Foe those of us who grew up outside Wisconsin and didn't get most Packer games on T.V., he was the essential connection we had to the Packers.

I used to listen to Bucks games on a weak signal coming out of River Falls. There was the sound of squeaking shoes, the crowd, and Jim Irwin. Godspeed, Jim.

I had the privilege of running into Jim twice, once at the airport in Vegas the first time the Badgers played there in the mid 80s and once walking over the Michigan Ave. bridge here. I was probably the only one who recognized him. He was always the voice of home much like Uecker is now.

Jim Talkiing with Jon McGlocklin, talking with Max McGee - how more Wisconsin sports can you get?

I remember going down to a post-game interview once with Sidney Moncrief after a Bucks win at the Arena. Got to sit behind the two of them, just chatting on the radio, and then they sat there chatting with us - about a group of twenty or so fans - after the broadcast was over, for maybe 10-15 minutes. All class - Irwin, McGlocklin, Moncrief. Man, those were the days!

In college, while at one of the two bars in Madison with two satellite dishes (before Sunday Ticket, each network (NBC and CBS) broadcast the full slate of games on different satellites), I used to have to listen to Jim and Max over the PA system while trying to concentrate on the Browns game. After ignoring it for a while, I grew to like listening to them enjoy the game even as the Packers struggled.

It was never the same after McCarren joined in.

They must have hotlinking disabled.

RIP - Never heard of the guy but if he was a Packer backer he was alright.

Sorry Irwin's dead, of course, but for me, he was absolutely the worst broadcaster I've ever heard : always unprepared, totally cliiche-ridden, and devoid of true football insight. He always seemed to be more worried about making his plane after the game than providing a meaningful analysis of the action on the field.
I was overjoyed when Larrivee replaced him.

Green and growing.

It's a Basketball team, not a fungus! That's what we used to say, circa 1979.

Good story about the "Rainbow Jumper"

I was at a basketball camp as a kid, and Jon McGlocklin was a guest speaker. He had this 10-20 minute talk on basketball, hard work, character. Pretty standard stuff. As he's talking to us, he's shooting jump shots starting from just inside the foul line and moving back. By the time his talk is over, he's hit say 40-50 shots in a row and is draining them from 20+ feet out. The guy has to be around 40 years old, and is sweating, with slightly labored breathing. His talk over, he takes questions. Some numbnut seventh-grader from the front row asks "When are you going to show us a 'Rainbow Jumper?' McGlocklin looks at the kids as if he just accused McGlocklin of being a serial killer. In total disgust he says "That's what I've been doing."

Even back then kids couldn't listen and watch at the same time.

Jim Irvin and Max McGee were just the best. The alltime sweet & sour combo.

I don't mind those guys dying, it happens, but they never should have been permitted to retire.

You must be a big hit at eulogies.

Harlan: "I'm going to really miss Uncle Bill - what a guy. He was always my favorite."

Fellow mourner: "His name was Hal."

Please don't do the eulogy at my funeral.
