetic," he said. "When you get your butt whipped like that, I don't really know what else to call it.

"Hats off to Green Bay. They have a talented team and I hope they take it all. At least we can say we lost to back-to-back (Super Bowl) champs."

"45-7? Are you kidding me?" defensive end said. "They throttled us out there today.

"Are they that good and we that bad? I don't know. We have some issues that we have to clear up and play better. Obviously, when you play them at home, you can't stop them. They were playing on all cylinders so I guess they are that good."

"We were hitting him and he still comes back and does a good job," said Allen. "He is in the zone. I think he is a heck of a player. I hope they win it all now."

Little different reaction than a former QB who played for MINN for a couple of years when talking about the Pack.

This is exactly what BF could have said to start to build some bridges back to GB.

He was a one man wrecking crew out there last night. There was one play where he got knocked down, got up, saw Rodgers running up the middle and he made the tackled. Doesn't give up at all.

They give him a case of beer per sack.
This is why Raji should get a cheeseburger per sack.

And the worst thing about that play is Newhouse should have hit him when Allen tried to get up from the ground. Instead Newhouse watched him get up and tackle ARod.

I know that Allen is very good and that at least a few of his sacks/pressures came from stunts where he came up the inside, but has Newhouse taken a step back in his progress? He has seemed to struggle the last couple of games, and I can't figure out why.

Is it time to try out the rook Sherrod?

Brandon494
11-15-2011, 11:16 AM
You think Sherod would have done any better against Allen? There is a reason he leads the league in sacks and is on pace to break the sack record for a season. Dude is a beast!

I don't know whether Sherrod would do better than Newhouse. I know that Newhouse has struggled, he's given up the most sacks on the line, and he has not shown steady improvement. His play against the Chargers was up and down, with some pretty big downs.

I think a change, were it to have happened, would have needed to take place after the bye. But I do think Newhouse is struggling. And as the protector of A-Rod's blindside, that makes me nervous.

pbmax
11-15-2011, 11:55 AM
I could just be imagining it, but sometimes it seems like you can see, in relation to other players on the field that Newhouse is a bit small for a typical Left Tackle these days. Sherrod looks bigger than Bulaga and the same build as Clifton. If Sherrod has arms like Clifton, it probably explains why his upside seems higher and he seems pre-destined to slide into Left Tackle. Whether he could handle it now or not, I am not sure. But after two shaky plays in Atlanta, he seemed to adjust well and have very few pass pro problems even on the right side. He just kept engulfing the rushers.

Allen reminds me a bit of Dick Butkis in '69. Playing for the 1-13 Bears, the guy gets defensive player of the year. It takes a lot of heart to play all-out for a losing cause.

I agree with the comment above about Newhouse. You have to play to - and past the whistle - against guys like Allen. Keep the motor running, because they will. If you want some of the best tape ever on Cliffy, just look to his shut out of Allen at KC in 2007. That was total mastery. And was Allen pissed in the lockerroom afterwards!

I don't know why you guys are saying that he hasn't played well. I think he has filled in capably. No, he's not a star by any means, but he only gave up 1 sack to Jallen Macbeerbearbeast, so I think he's holding things down alright.

I agree. I specifically watched Newhouse on replay - every play. He did well. Got confused by a stunt a little bit, didn't play to the whistle another time. Gave up a sack. Starks was more of a problem than Newhouse I thought.

He also looked goofy when he would tackle Rodgers for a 3 yard gain. Seemed like he was looking around to see if it was a sack, so he could do his goofy rodeo bit.
