I really like this guy. Grant is probably not going to be a Packer next year. I could see Starks being our starting RB and Tolbert being the big 3rd down back we've needed for a few years. He's coming into his prime, too. As long as he doesn't break the bank, I hope Ted kicks the tires on this one.

Agreed but what about Green and our draft pick this year?

Mike Tolbert Free Agent Running back. 26 years of age. 5 feet 9 inchs and 243 pounds. ***

Tolbert should command a third-down back caliber deal, probably just less than Darren Sproles' four-year, $14 million pact. Mar 7 - 2:22 PM

The Union-Tribune San Diego considers free agent Mike Tolbert "likely" to leave the Chargers in free agency.

*** San Diego's 2011 Special Teams Player of the Year, Tolbert is also a bowling-ball short-yardage runner and one of the league's top pass-protecting backs. He'll attract plenty of interest.

Not going to happen and if we do spend money on a FA it better be on a defensive player.

Our RBs next season will be Starks, Green, Saine, and Kuhn. TT might use a mid to late draft pick on a RB but no way hes spends big money on one even though Tolbert is a beast.

MM is on record as saying attention will be paid to improving our running game.

With a departure of Ryan Grant; TT will have cash to bring in Mike Tolbert who's young and a known talent who will have a key role on a Super Bowl contending team.

I like Tolbert, but I'm guessing his price will be pretty high because several teams will covet his services. I'm guessing TT decides to try to replace Grant through the draft rather than by FA.

I think Thompson will be more likely to use FA to find a replacement for Wells, as there are a few choices out there so one likely will be available for a reasonable price.

There's two reasons I don't think this would happen:
1) I never expect TT to sign a FA that the average NFL fan has heard of.
2) TT has a nearly pathological obsession with tall players, Tolbert would be the shortest Packer by over an inch.

i think the teams pretty high on green being the "other" rb to starks

I've always like the fat little polliwog, too.

He's a tough football player.

But FA's are against TT religion, so it's worthless to speculate on his signing.

The only FA that Thompson that I had really heard of was Wood.

& I thought that wasn't a good move at the time.

Isn't this the guy that was just running over the Packers defense this past year. If so, I'd like the move. But, knowing TT, it's not going to happen. If Grant isn't resigned, a mid to late pick will be used to bring in another player to compete at the RB position. Green I think may start the season on the PUP list.

That was the thing wasn't it? He finally goes and signs somebody and its a red flag fest for a very large pile of cash. T2 keeps us on our toes. Pickett was a lot easier to see as a fan.

I now know why the Packer PR guy's first reaction to Bob Harlan telling him he was hiring Thompson as GM was "But Bob, he's not very good with the press". He wasn't worried about Ted, he was worried his job just got twice as difficult!

Pretty sure it was Ryan Matthews who ran over us last year.

Nope. Tolbert had 19-83-1TD rushing and 4-59 receiving. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/201111060sdg.htm

Free agent RB Mike Tolbert is still visiting the Chiefs after Wednesday's Peyton Hillis signing.

Whereas Hillis managed just the one-year contract, Tolbert would be more of a long-term investment.

Multiple reports suggest Tolbert has enough teams interested that he won't limit his playing time in Kansas City. Mar 14 - 8:58 PM

Chargers in contract talks to keep Mike Tolbert

Kevin Acee of the Union-Tribune San Diego reports that the Chargers are in contract talks to retain free agent running back Mike Tolbert (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/5009/mike-tolbert), and negotiations have reached a “critical stage (https://twitter.com/#!/UTKevinAcee/statuses/180483003187871745).”

Per Acee, the team wants to know soon whether Tolbert is “in or out,” and may threaten to move on to free agent Jackie Battle (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/4291/jackie-battle) if a deal isn’t reached in short order.

Tolbert is a considerably more valuable back than Battle, though, so the leverage game shouldn’t be fooling Tolbert’s agents. Tolbert can pass block and catch passes. Battle doesn’t do either of those things particularly well. Tolbert is also a couple of years younger than Battle.

Tolbert’s market doesn’t appear to be crawling with suitors, however.

The Chiefs signed Peyton Hillis (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/4965/peyton-hillis) instead of him on Thursday, and Tolbert isn’t known to have taken any other free agent visits.

I like Tolbert for the role, but agree that it doesn't make sense for GB to pursue that. I don't think TT is going to pay that kind of money for a FA 3rd down back and I think we all believe that money could be used elsewhere (resigning Wells, improving defense).

If we are honest about the amount of money we are under the CAP. It`s pretty obvious that Ted Thompson doesn`t have a lot to manouever with and he has thoughts for where that extra money will be better spent.

ie He may intend on retaining Donald Driver. I`m tending to be resolved to this. We will loose Scott Wells. MM knows where our backup center is in his development and the decision may be best to go in the direction of a younger center.

Realistically... are we poised to make another Super Bowl run é Ted thompson is weighing that question Vs the tems most pressing needs.

GO PACKERS !

I think if there's a position we go after in FA, "running back" is way ,way, way down the list.

I would much rather acquire a free agent defensive lineman, outside linebacker, center, or defensive back than a running back. Give me Myers or Langford before you give me Tolbert.

Absolutely we are. We lost to the eventual Super Bowl champ and I would take our chances on a rematch, or against any other team in the league. I don't know that we were quite as good as our record, but we are without a doubt among the league's few elite.

Your positive attitude is impressive. Maybe infectious.....

We have questions of strength on our OL. We may lose our Pro Bowl Center.

We will draft and recruit to improve the 'D' and the only direction there is up.

In that last game Vs the GIANTS we were still in it until the fourth quarter and the wheels came off. We were still in that game inspite of a terrible performance by our normally potent offense.
