OK, so now that we are wanna be's again I'm thinking it's time to start looking for the next pass rusher that will shine in the NFL and perhaps outperfom where he is going to get drafted....aka...Clay Matthews....Brooks Reed....... so perhaps Eli Manning does not have time to eat a quarter pounder with cheese and scan for the filed for another ten seconds on third and fourteen.

Here is a nice list of the top OLB Pass Rushers. Anybody have any faves ?? Since football in Wisconsin is over it's time for me to start hunting again for Draft Talk

2012 NFL Draft: 3-4 Rush Linebacker Rankings

Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB, Alabama
Height: 6-2. Weight: 263.
Projected 40 Time: 4.70.
Projected Round (2012): 1.
12/26/11: Upshaw was a disruptive force this year for Alabama. For the season, he has 44 tackles with 7.5 sacks, 16 tackles for a loss, an interception and two forced fumbles. Upshaw has impacted the game more than his stats illustrate. He had big performances versus Florida, Arkansas and LSU. Against the Tigers, he was consistently pressuring the quarterback and defended the run well. Upshaw had one sack but had a number of near sacks with hits on the quarterback. He finished the evening with six tackles and a sack.

Upshaw is proving to be the top 3-4 outside linebacker in the 2012 draft. He is an excellent edge rusher. Upshaw has natural pad level with good strength to shed blocks and the athleticism to weave around tackles.

8/24/11: Courtney Upshaw offers the schematic flexibility that many 3-4 teams love to add in their front seven defenders. Last season, Upshaw led the Crimson Tide with seven sacks. He also contributed 52 tackles with 14.5 tackles for a loss and four forced fumbles. He definitely is a good fit for NFL 3-4 defenses and projects as one of the top 3-4 edge rushing linebackers in the draft. At 6-foot-2, 265-pounds he has big size for the position.

Whitney Mercilus*, DE, Illinois
Height: 6-4. Weight: 265.
Projected 40 Time: 4.65.
Projected Round (2012): 1.
12/26/11: A typical game from Mercilus in 2011 featured a sack and a forced fumble. He leads the nation in sacks and forced fumbles. Thus far Mercilus has 52 tackles with 19.5 tackles for a loss, 14.5 sacks and nine forced fumbles entering the Fight Hunger Bowl against UCLA.

The junior has shown no mercy this season to offensive tackles and quarterbacks. All year long, Mercilus has been beating tackles with a combination of speed, strength and athleticism. He had a good game against Ohio State offensive tackle Mike Adams and Wisconsin's future NFL linemen. Mercilus is extremely fast and gets upfield in a hurry. His speed puts offensive tackles on their heels, and he has the athleticism to drop his hips and shoulder to turn towards the quarterback. Mercilus' strength can take linemen by surprise, and he has a powerful bull rush.

In run defense, Mercilus anchors and holds his ground well. He needs to work on shedding blocks in order to be able to make more tackles in the ground game. Mercilus has the athleticism and speed to be an edge rusher in a 3-4 defense in the NFL.

Brandon Jenkins*, DE/OLB, Florida State
Height: 6-3. Weight: 265.
Projected 40 Time: 4.67.
Projected Round (2012): 1.
12/26/11: Jenkins started out the season quiet, but he heated up in the second half. Jenkins has drawn extra blocking attention, especially in the early games, but he still got pressure on the quarterback even when not recording sacks. The extra blockers sent towards Jenkins helped teammate Bjoern Werner break out in 2011. For the season, Jenkins has 39 tackles with 11 tackles for a loss and seven sacks.

The junior was relatively quiet versus Oklahoma with five tackles and did not put much pressure on the signal caller. Against Clemson, Jenkins had a better performance. He recorded three tackles with a sack against the Tigers, and got pressure on the quarterback on a number of other plays. Jenkins is an excellent athlete who could fit well in a 3-4 defense as an edge rusher. The biggest negative about him is that he could be more physical at times.

8/21/11: Brandon Jenkins had a breakout season last year. As a first-year starter at right end, he led FSU in sacks as the Seminoles led the nation in sacks in 2010. Jenkins notched 13.5 sacks with 21.5 tackles for a loss. He had five multi-sack games and was voted the team's MVP. Jenkins is a good athlete with speed and explosion around the edge. Jenkins has the potential to fit as a 3-4 outside linebacker.

Nick Perry*, DE/OLB, USC
Height: 6-3. Weight: 250.
Projected 40 Time: 4.57.
Projected Round (2012): 1-2.
12/26/11: Perry really improved his performance over 2010. He finished the season on on a tear with 5.5 sacks in four games. Perry battled well against Stanford offensive tackle Jonathan Martin even though he didn't have a sack in the game. As the season wore on, Perry got better. He is lightning off the snap and his speed to turn the corner and cut back to the inside overwhelms offensive tackles. Perry has a good repertoire of moves, and the only thing lacking from his game is more bulk and strength. However, his current size along with his speed and athleticism make him a fit as a 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL.

Perry totaled 54 tackles with 9.5 sacks, 13 tackles for a loss, three forced fumbles and two passes batted this year. If he had decided to return for his senior season and continued to improve under Monte Kiffin before going pro, Perry could have been a high first-round pick in 2013.

8/21/11: Nick Perry broke out with eight sacks as a freshman. Last year, his numbers dipped to four sacks and 7.5 tackles for a loss. At his current size and weight, he would probably be better served as a 3-4 outside linebacker. Defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin flipped Perry from right to left defensive end last year. If he stays at end as a professional, he should add some more bulk. Perry needs to improve his production in 2011 to get his draft status going in the right direction.

Vinny Curry, DE/OLB, Marshall
Height: 6-5. Weight: 263.
Projected 40 Time: 4.66.
Projected Round (2012): 1-2.
12/26/11: In 2011, Curry has 72 tackles with 21 tackles for a loss, 11 sacks, three blocked kicks and six forced fumbles. He had a three sack game against Southern Mississippi. Curry has added weight from the 2010 season, roughly 10 pounds, yet he still looks fast and explosive. Curry has had to battle consistent extra blocking this season. Right now, his consistency from 2010 to 2011 has his stock moving up. He looks like an ideal fit as a 3-4 outside linebacker. Curry has a good get off and gets upfield in a hurry. He is very athletic.

8/21/11: Vinny Curry is an explosive athlete who had a dominant junior season. He was one of the best pass rushers in college football last year with 12 sacks. Curry also had 18 tackles for a loss and 94 tackles. At his size and weight, he should translate well as an edge rusher in a 3-4 defense. Curry is very fast with fabulous closing speed. He plays better in space.

However, Curry does not have the size and strength to hold up against offensive linemen when lining up with his hand in the ground as a base end. Some teams were able to run right at him. He typically uses his speed to run around offensive linemen, and that opens up his gap on run downs. Thus, Curry would be a much better fit for a 3-4 defense.

Ronnell Lewis*, OLB/DE, Oklahoma
Height: 6-2. Weight: 244.
Projected 40 Time: 4.55.
Projected Round (2012): 1-2.
12/26/11: Lewis played very well this season and has excelled at defensive end. His ability to rush the passer off the edge, while playing the run well, illustrates that he could be a good 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL. Lewis could fit as an inside linebacker in the 3-4 as well.

In 2011, the junior had 59 tackles with 13 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, five passes batted, one forced fumble and one interception. Against Texas A&M, the team with the best pair of offensive tackles Lewis faced all season, he had a good game with eight tackles, two tackles for a loss, one interception, one pass batted away and some good pass pressure.

Academic issues have made Lewis ineligible for Oklahoma's bowl battle against Iowa. It appears both that he has bulked up from his listed weight, and that he will also declare for the draft.

8/23/11: The junior Ronnell Lewis looked poised for a breakout season after flashing as a sophomore. Lewis recorded 3.5 sacks with an interception, a fumble recovery, and 37 total tackles last season in only four starts. The muscular Lewis is extremely fast and is a violent hitter. Lewis was a definite candidate to have a big season and put himself in position to declare early for the 2011 NFL Draft, but Lewis is missing practice with a personal matter. Plus there have been rumors that he could be academically ineligible to play in 2011. Off-the-field issues are always a huge red flag to NFL teams, so Lewis needs to come back and utilize his fabulous skill set to rehab his draft stock.

Frank Alexander, DE, Oklahoma
Height: 6-4. Weight: 255.
Projected 40 Time: 4.73.
Projected Round (2012): 2-3.
12/26/11: Alexander was having a strong senior year, but finished the final month of the regular season without much production. Entering Oklahoma's bowl matchup with Iowa and Riley Reiff, Alexander has 51 tackles with 8.5 sacks, 18 tackles for a loss, six passes broken up, three forced fumbles and one interception. He is quick and strong, plus has a good repertoire of pass-rushing moves.

Alexander had a very good game against Florida State, recording a sack against left tackle Andrew Datko. Versus Texas, Alexander had a massive game with three sacks and a forced fumble. Against two good offensive tackles from Texas A&M, he had a solid game. When the senior went against Oklahoma State's Levy Adcock, Alexander was shutout as he was dominated by Adcock. If Alexander plays well against Reiff, he could really improve his draft stock. Alexander stands up and rushes the quarterback at times, so he should be a candidate for 3-4 teams in the NFL.

8/21/11: Frank Alexander rotated into the game as a sophomore and freshman in his first two collegiate seasons. He recorded five sacks over those two years. Last year, Alexander started nine games and finished with seven sacks and 13 tackles for a loss. He had a huge game against Nebraska with two sacks and a forced fumble. Alexander has good physical tools with speed and agility. In 2011, he needs to become more consistent. If Alexander breaks out with a double-digit sack season, his stock could sky rocket.

Brandon Lindsay, DE, Pittsburgh
Height: 6-2. Weight: 250.
Projected 40 Time: 4.65.
Projected Round (2012): 3-4.
12/26/11: Early in the season against Iowa left tackle Riley Reiff, Lindsey was held in check. Reiff won almost all of their matchups, especially in the ground game. That stopped the momentum for Lindsey's draft stock. He also didn't play very well against Connecticut and their quality tackle Mike Ryan. Lindsey came back to have a good outing versus West Virginia with two sacks. For the season, he has 48 tackles with 11 tackles for a loss, 8.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Lindsey is a good athlete who might be best in a 3-4 defense. He is not very physical and can get pushed around when lining up with his hand in the ground.

8/21/11: Last year, Brandon Lindsey filled the void when Greg Romeus went out down with injuries. Lindsey broke out with 10 sacks, 51 tackles, 18 tackles for a loss and three forced fumbles. The fast, agile and explosive end will have to add some bulk for a 4-3 defense, and he could fit as an outside linebacker in a 3-4.

Shayne Skov*, DE/OLB, Stanford
Height: 6-3. Weight: 243.
Projected 40 Time: 4.61.
Projected Round (2012): 3-4.
12/26/11: Skov played well in the first two games of the season with 18 tackles, four tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks and a pass broken up. In the third game of the year, he blew out his knee, ending his season. The injury will likely force him to return to Stanford in 2012. If Skov enters next year's draft, he probably will be a mid-rounder.

8/24/11: Shayne Skov is a perfect fit in a 3-4 defense. He can play multiple positions and is a good edge rusher. Last year, he had 11.5 tackles for a loss with 7.5 sacks, and 84 tackles with two forced fumbles. Skov and teammate Chase Thomas should form a strong pass rushing presence from the outside linebacker position, and both players could see their stock rise in 2011.

Devin Taylor*, DE/OLB, South Carolina
Height: 6-7. Weight: 250.
Projected 40 Time: 4.69.
Projected Round (2012): 3-4.
12/26/11: Taylor started 2011 extremely slowly. Around mid-October something woke him up, and he had a strong three game stretch. Against Arkansas, Taylor recorded a sack, three tackles with 1.5 tackles for a loss, a pass broken up, and an interception returned 48 yards for a touchdown. For the season, he has 37 tackles with 6.5 tackles for a loss and five sacks. There are rumors are that Taylor will declare for the draft, but that could be a bad idea since he was the third-best defensive end on his team behind Melvin Ingram and Jadeveon Clowney. Taylor should stay in school and improve before entering the draft.

8/21/11: Devin Taylor recorded 7.5 sacks with 46 tackles during his sophomore season. He also broke up eight passes with an interception returned for a touchdown. Taylor is fast and athletic, and if he is drafted into a 4-3 defense, he probably will need to put on some weight. With Melvin Ingram and Jadeveon Clowney also drawing a lot of attention, Taylor should be able to improve on those numbers in 2011. The preseason All-SEC and All-American is expected to have a big season this year.

Cordarro Law, DE/OLB, Southern Miss
Height: 6-2. Weight: 261.
Projected 40 Time: 4.64.
Projected Round (2012): 4-5.
12/26/11: Law has been productive this season. He has 57 tackles with 17.5 tackles for a loss, 7.5 sacks and four forced fumbles. Law had big games against Louisiana Tech and Rice, but versus Marshall and Virginia, he was held in check. Law has a nice combination of size and speed. He stepped up and played well in the conference championship upset over Houston. Law is a sleeper prospect who could reward the team that drafts him. He looks like a good fit in the 3-4.

8/24/11: Cordarro Law has continued to add weight and could be moving himself into a permanent 4-3 defensive end. He played in the 240s and 250s the past two seasons and looked like a potential 3-4 outside linebacker. In 2010, he had 11.5 tackles for a loss and 5.5 sacks. Law had an excellent 2009 season, when he had 7.5 sacks and 14.5 tackles for a loss. Law's athletic ability makes him a flexible player as a prospect that could be a 3-4 or 4-3 defender.

Mychal Kendricks, OLB, California
Height: 6-0. Weight: 240.
Projected 40 Time: 4.59.
Projected Round (2012): 4-5.
12/26/11: Kendricks has 96 tackles with 13 tackles for a loss, three sacks, two passes broken up and two interceptions. He has increased his tackle total dramatically from 2010, but his sack production was nowhere near the same level.

8/23/11: Mychal Kendricks broke out last season as a rush linebacker for California. He recorded 8.5 sacks with 15 tackles for a loss and 66 tackles. Kendricks could use some more size to play outside linebacker in a NFL 3-4 defense, but has quality blitzing kills and if he has another quality season, should solidify his mid-round status.

Jonathan Massaquoi*, DE, Troy
Height: 6-2. Weight: 250.
Projected 40 Time: 4.70.
Projected Round (2012): 4-5.
12/26/11: Massaquoi had 52 tackles with six sacks and 10.5 tackles for a loss this season. He received extra blocking attention, but needed more production to help his draft status. Troy played Clemson and Auburn to start the season, and it hurts Massaquoi's draft stock that he didn't produce against some of the top opponents his team faced all season.

8/21/11: Jonathan Massaquoi broke out with 13.5 sacks last season and 20.5 tackles for a loss as a sophomore. He also had 76 tackles with a forced fumble. The speedy and athletic Massaquoi has a good get off with strong pursuit skills. He needs to add some strength for the NFL. That being said, Massaquoi doesn't shy away from taking on offensive linemen and plays with physicality. If he duplicates that production with all the double teams that are coming his way in 2011, his draft stock could soar.

Miles Burris, OLB, San Diego State
Height: 6-3. Weight: 235.
Projected 40 Time: 4.69.
Projected Round (2012): 4-6.
12/26/11: Burris was an excellent college player. As a senior, he recorded 78 tackles with 19.5 tackles for a loss, eight sacks and one pass broken up. Burris had a similar stat line in 2011 to his junior year production of 80 tackles with 20 tackles for a loss, 9.5 sacks and four forced fumbles. Against Michigan, he had some struggles with the Wolverines stronger linemen as they rode him out of a number of plays. In San Diego State's 3-3-5 defense, Burris was a rush linebacker. He would better off adding weight and playing in a 3-4 defense that can use him as a blitzer.

Darius Fleming, OLB, Notre Dame
Height: 6-2. Weight: 255.
Projected 40 Time: 4.59.
Projected Round (2012): 5-6.
12/26/11: Flemming has recorded 54 tackles with seven tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble. He has not been overly impressive this season and doesn't seem to take advantage of playing next to Manti Te'o.

8/23/11: Darius Fleming has played defensive end and outside linebacker for the Irish. In 2010, he recorded 49 tackles and led Notre Dame with 11 tackles for a loss and six sacks. Fleming has some tools as a rush linebacker, and could be in store for a big 2011 season.

Tevin Elliot**, DE/OLB, Baylor
Height: 6-3. Weight: 250.
Projected 40 Time: 4.75.
Projected Round (2011): 6-7.
12/26/11: Elliot hasn't been as productive as expected this season. He has 27 tackles with eight tackles for a loss, three sacks and one forced fumble. Elliot returned a fumble 86 yards for a touchdown against Iowa State. Baylor was in a lot of shootouts this season with plenty of pass-rushing opportunities, so it is disappointing that Elliot doesn't have more production. He should return to school and improve before going pro.

8/24/11: Baylor's Tevin Elliot had a solid debut in 2010. Elliot totaled 36 tackles with nine tackles for a loss and five sacks last year. He was an All-Big 12 honorable mention. The Bears play him at defensive end, but he is a better fit as a 3-4 OLB if he doesn't add weight. Elliot has a high ceiling and the potential to rise in 2011.

I'd be thrilled if Mercilus, Upshaw or Perry were available when the Packers pick. Therefore, TT probably doesn't like those guys. Melvin Ingram is also interesting. Definitely time to invest a high (rounds 1-3) at this position.

I plan on missing the draft. This is for the good of the team.

The only draft I've missed since 2003 was the year TT picked up Raji and Mathews. That speaks volumes. Though Bulaga was a sound pick and Sherrod may yet be as good as his draft status, the Packers need an impact player NOW. Clearly, I am a first round draft jinx. I know my duty is to suffer in silence, away from the TV and the forum 4/26/12. *Sob*.

The SI mock draft doesn't have anybody taking one of the top pass rushing OLB's in the 1st round before the Packers draft at 32. The first round is heavy on CB's and OT/G's other than the obligatory QB's.

That would be good news for us if that trend were to hold up, BUT .........

Wouldnt the Packers pick 28th?

I love Upshaw, but I've seen a lot of writers correlate Brandon Lindsay and Nick Perry to Green Bay. I think there are a good crop of rush guys, but we may have to move to get one, like an Upshaw.

The mock's from 1/10 so the order is a bit off.

yupper; I remember starting a thread fully dedicated to that hippy's play and intensity. Just think how fun it would have been watching him and Matthews play opposite sides.
JJ Watt and Brooks Reed tore it up for the Texans last year

Come on Tarlam, you need to stop drinking, Raji and Mathews just finished their third year in Green Bay. They were drafted in 2009.
