View Full Version : Ruvell Martin

At 6-foot-4 and 217 pounds, wide receiver Ruvell Martin knows he must use his body to his advantage.

He doesn't need anyone on the Packers coaching staff to tell him it's his best asset, and that he has to make it look that way on the field.

"We have an understanding I'm a big body out there and I'm expected to play that way," Martin said. "I expect myself to play that way. Once that ball is in the air I feel like it's mine, and when it's not I get pretty upset, because I feel like I should be able to make all those catches."

Martin is one of six receivers on the roster with one or fewer years of NFL experience battling for anywhere from two to four roster spots. His ability to win a lot of jump balls is a reason the Packers brought him onto the practice squad midway through 2005 and are giving him a legitimate shot in 2006 to make the final roster.

Like many of the rookie free agents, he's had his good days and bad days. He has flashed at times, catching three passes for 36 yards in the Family Night scrimmage. In a homecoming of sorts in the preseason opener at San Diego (Martin spent time in the 2004 and 2005 preseasons with the Chargers), he added one catch-and-run for 13 yards in limited snaps. On Wednesday during team drills, he nearly made a nice sliding catch along the sideline of a pass thrown by Brian Wrobel, but couldn't quite hang on.

While he hopes more big plays are to come beginning this week against Atlanta, Martin keeps his focus on simply doing what he's asked to do, even some of the things receivers aren't necessarily noticed for.

"He plays hard in the run game, plays special teams, gives you some value in a lot of areas, and that's what you're looking for in a backup receiver," receivers coach Jimmy Robinson said.

"He's a little unusual because he's tall and got long arms, and not everybody has that type of physique. So he does present some problems for DBs."

Martin caught a couple of passes from Brett Favre during team drills on Wednesday, and he feels he's starting to develop some chemistry with the veteran quarterback. But it's been an ongoing process that Martin hopes he'll have enough time to complete.

"He's a leader that tries to get everybody involved," Martin said of Favre. "He's a coach on the field and off the field, in the meeting rooms, telling guys what he wants done and how it's going to be.

"The main thing is everybody being on the same page, so a lot of times after a play is done I'll go over and just make sure that's how it is. I know (Robert) Ferguson and (Donald) Driver and those guys have a long history with Brett, and they know exactly what he wants, so I just want to make sure I'm on the same page with him too."

Try, try again
Head Coach Mike McCarthy admitted that if the Packers' running game is going to succeed, he'll need to be more persistent with it in calling the plays. The running backs only had 14 carries in 49 offensive snaps against San Diego last Saturday.

"The most important statistic in my opinion in running the football is attempts," McCarthy said. "I have to do a better job of giving us more opportunities to run the ball."

Preseason is still a difficult gauge, because there's so much substituting going on there's no way to tell how much the ground game might be wearing down an opponent, even if the yardage isn't substantial at first. But third-down efficiency is also key to providing more first- and second-down running opportunities, and the Packers converted only three of 13 third downs (23 percent).

"I've said before it's a four-quarter commitment to the run game, and I think we're going to be fine there," McCarthy said. "You just have to convert on third down and keep running the ball."

Adjustment made
During the team drills against the scout team, Favre and rookie receiver Greg Jennings tried to connect on a deep post route, as Jennings angled toward an open middle of the field from the right side, but Favre overthrew him by several yards.

A few plays later, they ran a similar pattern with Jennings coming from the left side, and Favre's deep ball hit him in stride for a big play.

Distinguished guests
Among the spectators at practice on Wednesday were Marquette basketball coach Tom Crean, Wisconsin-Green Bay coach Tod Kowalczyk, and NASCAR driver and Wisconsin native Matt Kenseth, who had a NASCAR film crew following him around and recording his every move, including a conversation with former Packers general manager Ron Wolf, who has attended practice the past couple of days.

Injury update
Wide receiver Robert Ferguson (heel) returned to practice. Tight end Tory Humphrey has a heavy wrap or cast on his right forearm but is continuing to practice. Cornerback Ahmad Carroll had an ice pack wrapped on his upper left leg during the last portions of practice but removed it before practice was over.

So what are the chances of him making the roster? I think if he shows some more production during preseason and training camp, he'll make it.

Driver, Jennings, Ferguson, Gardner, Martin... then if the coaches decide to keep 6, Rodgers.

But damn, can we PLEASE keep AT LEAST 5 wide recievers this year. We've kept 4 the past two years, and it always burns us, especially late in the season and in the playoffs.

BM,

I was at practice today, and the one mentioned in the article where he failed to make a sliding catch was he only ball I saw him miss. Of course, he is at his best when the ball is thrown high, because he can use his height to his advantage. McCarthy has talked about possibly keeping 6 WR's. If so, he makes the team. If they only keep 5, it's 50/50. He did field a few punts before practice today, and looked ok. That could help his chances.

I think he's gonna make the team. I think they'll keep six and Boerigter is the odd man out.

BTW, I hate Mark Boerigter more than any player on the Packers roster who stands a chacne to make the team. I would be SOOOO disapointed if that loser is on the roster come week 1.

I hope they keep 6. If they do, they will be:

1. Driver
2. Fergie
3. Jennings
4. Gardner
5. Martin
6. Rodgers

Boe should be out but Rodgers better show something soon!

If they keep 5, it is going to be a real battle between Martin and Rodgers.

Rodgers has a better chance to make the team than Martin. Thompson used a fourth round pick on him and isn't going to give up on him after one training camp. I think Boerigter's chances of making the team are slim to none, and the none is getting slimmer every day.

I agree on your 6. However, if it's 5, I think Martin as as good a chance as Ferguson. I think Rodgers makes it because of his potential as a returner.

Rodgers may have been a 4th rounder, but he was the 6th out of 12 players the Packers picked in the draft. There will be drafted guys that don't make the final roster this year. And I think Rodgers is going to have to play better than he has up to this point if he's going to make the team.

How can you hate the poor guy so much; he's just an undertalented white WR. But he's only played one game for us. Can't ya at least pick out a guy we've watched fail time after time after time for six straight years..........after picking him in front of a NFL Pro Bowl local WR.........you know my guy.

Trade him for a Bucket of Cow crap and fertilize the yard.

Cheers,
B

LOL...

As a WR, I can't stand Ferg either but at least he's a beast on ST's. I don't care what Patler say's, when Ferg gets a chacne as a gunner, he always wins his battle and changes field position.

He's not much into teams anymore. He thinks he should be playing receiver full-time, and his teams play has suffered because of it. He's still one of the five best receivers on the roster. At one point in his career, he was a solid #3 receiver. I think the Darius hit hurt him more than you'd expect. I'm not sure he'll ever rebound. He seems timid now--when he really went after the ball before.

If they are trying Ruvell Martin on returning punts they are giving him every chance to make the team, but he's on the bubble.

Ted Thompson will not cut his draft pick - Cory Rodgers.

The sure four are Driver - Jennings - Gardner - and because of his ST skills and place of seniority and lack of trade value - (sorry B.) Robert Ferguson.

Ruvell Martin is in over Boerigter base on his outstanding performance in all camps this Off Sseason and becaus he came out that he was fully prepared to give his all and he has. His height advantage also has to be attractive to Mike Mccarthy.

Ruvell Martin is one very tough cut. Is he eligible for the PS?

For your consideration.

From the Wed. August 16/06 TC Report (C.Christl):

Free agent receiver Ruvell Martin continues to make a run at a roster spot.

He caught a deep ball from Favre for his 23rd catch in 11-on-11 periods.

Only Driver has caught more with 24 catches.

Jennings has 22. Then, there’s a sharp drop-off to Gardner’s 13.

Ruvell Martin is winning a spot at WR.

GO PACKERS !

If they try and put Martin on the PS, I bet some other team will come and steal him. I am not sure if he can be put on the PS either. If so, it would be his last year of eligibility (sp?).

Driver, Fergie, Gardner, Jennings, Martin and Rodgers are my picks. I want 6 WRs kept. I think it is a must.

I remember McCarthy said he might keep 6 WRs. I don't think he can get away with that easily due to current problems at OL plus lack of depth at safety.
The 5 WRs should be : Driver, Jennings, Ferguson, Gardner & Martin but my guess is that they keep #4 pick Cory Rodgers over R. Martin. That's BS in my book. Keep C. Rodgers on PS instead.

I think the Packers WILL and SHOULD keep 6 WRs. They will have to keep only 9 DL or 9 OL. I would guess they would keep 9 DL. 5 DT and 4 DE. Who, I have no idea (besides the obvious). The problem is this, I don't see 4 DE worth keeping at this point. KGB, Kampman, Montgomery and who? Our rooks could use some time on the PS. I didnt see any of them get after the QB against San Diego. We may have to scoop up one from the waiver wire.

Also, we have a ton of DTs. I wonder if we are going to trade one of them? Allen, Williams, Jenkins?

Martin is qualified for the practice squad while Boerigter is not.

Don't be suprised by a last day pick up of what is floating around during the final cuts.

Yes your correct.

Ruvell martin on the PS = he's gone !

He has given too much towords himself and us to making OUR team, and given that. It makes little sense for Ted Thompson to cut him.

I believe sincerely, that won't happen.

Ruvell Martin has to continue to work as he has, and he'll be one of OUR WR's. I really believe he deserves nothing less than that.

He's beating out Gardner,Ferguson and certainly Boerigter. They always talked of the competition at all spots on OUR team, and if Ted Thompson cuts Ruvell Martin all that talk was baloney.

Count on this. Ruvell Martin makes OUR team.

GO PACKERS ! FAITH IN 2006 !!
