For all of the cap-ologists...

With Cliffy and Dud on the books, and rolling over a bit more than 5 million from last year, the Packers are about 5.35 mil under the cap atm.

Most of that will be needed for their rookie allocation, come draft time. To sign Wells or anyone else will require adjustments elsewhere.

Hard to imagine both Wells and Clifton being a Packer this year. Packers can clear about 11 million (15 million if Collins has to retire) be releasing Clifton and Driver. That is probably what will happen. And A.J. Hawk better kick ass in training camp.

Looks like we just got a little more space.

"The money will be reallocated to the other teams, with every franchise except the Saints and Raiders picking up $1.6 million in extra cap space."

So they're being penalized for front-loading contracts in 2010 because it was an uncapped year. I figured a lot of teams were doing that, but apparently they were warned not to do it.

Still doesn't seem like a lot of money to do much of anything.

Not going to lie. Outside of those franchises being saddled with their owners, this might be my favorite NFL penalty of all time. Second All-Time to Steinbrenner being banned from baseball.

ok, so the redskins just got nailed hard so they won't be signing any new players, they just traded all their draft picks, and they have no decent players to begin with

so what if RGIII, the man they traded all those picks to get, comes out and says he will not sign with the redskins if they draft him because they are a complete mess

would that be awesome, or what?

Well, well, well. It looks like the salary cap and CBA shenanigans from the pre-lockout through new-CBA days are still being played out.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/03/12/cowboys-redskins-say-they-complied-with-salary-cap-in-2010/

PFT concludes, not a slam dunk, but not off the wall;

1. NFL had a tacit agreement to hold the lines on salaries in the uncapped years. This was hinted at in the legal challenges during the lockout, though never completely vetted.

2. Cowboys and Redskins (and Saints and Raiders) seem to have violated this agreement.

3. Had the NFL denied the submitted contracts during this period (which the teams all claim fit within the applicable rules of the CBA at the time), the NFLPA would have sued under an anti-trust violation.

4. So why are the players agreeing to the punishment now and not using the leverage? Because without the NFL's consent, the new CBA cap number for this year would have shrunk down to $116 million, a decrease of approx $4 million from last year. Two years of salary contraction (plus a third year coming in 2013 when the increase, if at all, will be small) would have put De Smith's job in jeopardy.

Two things are left unanswered. One, even though the Cowboys and Redskins penalties are being distributed to the other teams so there is no net decline due to the penalty, its not clear at this $1.6 million increase is or is not part of the $120 mil cap number. Two, earlier reports said one reason for the cap number decrease problem was increased benefit cost. How much of that $4 mil decrease was the benefit increase? Was that increase more than $4 mil and actually ate what would otherwise have been an increase as well?

Always should just keep reading:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/03/12/nflpa-agreed-to-cowboysredskins-salary-cap-sanctions/

One source put the original cap number for 2012 at $113.5. At that number, it sounds like either the NFLPA got played or the NFL was trying to scare them.

PFT says their sources (yes, more than one) said that in exchange for signing off on the penalties to the Boys and Skins, the League massaged the benefit numbers and kicked in some revenue that otherwise would not have been counted to get to $120.6 mil. Still not clear if teams like the Packers would then be at $122.2 after the penalties, but it would seem that that is the case.

Best part of all this - the money the Redskins spent went to Haynesworth, didn't it? Seems like a crime to punish them for that again!!! lol

TT better do something with Donald Driver before he wins Dancing With The Stars. As it is today releasing DD will not be a popular move. TT has the added CAP space now to give Donald Driver his bonus with the league awarding extra CAP money as a result of the 'Boys and Skins' spankings.
