Tell Flynn he won't get a Super Bowl ring this year if he doesn't sign an extension beforehand. Even if he takes the victory snap. No deal, no ring.

I think you can sign Finley to a 2-year "prove it" contract (with a bunch of incentives) for around what the tag would cost you for a TE.

The whole issue with Flynn is the franchise number for a QB is ~$15m, and if you tag Flynn you need to make sure you have a trade partner lined up since you don't want to be left holding the bag there.

There's also the issue of "What to do about Wells."

But Finley will get the tag. Maybe transition for Flynn to see if they get picks in a bidding war. But I think they will take the normal FA draft pick compensation.

Good catch.

I think you can still swing it if you work out the details of the trade quickly. Flynn can't officially negotiate an extension with the team he'd be traded to until the cap deadline, but that's never stopped anybody before.

See if you have a trade partner before the tag deadline, figure out what sort of money Matt Flynn would want in an extension, and check and see if that's acceptable with the team you trade him to. If everything is in place before the tagging deadline, I think you can manage it.

Very doable...if Flynn goes to free agency, then it becomes a free for all. A few teams will be very interested in getting him prior to free agency. The Browns with Holmgren at the helm come to mind...who also have a spare 1st round pick. If they can't get Luck, they can get Flynn...which is probably the better move anyway.

Unless Matt Flynn thinks he will get a better deal on the open market. He can force the tag decision by not negotiating with the team the Packers select. Then its either tag or FA. I don't see it happening, its not in his interest to do it.

Well, at the very least Flynn's performance today likely guarantees a contract sufficient to make the 2013 compensatory pick the Packers would receive for him a 3rd round pick rather than a later compensatory.

True...but if the Packers tell him they are going to tag him regardless and not give him ANY say in where he goes, wouldn't it be in his benefit to work with Green Bay to find the best case scenario for all parties? I guess it comes down to how much Thompson feels we need to resign Finley, since we would probably have to franchise Finley to keep him.

If I were Flynn's advisers and I saw a $15 million payday for NOT playing, I would sign it in a heartbeat. Then the Packers would need to come clean, admit they don't want a $15 mil/yr backup and trade him in a firesale to a team HE could chose since he would need to agree to renegotiate his deal.

But, Flynn got lucky tonight thanks to how the season ended for the Packers. He got to showcase his stuff ad nauseum against a playoff-bound team and division rival.

Probably takes a GM on the other team who knows the player well, as with KC and NE. Seattle comes to mind for Flynn.

Seattle is tied with KC for spots 11 and 12, so that is a real possibility. On the other hand, most trades for high draft picks happen on draft day, or very shortly before. The teams that hold the picks figure the value will only go up as draft day approaches. A tag and trade of Flynn would happen earlier, so unless Seattle is sure they can work out a trade to move up, it might be worth it to them to secure Flynn with a second or third round pick.

Even a third round pick this year from Seattle would be significantly better than the best compensatory pick GB could hope for, which would be the 33rd pick in the third round of the 2013 draft.

if the packers lose in the playoffs it will be because of me (I'll take the heat mission). I'm heading on vacation in two weeks. I will be gone for both playoff games. I am vacationing with a couple that I have vowed to never watch another playoff game with. both previous times the pack lost. one of the games was the 4th and 26 game. its gonna be tough to avoid them for both playoff games.

Spend some time on Web MD to prepare some legitimate excuses. I am sure flat screen TVs are hazardous in some way.

Missed the game, had no idea what happened.

Just checked the score and laughed out loud. Not 'lol' but actually laughed. Flynn threw for 480 yards and 6TD's? Nice.

What happened with Johnson though? Looks like Williams was covering him, maybe with help deep from Peprah? Looks like they just didn't have a solution to him.

The NFL Network is airing a condensed replay of the game Tuesday night.
