I'm surprised there is not a thread on this. Someone can post a link....not sure how (embarrassed).

Probably goes on with more teams.......but how shitty, really!!!

And he also did it with the Redskins. Lots of folks are in lots of trouble for lots of reasons. You're right. It is shitty. If you can't win by playing well, this is not the acceptable alternative.

Look at that towel!

Did you photoshop that in, Rand, or did Martin really have a "hit list" written on his towel made up of QB #'s?

This is like finding out D1 schools pay their players.

Was this after the interception? If so - then it's less appalling than if it was after an incomplete pass or completed pass to a Bear receiver. Still flagrant and refs probably tossed him to keep the game from turning into a brawl.

Did anything else happen to him - fine/suspension?

15K fine, 2 game suspension. That was the longest suspension for a game foul until fat Albert tried to kill Gurode in the Titan Cowboy game. haynesworth got a 5 game rest for that one.

The towel did not have a list of QB's that were targets. it was all Bears. Martin took the field that Sunday afternoon on Nov. 23, 1986, wearing a towel displaying the numbers of three Bears offensive stars--9, 34, 83--McMahon, Walter Payton and Willie Gault, respectively, plus 63 and 29 for Jay Hilgenberg and Dennis Gentry. In Bears-Packers lore, the numbers scrawled on the towel will always be known as "the hit list."

They were all assholes and big mouths (well, not Walter Payton, but you get the idea. Unfortunately, Charles failed that day. He only put one of 'em out for the rest of the season.

It was a filthy play and isn't how the Pack plays ball. But McMahon never shot Forrest Gregg the finger again.

And you could make the argument that that play cost the Bears a shot at another Superbowl championship. Although McMahon was just so-so as a starting caliber QB, he was a good leader and better than anything else they had, and Martin effectively detoured his career in Chicago.

A similar thing happened in 2000 though it wasn't an intentional 'hit' - Holliday sacked Culpepper and severely sprained his ankle. That was enough to derail the Vikings and they collapsed in the NFCCG the same year. Culpepper and Moss would play together for several more years, but they were never quite the same - that one play ended the Vikings run under Denny Green.
