This afternoon I started getting a bunch of warnings popping up on my screen saying my computer is infected with blah, blah, blah....bunch of stuff. A variety of these warnings come up and then it ultimately wants me to activate XP Home Security 2012. I googled it and it sounds like it is a fake antivirus application that does nothing but take your money.

So how do I remove this thing or get it to stop popping up???

Help....Please!

Throw it away and buy a new PC? They are cheap as chips these days. Prolly cheaper than that programme they>'re trying to sell you!

When I saw you responded in this thread I somehow knew what your reply would be before I even opened it. :)
No can do this close to x-mas.

The virus (or maybe it is a worm, whatever) is annoying to get rid of, but probably not doing much harm.

Often there are dedicated programs to get rid of particular flavors of the kind of problem you are seeing. what virus name does it claim you are infected with? what is name of program it wants you to buy? This forum will tell you how to remove particular infections of the sort you are seeing:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum55.html

I have found two programs to be good at cleaning up infected machines:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/combofix

Malwarebytes is a paid program, but whatever you download for free seems to work fine. By running these two programs, you will get rid of spyware and latent infections that are hanging around, they usually will find something even if you have anti-malware software running.

Experts will tell you it is impossible to be sure that an infection is completely removed, you really have to reformat and reload all software to be sure. But you have a sissy infection, you'll be ok.

I had a terrible version of an old disease recently, the google redirect virus. Malwarebytes failed. Try it first though, as that and Spybot - Search & Destroy are the two everyone tries first, even though I thought one of those basically tells you what's wrong then asks you to upgrade to the full version to fix it.

This is what finally worked for me, the trail version: http://www.immunet.com/main/index.html

Regardless, you should download Microsoft Security Essentials to protect your computer. It's free, and it does a better job than Norton, which had no clue my computer was infected, much less how to fix it. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials

i've gotten this virus like 6 times in the last week, all from the same porn site. one day i'll learn

turn off your computer, when you start it back up, start pressing F8 repeatedly until a screen shows up giving you different options to restart your computer

select safe mode with networking

when windows starts, get on the internet and download malwarebytes. once you've downloaded and installed it, right click on it and select "run as administrator"

when it opens it should say that an update is available, let it download an update

after that, run a quick scan

it should find the virusus. then restart your computer. when windows restarts (the normal way) it will ask if you would like to let malwayrebytes make changes to your computer.

things should be fixed. if not. repeat everything until its gone

I forgot about this step. Sometimes you absolutely have to do this step, otherwise some of the buggers actually block you from downloading virus-removing software. But do look in that forum to see if your particular problem can be remooved simply and directly.

I found that combofix found problems that malwarebytes missed

Download and run Spybot Search and Destroy.

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

Once your system is clean download and install AVG Free antivirus. If you are already running Symantec or McAfee antivirus remove them first.

Are you running Windows 7? Get Microsoft Security Essentials...free from MS. AVG has always worked great...so has the spyware bot stuff.

The main thing is stop doing stupid shit on the computer. :)

Had to do a registry update to be able to use my exe files. Then rkill to stop the processes. The malwarebyte to get rid of it. I'm so going right back to that site as soon as it's finished.

MS Security Essentials works fairly well, so it is worth having. Are you guys using IE? That thing is a virus/worm magnet. Firefox is much better, although it gets bogged down by some scripts at times. Chrome works well, and both FF and Chrome have ad blocking plugins.

The final key is your own brains. Turn off the "Hide known extensions" option from your file browser so you don't get burned by a .jpg.exe or similar hack. Don't just blindly click OK when a program asks you for access. When checking e-mail, don't click on the links unless you are sure the e-mail is real. Even if it seems to come from a friend, it still could be a fake message. If you hover over the link and the address that shows up there does not match what they are claiming, it's a fake.

Good advice MS. I would also set your porn browser to never save anything. Firefox seems to hold up well if you locked that bitch down.

But 007 really should get a fresh install. She might also tell her son to quit using her PC to look at nasty shit.

Well, thanks for all the suggestions guys but I didn't even get to try any of it. Whatever that thing was shut everything down. :( And yes, I took it somewhere to get fixed and costs me too much money!!!!!!! :( Guess I need to find me a computer tech guy...haha

So yes, I am always very careful not to click on bs stuff, I don't go to porn sites ....but I do have a 16 yr old son lol But seriously he hardly EVER uses the PS. Everything he does on the net he uses his phone.

So how did I get that thing???????

I would have just followed Tarlam's advise and just got a new computer cause this one is getting old but it was bad timing with x-mas. Got my daughter a laptop for x-mas since she will need it for college next year.

So anyway, I'm back :) Over a week without the internet. ugh!

I don't want this again.............what can I do to protect myself better?

Like that other homo said, there's really no way to avoid it these days. The best answer is to try to protect yourself using the suggestions above, but more importantly, back up anything you want to keep on a weekly basis so next time you can just re-install windows and put your files back on.

Not if it's the "security" virus. It's not really that hard to remove if you want.

Doesn't matter what version of windows you have, the instructions are the same.

well, if you got the windows security one, then it really does look like a real windows app telling you you really have something wrong

i'm sure you'll get a few geriatrics to sign up for their virus removal tool. just like how some people still send money to that poor african prince who's trying to get his families fortune back

other people just like to fuck with others.

and then there's my idea that companies like norton and mcafee pay people to put these viruses out there. i mean, really. without those annoying viruses, those billion dollar companies would be worthless
