Drummer of The Band succumbs to throat cancer at 71.
The last performance of the original members of The Band was at the Last Waltz:

I've always loved his voice.
His recent albums are surprisingly good, given the throat.

The Last Waltz was pretty awesome, I remember staying up one night to watch the whole thing on VH1 Classics. Became a huge fan after watching it.

One of the very few times I ever saw a man almost die from syphoning a toilet bowl was at a club in Mississauga, Ontario in 1971 after an afternoon spent with Jack Daniels and KFC, too much sun and 'the Band' and ' Music From Big Pink (1968)' :

Levon Helm...Cool drummer and singer. Decent man. Big loss.

which reminds me, Levon Helm's southern soul carried a band of dopey canadians for 10 years.

Driving this band - The Band - was Levon Helm.http://static.stuff.co.nz/1335094319/746/6788746.jpg
"The first thing I heard was The Weight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aNN9X2oQbA). That loping drum groove is key, Ryan Adams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Adams) used it a bunch of times on his breakthrough album, Gold (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_(Ryan_Adams_album)).
I've played a version of The Weight many times over the years, in a couple of bands. As I struggle to ever get close to Levon's feel I sit there happily doing my best thinking of how effortless he made it seem. But it wasn't really effortless. And that's what I love about Levon. You watch this guy play, study the clips, he was working hard. He was happy to show that. The feel comes across as effortless because of the work he was putting in.
Music from Big Pink (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_from_Big_Pink) was The Band's debut album and it was the first album I heard from The Band too. I got there via Bob Dylan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Dylan). I went there for the Dylan covers. I stayed because of Levon." LINK
