View Full Version : Warren Sapp/NFL Network: It is when it is (except when it isn't)

Okay, so Sapp tweeted that Jeremy Shockey was the informant to the league offices.

The NFL Network decided Sapp "would not be fired."

Sapp was reminded he is an analyst, not a reporter. So he cannot report.

Except that he tweeted this info on his personal account.

And Sapp's a contracted employee.

But his employer is also Shockey's employer, so Sapp could have put the NFL at risk for whistleblower laws if Shockey gets any extra "retribution" on the field or lockerroom.

Except that the NFL treats the NFL Network like an independent organization, not the in-house Pravda arm. They even say so.

So, a non-employee was disciplined for news he tweeted on his personal account that would violate federal laws if the NFL weren't so upstanding and trustworthy in its organization.

This Sapp situation requires Skinbasket's delicate touch in order to fully express how much Sapp and Shockey can bite bad things, suffer impalements, and swallow icky stuff for all we care.

just another sapp cheap-shot. how can shockey even defend himself? he can only deny it. what good will that do? it's out there now. even if an nfl executive said he didn't do it no one would believe it. very reckless. shockey ought to sue him (if he's innocent).

This thing is a big deal to me. I can't tell from the piece if Sapp was punished but if I were Shockey I would do my best to make sure he is.

Two reasons:

1. Shockey is looking for job. Being falsely accused so openly on the NFL Network can only hurt his chances. That's close to taking money out of his pocket.

2. Worse for me, is the whole "snitching" deal. Being labeled a "snitch" is a death sentence in some neighborhoods in America. Horrible crimes go unsolved and unpunished because only a "snitch" would cooperate with the police. When someone does get arrested and punished, people blame the snitch and not the original criminal.

Sapp has a big mouth, obviously, but even he is crossing a line when he labels someone a "snitch" because he knows how many Blacks interpret that word. It's the worse thing a person can be called. He's playing with fire due to the racial element here. He says that his "source" is reliable, well, is his source a former black teammate of Shockey? Who's to say that his source is not a racist throwing down on Shockey because he doesn't like him? Is it just coincidence that Shockey is white and labeled a "snitch" because he didn't experience the negative peer pressure of the anti-snitching code. Sapp's source needs to be identified and questioned.

Twitter or on the air, Sapp as a public figure is responsible for what he communicates. I think Shockey's reputation and career is close to be seriously damaged and if I were him I would seriously consider taking up the offers pouring in from lawyers who are urging him to take legal action against the 'QBKILLA' (and cheapshot artist) and the NFL Network.

I think the NFL has underplayed it, they should just come out and clear him if they can since Sapp, whether through official channels or not (or as a reporter or not) has already published the report. HBO would be another entity that might like this resolved.

But I am not sure Shockey qualifies for whistleblower status. Certainly not if he wasn't a source.

The NFL (http://bleacherreport.com/nfl) has finished the bulk of their investigation into the so-called "bounty scandal," as signaled by Roger Goodell's dropping the hammer (http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7718136/sean-payton-new-orleans-saints-banned-one-year-bounties) on the New Orleans Saints (http://bleacherreport.com/new-orleans-saints).
Head coach Sean Payton has been suspended for the entire 2012 season, team GM Mickey Loomis will sit out the first eight games, and former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has been suspended indefinitely.
But Goodell didn't stop there: He also fined the New Orleans Saints $500,000 and took away their second-round draft picks for this year and next year.
But did the punishment fit the crime? Was this even a crime, in your eyes?
And that's just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
Dan and I discuss the motives of Roger Goodell and what he hoped to achieve with this punishment. Is the bounty culture finally dead in pro football?

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton (http://bleacherreport.com/sean-payton) spoke for the first time on Friday after being suspended for one year by the NFL (http://bleacherreport.com/nfl).
Payton said, via ESPN (http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcsouth/post/_/id/32856/sean-payton-speaks):

I share and fully support the league’s concerns and goals on player safety. It is and should be paramount. Respecting our great game and the NFL shield is extremely important to me. Our organization will implement all necessary protections and protocols and I will be more vigilant going forward. I am sorry for what happened and, as head coach, take full responsibility. Finally I want to thank (Saints owner Tom Benson), our players and all Saints fans for their overwhelming support.
The Saints allegedly had a bounty program for injuring opponents while Payton was in charge for three years. While it was former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams who orchestrated the program, Payton was aware and did nothing.
Adam Schefter of ESPN (https://twitter.com/#%21/AdamSchefter/status/182508035074297856) tweeted on Wednesday:

Sean Payton suspended one year. Mickey Loomis 8 game and $500,000 fine. Saints fined $500,000 and a second round pick in 2012 and (2013).
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 21, 2012 (https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/182508035074297856)
The news has undoubtedly hurt the Saints organization and those associated with it. Williams has been suspended indefinitely and Payton's legacy, if not job, has been threatened. The Saints have yet to announce what they will do about the coaching staff.
For an organization just two years removed from a championship, everything has been turned on its head. It doesn't help that the scandal reportedly happened from 2009 to 2011 and the Saints won the Super Bowl in 2010.
Payton's statement on Friday was very formulaic, but he will undoubtedly be asked plenty of questions by the media if he attends next week's NFL meetings. It's quite possible that commissioner Roger Goodell orders Payton to the media session on Wednesday to further explain himself.

I just noticed this post as it landed on the thread, and it shouldn't be here. Somehow I failed to delete it outright and that revision option timed out I think. I cannot 'otherwise' explain it's content in terms of duplication of the original from which I 'only' desired the LINK and Title's.

I'll attempt to revise the post as a precaution against Copywrite Law. This post and the one that prompted this concern should be deleted from this thread if possible to clear any problem.

OK. I've managed to get the post to where I hope it's acceptable; not any Copywrite Violation or being accused of plageruiization.

Is it possible to remove the post (three above this post) and also this post ? Thanks.

The NFL wimps out....

The NFL Network responded Friday, in a statement to NBC Sports.

"We have discussed it with Warren and stressed that he is an analyst and not a reporter for NFL Network," said NFL Network Senior Vice President of Programming and Production Mark Quenzel. "In the future, if he comes across something he thinks is news he will let his producers know and before it is reported or Tweeted, that content will be subject to the same verification procedure that our reporters follow."

UPDATE:

After NFL analyst Warren Sapp declared 'on NFL ACCESS' that former Saints TE Jeremy Shockey blew the whistle on the team’s three-year bounty system, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said on NFL Network that Shockey isn’t the whistleblower.

The comments came during a press conference held in connection with the annual league meetings.

Roger Goodell also took issue with Sapp’s use of the word “snitch” to describe the whistleblower.

Lurker64

Commish clears Shockey and objects to calling anyone a "snitch".

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/03/26/goodell-says-shockey-isnt-the-whistleblower/

Goodell also said he might review any punishment levied but that the first step will have to come from NFLN. NFLN has refused to say what, if anything, had been done other than a review of who is a reporter and who isn't and that he won't be fired.

I think the Shockey should absolutely sue the NFL over this. He's got a pretty clear cut case.

I mean, if Shockey isn't the source of the leak then it's an obvious case of libel, if he is then it's a clear violation of whistleblower laws.

Yeah, if the roles were reversed, how do you think Sapp would have responded to falsely being labeled a 'snitch'?

THEN it would be a big deal. I hope Shockey pursues this, particularly if he doesn't get offered a decent contract.

Warren Sapp is walking on thin ice now. His mouth is his own worst enemy.

I'm not one for prejudice or' beating a dead horse', but I have limitations. I'll never forget Warren Sapp's cheap shot on Chad Clifton.

A fricken'animal behaviour', a cheap rotten shot that damn near cost our LT his future with the Packers. That fricken low blow CRAP shot is forever etched in my memory. It sickened me even worse than the pounding I observed Brett Favre take from the Saints in that NFC Championship game.

How can these PRO's behave like 'such animals' is one question ? To allow them to not go severely punished is not. This must be the result the FINAL outcome. SEVERE Punishment and nothing less.

This is a case of peoples lives. The ability to provide for family is at stake; as well as the overall integrity of the NFL and football 'in general'. This is a sport and this garbage low mentality stupid behaviour has to go and in process be harshly punished.

We're coming to learn soon the fate of the players implicated by all reports. The bottom line; ultimately they took this route 'to the dark side' and they need to be severly punished.

I'll not feel one bit sad if Jonathan Vilma is banned from the NFL for life. He deserves to get that just punishment as his position was certainly not professional and not anything close to what the NFLPA stands for.

Vilma is the answer to your question woodbuck. They are coached and encouraged to do that. Defensive coaches all want that kind of aggressiveness, and they run the risk that it occurs at the wrong time, on the wrong player or while a ref is watching. The Saints players are also proof that this approach has limits, as there has been much more ink spilled than blood from actual hits designed to knock players out of games.

Banning Vilma is not going to stop the behavior if players feel like that kind of play (or that kind of incentive) is required to succeed in the NFL. The guy who should be banned for life is Williams. The NFL has careful avoided a complete investigation into his time with the Redskins, Bills and Titans. They performed a cursory look, similar to the one they did at first for the Saints. In fairness, they may not have the smoking gun for those other teams that they were handed for the Saints. Or, perhaps, they do and the other teams are getting their first chance to clean it up themselves.

Its odd that no one recalls the head shot Rodgers took versus the Lions in Detroit during 2010. Jim Schwartz was a Williams disciple. It will continue because the NFL wants a public hanging and is not interested in hanging out its dirty laundry on a regular basis.

There are infinitely more helmet hits these days and a significant of them are due to coaches wanting a defensive player to put a hat on the ball. They have gotten what they wished for.

Yes pbmax but as an interested NFL fan:

I believe that the NFLPA will have a say 'ultimately' in regards to specific player penaltys.

Does J. Vilma get some break because he divulged his information and part in this scandalous story?

The NFLPA is not normally involved at all in the setting of punishments. Which suggests the NFL wants something in return for consultations. And they have turned over more details of the players involvement. So in my mind, Goodell is either trying to guard against a course of action after the punishments are announced (litigation) or he needs help deflecting the blame.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. There is something phoney about his entire act. Media used to give him kudos for asking what a reporter needed during an interview so he would be sure to give quotes that were on topic or tone. Its a lovely gesture, but when you are acting as your own PR firm, I doubt we have any idea what you truly think. He used Favre to bolster his fame (not as much as that twit on the Vikings).

If I remember correctly, he was falsely accused of testing positive for marijuana right before the draft, and it turned out to be false. I always loved that when he complained about it, it never seemed to occur to him that the Bucs planted the story so he would fall to them.

He was a great player though. Can't take that away from the cheap shot bastard.

No kidding.

I've a hunch that next time Mr. SAPP's contract comes up his first thought will be: I'm done.

His second thought might? be along these lines:

Would I make a decent ' Walmart Greeter '. Maybe the Walmart Personnel Dept. will love my moon face cheeky smile and not be an NFL fan.

Was Warren Sapp a great player? That's moot as anything he did on the field that was positive was trumped negatively by what the chump ass did to Chad Clifton.

I struggle with a prejudice. One that I cannot make vanish. I can't hate Warren Sapp as he's so pathetic. I also will NOT like him.

That seems ridiculous. Couldn't they simply have said "NFLN should have provided better guidelines, Sapp did not follow established protocol and we each apologize to Jeremy Shockey. As far as the reported item, we refer you to Goodell's statement on the matter. Again, we apologize." If they said this by Day 3, or after Goodell's statement on the matter, it would all have blown over.

I don't think NFLN, ESPN, TNT, etc., know how to handle the ex-athlete's turned paid analyst. They have to stay hip and maintain cred with the fans and the players themselves and need these guys to be relevant. So the ex-players get a longer leash (unless they take pix of their Anthony Weiner, i.e. Sean Salisbury) and double standards are bound to rise. So Barkley gets arrested for DUI as he was looking for a Lewinsky, but he stays employable. What would the NBA on TNT be without him? Boring. And boring doesn't draw in viewers or advertisers.

Now, for the shocker, Sapp was good on NFLN and won't be easily replaced. The man is a jerk but he knows the game and did well on TV. Without the "snitch" tweet and the follow-up comments on-air, I think his contract would have been renewed for sure.

Saints Bounty Scandal: Former Coach Mike Cerullo Reportedly Blew Whistle on Team
By Mike Chiari (http://bleacherreport.com/users/499306-mike-chiari) (Featured Columnist) on April 11, 2012 ...

" According to Ken Trahan (http://www.sportsnola.com/sports/saints/saints-news/583598-local-author-donnes-identifies-alleged-bounty-gate-whistle-blower.html) of SportsNOLA.com, freelance filmmaker and writer Alan Donnes believes that >>>

** " ... former 'Saints defensive quality control coach' ... Mike Cerullo ... 'was the one who implicated the team' and 'tipped off the commissioner's office'.

Donnes wrote a book entitled Patron Saints: How the Saints Gave New Orleans a Reason to Believe in 2007. Because of that, Donnes likely had his finger on the pulse of the team during that time frame."Article

** Comment woodbuck27: Ohh boy...this fella is accused! So be cautious and ask yourself is this accusation justified. Avoisd the Warren Sapp Syndrome and Demise.

I wonder how this news release makes him feel? Guilty or NOT guilty it's usually or always the same pain.

It's NOT ever good to be 'a RAT' or ever accused of such. Warren Sapp has learned a hard lesson. Maybe?

In my LIFE I've learned this as a fact Packerrats. Never never Rat out anyone.Worse never accuse another of being a RAT. Thats just plain dumb.

To be or accuse another of this IMO crime among gentleman and Ladies is 'JUST' wrong.>>> It's ALWAYS wrong. Anything to do with it is wrong and costly. It's worse than BAD or Dark Karma. it certainly gets you far worse than a bite in the arse IF YOU DABBLE IN THIS DARK THEATER. It destroys you.

IMO and best friendly advice: Be cautious of what you choose to believe. IMO it's just always best to stay away from garbage issues. To distance yourselves from TROUBLE.

Play with fire>>> Get burnt. Simple LOGIC.

This man felt he had an excuse. if he is...the perpetrator or RAT he didn't have any excuse for screwing himself:

" Cerullo left the team following the Saints' Super Bowl-winning season in 2010 but was unable to catch on with another NFL team. According to the report, Cerullo believed that Payton and Williams caused him to be blackballed around the league, and that is why he decided to blow the whistle on them." ... Article ***

*** Now please...don't read that and suck it in or believe that. You owe it to you to investigate crap like this in your own time and will. That's some advice folks. Take it or leave it.
