footballoutsiders.com has a dvoa ranking system which charts every play then compares it to the expected outcome for the same situation. This results in a ranking system of teh teams compared to a baseline first and then each other (this is a simplification fyi). Anywho, they say the packers special teams have gone all the way up to 7th in the league. Yes 7th, not 17th or 27th but 7th.

So can Slocum get some credit or is it all Matshay, Crosby and Cobb coupled with superior talent for blocking and coverage?

I'm happy with the play of Masthay and Crosby. If Cobb can clean up the fumbling/muffing issues, then I'll be ecstatic about him as well. The coverage units could use some work, though. I'm also not sure they block especially well for Cobb, it's just that he's profoundly nifty with the ball.

So, when the Packers had terrible special teams, it was because Slocum was the worst ST coach in the league.
Now that the special teams are respectable but not great, it's because of the talent, and he's the only reason they're not elite.
What happens if they become elite?
