Any minute now I'm expecting to hear about a giant midcontinent collision of many dozens of players from 31 teams rushing to their new teams. The only rushing in Green Bay is away by the players who have been cast off or are leaving of their own volition.

TT has assembled a SB winner using his draft and develope philosophy. Are we now witnessing the demise of that team so soon because we can't pay the players that the Packers developed? Or am I just being impatient; or seeing the glass half empty?

I'm hoping the draft will be a pleasant surprise!!!!!

I think Ted's philosophy is fine - what's gone wrong is players that were kept on the roster for depth and development, didn't progress, and have proven they can't play.

Of course not all of these developmental guys are going to pan out and end up sliding into a starter's role - but what happened to the Packers is that multiple players, at multiple positions, all failed... and when players are all bunched in one area (front seven), you're going to be left with glaring holes to fill.

TT went offense, offense, and more offense in last year's draft expecting that Wilson, Wynn, Walden, Zombo, Jones, Greene, Neal, and Hawk were adequate front seven players - well?? lol... not so much, huh?? Greene is long in the tooth, but all those other guys fit TT's philosophy of stay young and develop - what does he do now that it's been shown there's nothing there to develop??

The Packers front seven is a completely dead unit - so what does TT do??

He made a phone call to inquire about Kendall Langford, and he'd certainly be a welcome addition, but unless TT brings in 5 quality front seven players, we'd still be a ways off from being able to field an average unit. I'd say bringing 3 quality, NFL calibur players, wouldn't do much to move us from being the worst defense in the NFL.

We need a complete transfusion at DE,DT,LB... we need 4-5 new solid rotation/starters on the field. After that, TT needs to address depth as well; afterall, if the starters we have aren't even good enough to be depth, what does that say about the depth behind our pathetic starters??

TT needs to start from scratch with the front seven.

wist I believe your right. not basically right or use any other qualifier. You've nailed it down. Our developmentle program cannot develop a better product from what's presently available. OUR 'D' is very bad without any real hope of really improving with our present roster.

I can certainly hope that Ted Thompson is insigtful / honest with himself and his roster to do the hard stuff. Eliminate and replace.

As Packer fan I will continue to look for some signs towords that result. I will do my best to believe in Ted Thompson. He may have the best blueprint . He needs to rebuild.

GO Ted Thompson.

Last year there was no OTAs or "real" training camp training time because of the lockout.

It obviously hurt the Pack in developing the Sam Shields of the world. MM seems to be able to develop players. Last year the time to do it was severely limited.

Bretsky

Every team could say the same.
Last year most experts felt like the teams that would get hurt the least by no OTA's were veteran teams like GB or PITT who went deep into the playoffs.
I think a lot of teams were negatively hurt for more than GB; Phily comes to mind.

Sometimes the musical chairs are funny. This mediocre receiver replaces that. A backup guard from here to there. Missing out on bargains like Eric Winston sucks, but then you see contracts like the one Pierre Garcon got and you're happy to keep out of that mess.

Flynn may have a much better oline and receiving corp on his side, but Flynn has shown more promise than Smith by far.

I'm NOT your enemy. Thank You Packer fan.

What exactly is your issue?

Are you missing the value of this thread in terms of the NFL Free Agency Process in it's most dynamic sense? The now.

In my initial post for this thread:

2012 Free Agent Watch

"I thought we could have a thread that's all about where FA'a are or are not going?"woodbuck27

Again sheepshead... this thread is dedicated to information regarding players that are Free Agents and their movements to secure a new contract.

My hopes for anyone here is simply take the time to read what's behind a post or any LINK and respond as you may feel.

I'm trying to have a thread for Packerrats overall knowledge. I acknowledge that possibly this information is most valuable to true NFL fans maybe not so much for more strictly Green Bay Packer fans. I assure tyou if your an NFL fan there is much to learn from this thread that's positive.

I cannot cater this thread with any distinction for both types of fans. I hope you see and understand this sheepshead.

Try to be nice man. (-; It may work best 'for you'.

Flynn picks the Seahawks

Comment woodbuck27:

He gets a three year deal. $26 M and $10M guranteed.

Reports are saying that... Flynn will sign a three-year deal worth up to $26 million, with $10 million guaranteed. The maximum annual value of less than $9 million reflects skepticism regarding Flynn’s ability to get it done as the week-in, week-out starting quarterback. And the “up to” means that the deal includes incentive payments, likely based on whether he plays.

I know it hasn't been mentioned but the 49ers should go after Fylnn.

Interesting thought. I wonder if they're looking for the "experienced" vet because their number 1 draft pick didn't do so well when tossed into the deep end.

I think the money that Flynn signed for justifies TT's decision not to franchise him. If Flynn couldn't get more than $10m guaranteed on the open market, it would be a hard sell to convince a team to give him $14.4m guaranteed and give the Packers a premium draft pick.

Part of this could be Flynn's representatives noticing how lukewarm the market was for Flynn and wanting another bite at the apple after the new TV contracts bump the salary cap up, and when there's not a first ballot hall of famer at QB available as an unrestricted free agent.

If that's really the market for Flynn, I could see franchising Flynn resulting in other teams having TT over a barrel in the sense that they had to give up Flynn and another player to get a draft pick that's not a day 3 pick next year.

I'm wondering if that's why New England had to throw in Mike Vrabel in the Matt Cassel trade.

I agree, but I think TT is absolutely vindicated in his decision to not franchise Flynn. Can you imagine the angst in Packerland if TT had cut DD and Clifton in order to make room to franchise Flynn, meanwhile Langford and Wells sign with the Rams, Myers signs with the Texans, Wimbley is a free agent, and Ted can't do anything in FA because he can't find someone to take Flynn off his hands for more than a fourth round pick?

Joemailman

No doubt TT made the right decision. I have to believe the availability of Manning hurt TT's chances of being able to arrange a deal prior to having to make the decision on whether to franchise Flynn.

Perhaps, but it is due to the epic flops of Cassell and Kolb that Flynn got screwed. Had he gone into FA 3 years ago, he would've commanded a king's ransom. Teams are now a little scared of taking a guy who is successful in another system, actually now having the thought that it won't automatically translate to theirs, which is probably more reasonable than their previous belief that any QB who looks good for 6 games is a franchise QB in the making.

If Flynn turns out to be a success, the next guy will probably end up getting a king's ransom again. It's all "what have you done for me lately" in the NFL.

I think Flynn got a good contract for what he is - a guy who has shown some promise, but not given enough of a chance to prove it. A ~$20mil/3yr deal is a long way from a 7th round pick who was supposed to be a camp arm while Brohm secured the backup role.

That contract is more than a 2nd round pick will get this year, that tells you something.

It didn't help Flynn to hit the market in the first flat cap year ever, either. 2 starts plus mop up time just wasn't enough. But I am pretty sure unless Pete Carrol has completely lost his mind that Flynn wins the job. He should get every opportunity in practice since he is making the most money. And his beard will go well with Charlie Whitehurst's.

My only concern for Flynn is WR where banged up Sidney Rice is option 1A-1D.

Comment woodbuck27: Please see the next post for this entire report of winners and losers so far in the 2012 FA.

Winner: Packers.

G.M. Ted Thompson rarely makes a big splash in free agency. The biggest exception came in 2006, when at the very public urging of quarterback Brett Favre the team signed cornerback Charles Woodson (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/840/charles-woodson).

Other than that, the Packers under Thompson take a very conservative approach, building through the draft and using free agency on a limited basis, with low-cost talent addressing specific needs.

It’s not sexy this time of year. But this isn’t the time of year when championships are won. Unlike downtrodden organizations (such as the Packers themselves in 1993, when Reggie White chose Green Bay from a long list of suitors), the Packers don’t need to do anything to fire up the fan base or breathe life into the franchise.

It’s the right approach for this specific team.

The Packers have won, once again, by doing nothing.

I think I have read that $26 mil is still a possibility if he and the team play at a very high level. But the compensation in the third year would encourage a redo. His minimum for two years is just over $13 mil and can be $16 if he starts this year (have not seen trigger laid out in detail). So if he flops, $10 mil guaranteed, if he starts and makes it to year two, between $13 and $16 mil. If he is lights out, new contract. Not a bad deal for either side.

I think the courtship of Flynn this year shows a little more caution by GM's. Yet, the contract he signed gives Flynn an awful nice chunk of change, while still allowing him to reap the rewards if he proves himself, both short term and long term. If he flops, the Seahawks are done with him very quickly, with no long term cap issues as a result.

Just strange how little respect the guy is getting. I happen to not like him, or his play much, but dammit, he brought the team to the playoffs, and beat the Steelers. Sure, with a lot of help from the D, but he 'did enough to not lose'. The Ravens won a SB with not much more at the QB position. I think Elway and the rest of the Broncos management is being asses about this - IMO they'd be a lot better off drafting and developing a QB they want, and letting Tebow play the next season or two instead of chasing the expensive pipe dream that is Manning.

Tebow brings a different kind of game. He reminds me of comments about QB's being slightly glorified guards in the 50's. I would think it's hard for DC's to draw on experience to play against him, kind of how the 3-4 D was a wrinkle that caused grief before it became commonplace.

Could Elway be thinking that Tebow can be a decent enough QB for them in the future, with a couple years' seasoning under a very capable starter who will take the pressure and limelight away from him for those few years? In the mean time, Tebow is an experienced enough backup who can be a real change of pace from Manning.

If he flops, the Seahawks are done with him very quickly, with no long term cap issues as a result.

Dang, if GMs all start being reasonable like this, it will make it harder for the Packers to compete!

I still have his personal email address that he keeps. I check in there a few times every day. Its unfortunate some of the thinkers on this site cannot chime in on the movements in FA. Do we really need to hear about every journeyman lineman switching AFC teams on here?

If im Denver I keep Tebow. How do you go into a game planning for Manning and still have the D ready for a couple of Tebow change ups??? I would love to see him playa halfback style a couple of times a game, and I think someone here said he had amazing hands in College.

03-19-2012, 03:36 PM
Could Elway be thinking that Tebow can be a decent enough QB for them in the future, with a couple years' seasoning under a very capable starter who will take the pressure and limelight away from him for those few years? In the mean time, Tebow is an experienced enough backup who can be a real change of pace from Manning.

This is interesting. I originally posted that I thought it completely impossible that Tebow would stay. Here are some reasons he might:

1) He is a stand up guy and he could tolerate the demotion. Wouldn't be a prima donna about it. No drama.
2) Although I thought that refitting the offense for Manning would squeeze out Tebow, the Tebow offense really isn't that complex. Guy could walk in at any time and run it, with minimal practice during the week, unless...
3) Tebow does learn and grow into a more typical NFL offense, as other have suggested.
4) Your points above make sense too

I still think Elway tries to get rid of Tebow, but now can see how he might be able to stay

Was he cut by the Colts or just a FA? He's 36, so I could see us signing him for the minimum in a 1 year deal. However, if he wasn't cut and signs for more than the minimum, it costs us the comp pick we just got for letting Wells walk (unless some team signs another of our FAs for more than vet minimum also). I wouldn't mind either way, I'm inclined to believe we won't sign him, though.

It's kind of fun to sit back and watch these guys get so much money and then realize how much value TT has gotten by resigning most of his own guys ahead of free agency. Admittedly, Hawk's contract looks steep after the year he had and TT had bad luck with Collins, but the contracts that Rodgers, Sitton, Jennings, Nelson, Bishop, Tramon, etc. signed all look like bargains now.

With all the negative media spin on the state of the Franchise in Miami in terms of apparent issues and complaints with the Dolphins GM and front office. Matt Flynn was wise not to get lured to Miami.

The story on the problems in the Miami Dolphins Organization is taking full force. I watched a discussion on this matter on NFL Total Access this morning.

It's bad in Miami. Players are avoiding Miami. Players are desiring to leave Miami. It seems that that organization waqs 'out to lunch' in it's aspirations or delusions to sign Peyton Manning.

I think in general teams a bit more careful with tossing money around on free agents just based on what has happened to almost every team in the past 10 years with getting burned on big contracts. You still have a couple big contracts (Mario, Jackson), but years ago, guys like Matt Flynn would have gotten a 5 year $50 Mil contract. Some of the "mid-range" contracts are even a bit lower, while you still say "wow" to guys like Garcon and Mechem for getting kind of semi-fat contracts. It may take a few years, but the draft numbers will help teams a ton. Now, if RG3 is a bust, it may cost Washington $20-30Mill as opposed to even 5 years ago costing them maybe up to $50mil.

Hawk seems like kinda the exception, but that may have been just due to the weird year. You can almost take it to the bank that if TT doesn't re-sign someone a couple few years before their contract is up, they will be moving on. It's a general strategy that keeps the team young and saves money.

Supposedly it's a 3-year deal for more than Bush's last 3-year contract, but it's not starter's money (Bush would have taken an offer from another team if it was a starting situation and starting money). Apparently the Rams, Cowboys, Cardinals, and Jets all wanted to sign Bush.

I have thought he takes way too much flak for his role. And I am glad he is back. I wonder how seriously he will compete for CB time with Shields, et al. Because while he more than holds up his end of the special teams play, its hard to get excited about this DB signing because he doesn't solve a starting problem on the defense.

No one is excited about resigning Jarrett Bush?

Supposedly it's a 3-year deal for more than Bush's last 3-year contract, but it's not starter's money (Bush would have taken an offer from another team if it was a starting situation and starting money). Apparently the Rams, Cowboys, Cardinals, and Jets all wanted to sign Bush.

That's funny Lurker64. Did you feel you had the scoop on that signing?

Maybe too many people are exhausted by the Mario Williams,Peyton Manning, Scott Wells, Matt Flynn etc. etc. watch's??

3. Linebacker Manny Lawson — The 22nd pick in the 2006 draft, Lawson has disappointed as an NFL pass rusher with 16 sacks through six seasons. Lawson is a freak athlete at 6-foot-5, 240 with low-4.4 speed and a 40-inch vertical, however, and he’s wicked smart (43 Wonderlic score). Lawson can set the edge against the run and has always been effective in coverage. With experience in both 3-4 and 4-3 schemes, Lawson should be generating more interest than he has so far.

The Green Bay Packers have interest in free agent linebacker Manny Lawson, according to Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal who cites a league source. The two sides have been in discussions.

Lawson, the 22nd overall pick by San Francisco in the 2006 draft, has 292 tackles and 16 sacks in six NFL seasons. The outside linebacker hasn't rushed the passer as well as expected at this level but has been strong in the run game

You two are bringing back some good old memories! I spent a lot of time in hockey rinks in that area, watching Junior hockey 15 years ago or so. Couchiching Terriers of the OPJAHL in those days had a few pretty good players, and played in Orillia, as I recall. OPJAHL also had teams in Collingswood, Parry Sound (Bobby Ore Arena), Durham and lots of places around Toronto. Spent time in Barrie watching OHL Then there were the NOJHL teams. I think I hit most of the Junior A teams from all around Toronto north to Sudburry and west to the Sault.

I still go back to Parry Sound to visit now and then. Beautiful area. The new highway from Barrie north is awesome!

I don't get that vibe. TT will take BPA. If there's an OLB there in the 1st that he likes, he'll take him. I am worried about the center situation though. I'm not from Wisconsin and don't see all the Konz hype. I hope he's not there when the Packers pick.

As far as I can tell, TT has three major holes to fill this offseason: OLB, Center, and DE. If he addresses one or two of them in free agency (not necessarily with top shelf players) then he can take one of the other needs with his best pick.

It's not like our need to upgrade Zombo, Jones, and Walden is really that more crippling than our need to upgrade Neal, Wilson, and Wynn.

A problem with following the NOJHL is that every 4-5 years half the teams in the league have changed.
Rayside put together some good teams for quite a while then, all of a sudden, they were gone. Ten years ago, I think it was down to 5 teams. A few years later they picked up a few new ones.

It has just gotten so expensive running junior teams that no one seems to last long doing it anymore. Ownerships change, and teams move.

It's a tough racquet. You need a solid volunteer base and community support to make it work.

In the 80's when I was growing up the teams were pretty consistent, although the Huskies disappeared the season after winning the league! I think a couple of other teams dropped out that year as well. Are you from that area? Can't think of how else you'd know the league!
