Shit, I don't care who's 6th, we have a complete shakeup on the DL and all 3 additions are the pass rush type.

For those who are skeptical of the Daniels pick, Cullen Jenkins was undrafted in 2003 for the same concerns. The exact same concerns.

Boy, the Packers aren't fucking around with the front 7 in this draft. A big pass rushing OLB and two quick pass rushing type DL.

You'd almost think that Dom was installing the 4-3...

great tackler with speed. just what we needed.

I love the focus on getting pressure on the QB. A huge change last year that made both Shields and Williams look worse was the lack of any QB pressure.

RashanGary
04-28-2012, 01:29 PM
Our 2 DL are gap shooters. Our OLB is an all around outside pass rusher. Something tells me our ability to get after the QB is going to be a little better.

I had the notes on McMillian in the "safety dance" thread.

Jerron McMillian, SS, Maine
5'11” 203 lbs Round 7
Tackle-machine with an NFL body. Not much of a ball-hawk but the Packers worked him out so they must at least like him as a special teamer with upside.
40 Yrd Dash: 4.35 (p)
20 Yrd Dash: 2.53 (p)
10 Yrd Dash: 1.40 (p)
Vertical Jump: 39 (p)
Broad Jump: 10'06” (p)
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.22
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 17
3-Cone Drill: 6.69

WOW!..on those numbers.

Where did you reference them from?

RashanGary

I would have been okay with Winn there... why not Winn and Daniels with the back-to-back picks??

Dump Wilson, Wynn, Green, Muir... for a start :)

Why Daniels over Winn?

I think there is a myth that 3-4 DL shouldn't get after the QB.

It's mostly a joke since the guys we drafted are perceived by the media to be "better fits in the 4-3" since the mental image of the 3-4 is the 2-gap, run-stuffing system that Hank Bullough ran in the 80s, so you want tall, long, stout guys.

Our base defense is the 2-4-5 nickel anyway.

McMillian being interviewed on packers.com right now.

-he was a little surprised to be picked where he was
-didn't expect to be invited to combine
-their pro day was poorly attended, he was nervous after it, didn't think there was interest
-GB already feels like home, defensive coaches made him feel comfortable
-happy with the opportunity coming from a small school
-a fan of Nick Collins
-agent is Abu Topman (?)

Saying a lot of good things, came off very humble, happy to be drafted and still playing football.

I agree. He looks athletic though. Sometimes, kids are nervous and don't run well at the combine. 4.56 was actually good for a safety. Ranked near the top. The fastest safety ran 4.50 at the combine.

Ummm... at last year's draft we had the 2nd ranked defense and the 9th ranked offense. The point being that our defense looked in better shape than our offense at this time last year. Hindsight is 20/20 and it's easy to play couch GM.

I think I understand the Daniels pick now.

It's exactly the same thing as when the Lions took Ronnell Lewis. The Lions are a 4-3 team, and Lewis is small and stupid. So he's not going to play SLB, and he's too small to really hold up on the DL full time.

But what you can do with a 240 lb DE in a 4-3 or a 290 lb DL in a 3-4, is put that guy in for packages and get after the QB. So if you're comfortable with a 4-3 team taking an undersized outside pass rusher in the fourth, you can be okay with a 3-4 team taking an undersized inside pass rusher in the fourth.

I am entirely at peace.

37 (132) Green Bay Packers (compensatory selection): DT Mike Daniels, Iowa
Daniels is an odd fit for a 3-4 front, but he is very quick and active and likely will be trusted to make an impact on the inside as a nickel rusher.

38 (133) Green Bay Packers (compensatory selection): SS Jeron McMillian, Maine
With Nick Collins recently being let go and Charlie Peprah being an average starter, the Packers had a need at the safety position.

McMillian tested very well at the Combine and has special-teams ability.

Didn't they place Lawrence Guy on IR last year after training camp? He's like getting another defensive lineman prospect this year since last season was lost, although he had the classroom time, film study, etc. I wonder if he has a chance coming back? If any of these guys are impactful right away, they should be able to no only defend the run better, but push the pocket and get after the QB. If we cause the QB to move their feet and disrupt plays (not as concerned about sacks), that would help get more offensive possessions.

TERRELL MANNING | NC State 6-21/8|237 lbs|4JR Laurinburg, NC (Scotland County HS) 7/26/1989 (age 22) #35
A two-year starter, Terrell Manning was a four-star LB recruit out of HS, choosing NC State over Alabama, Florida and Clemson. After redshirting in 2008 from a HS knee injury, he saw immediate action in 2009 as a RS freshman (12 gp/2 st), finishing with 42 tkls, 2.5 tfl, 1 pbu, 2 FF and 1 INT. Manning became a full-time starter in 2010 as a sophomore (13 gp/13 st), recording 75 tkls, 10.5 tfl, 4.5 sacks, 3 pbu, 2 FF and 1 INT. He battled a knee injury in 2011 as a junior (11 gp/11 st), finishing with 76 tkls, 14.5 tfl, 5.5 sacks, 5 pbu, 4 FF, 1 FR and 3 INTs, earning Second Team All-ACC honors. Manning decided to skip his senior year and go pro.

STRENGTHS: Manning has good size for the position with effective length (321⁄4” arms). He plays fast with fluid movement skills and quick feet, showing some explosion to accelerate quickly with closing burst. Manning has natural body control and coordination to play over his feet through contact. He displays quick read/react skills and uses his eyes well, playing aggressive and active. Manning has strong hands to secure tackles and is a hard hitter, seeking out contact. He is tough and self-confident, trusting his abilities – toughed out injuries. Manning is an effective blitzer with some rush moves to avoid blocks and makes a lot of plays behind the LOS – led ACC in tfl in 2011 (14.5). He was productive over his career vs. both the run and pass (8 FF and 5 INTs over his career).

WEAKNESSES: Manning lacks great muscle build on his body and needs to get stronger throughout his frame – lacks stout lower body power. He needs to do a better job disengaging at the POA to fight through the trash, struggling to keep himself clean through contact. Manning has inconsistent tackling technique and needs to stay low and drive through the ballcarrier to finish – struggles to break down in space and uses inconsistent leverage. He has streaky discipline and will play overaggressive, taking himself out of the play. Manning needs to stay football-focused and can be discouraged too easily. He has strong durability concerns after to serious knee injuries – missed 2008 and part of 2011.

OVERALL: Manning suffered a serious knee injury in HS and missed his initial season at NC State because of it – missed two games in early 2011 after minor knee surgery, but made a quick return to the field. He flows well with the action and does a nice job getting to the play with a nose for the ball. Manning is an athletic and active defender who is always around the ball with effective range, playing speed and football awareness, but needs to refine his tackling technique and get stronger to disengage and sift through the garbage – underrated with WLB starting potential if he can stay healthy.

PROJECTION: 3rd Round COMPARISON: Daryl Washington WORKOUT RESULTS: 4.75 40-YD DASH // 22 REPS // 32.5” V // 9’6” BJ // 7.18 3C // 4.43 SS

http://walterfootball.com/college/NCState_logo.gif Terrell Manning*, OLB, N.C. State

Height: 6-2. Weight: 237.
40 Time: 4.63. Bench: 22.
Vertical: 32.5. Broad: 9-6.
Arm: 32 1/4

Projected Round (2012): 4-5.

4/25/12: Manning had 76 tackles with 14.5 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, five passes broken up, three interceptions and four forced fumbles in 2011.

He has some speed and playmaking ability, but should have stayed for his senior season. Manning has added more bulk for the NFL. He performed well at the Combine.

8/23/11: Terrell Manning had a solid sophomore season with 75 tackles and 10.5 tackles for a loss. Entering his third year as a starter, he is going to have to step up and be the man for the Wolfpack defense with Nate Irving moving on to the NFL.

Manning had a solid debut as a freshman with 42 tackles and 2.5 tackles for a loss. He should add some more bulk for the NFL.

Well, you gotta give them some credit. They were 15-1 but one of the worst D's statistically in history, and were not afraid to keep addressing the most glaring need; they got after it. The offense is getting Alex Green back and Brandon Saine provides depth. They can likely find someone in UFA land as an RB prospect. I wouldn't mind seeing an offensive line prospect, perhaps one WR prospect. If they were super concerned about backup QB, I'm sure they would have gone that route by now. Perhaps they can pick up a vet free agent as an insurance policy.

Well, if you actually need to defend the run from a 3-4, the DL need to be big and the trend is toward taller at DE and that post dates Chuck Fairbanks. However, no one runs as much as the used to. And second, none of these guys (maybe Worthy) starts in base 3-4. These are all sub package guys. And given the percentage of sub snaps the Packers play, devoting a roster spot or three to it makes sense.

However, the question then becomes which base 3-4 position loses its backup and do you have any depth for the base 3-4?

That is our pick BACK again from NE in our tradeup yesterday. we sent NE a 6 & both 7's for that pick back.

The Hoodie and TT are setting up their own little underground railroad.

You trade a pick one day for the move-up, then ya get it back the next day.

It's a rent-a-pick deal.

That reminds me of another NE-GB waiver system.

Good post Harv

Not sure what you guys are talking about... home post-op, flyin' high. Even thru the fog, I'm enjoying the draft though - no thinking allowed.

As I said in another post - Ted finally got the memo. I could clearly see the potential for bad happenins last off season; and I'm just as guilty of one thing that Ted is - put faith in Neal. The front seven as a whole?? I haven't been happy with for years.

I've been saying it for a long time - the front seven lack front line talent and depth; and the players are not well suited to their roles in either the base or sub packages. After looking at TT go absolutely nuts on front seven picks - I guess Ted agrees - finally ;)

Round 1, Nick Perry (OLB)
Round 2, Jerel Worthy (DT/DE)
Round 4, Mike Daniels (DE, sub inside pass rusher) - like this pick.
Round 5, Terrell Manning (OLB).

All 6 picks so far on defense... and 4 of them in the front seven; and all 4 of those have the skill sets necessary to fill a specific role in an attacking 3-4.

I'd say that, yes, TT finally got the memo; and just for having the balls to acknowledge how dysfunctional his front seven was - 5 years from now, I'll stand behind TT's efforts in this draft.

I applaud TT today.

The Packers are drafting Cullen Jenkins types on the DL. Both of those guys are quick as a whip. If the opposition decides to double our edge rushers and/or Raji, they're going to have another guy who can shoot a gap and either get a sack, hurry a bad throw or put the QB on the run where our edge speed will eat the QB for lunch.

Pressure up the middle, it doesn't always get as many sacks. QB's can see it coming, but it forces a lot of errant throws and broken plays.

I like the makeup of our line/OLB's. They have a couple studs and it looks like a couple guys who can beat single blocks. Pressure is going to be steady. And we have a lot of them. . . . They shouldn't wear down.

Then our back 5 is fast, fast, fast and ball hawks. Looks like we're trying to put together a good pass defense.

Biography: "Four-year starter that spent most of his career at left tackle. Missed the second half of his senior season with an injury to his shoulder. Also missed three games during his junior season with a similar ailment.

Positives: One-time highly rated tackle who's been pushed down draft boards due to injury. Plays smart football, keeps his head on a swivel and remains alert throughout the action. Works to bend his knees, keeps his feet moving and stays square. Gets his hands into opponents and seals them from the action. Is patient and makes good use of angles and body positioning. Possesses terrific size and is large enough to engulf opponents.

Negatives: Lacks classic footwork sliding out off the edge. Does not possess the overwhelming power necessary to finish blocks.

Analysis: Datko is a mechanically sound blocker with a good head for the game, but he?s been bothered the past two seasons by persistent shoulder injuries. Lining up on the weak side for Florida State, he's better suited for right tackle in the NFL. He must improve his run blocking and get back to full health to have any chance of a career at the next level."

Junior totals included career-best numbers of 56.3%/2996/26/13.

Positives: Adequately sized passer who flashed ability since his sophomore season. Effectively controls the offense, knows where his receivers are on the field and patient in the pocket. Buys time for receivers, waits until the last moment before releasing the ball and consistently makes proper decisions. Sells ball fakes, locates open receivers and throws a catchable ball. Puts air under deep throws, puts touch on passes and nicely places the ball into targets hands. Displays a sense of timing and for the most part hits receivers in stride.

Negatives: Often releases the ball off his back foot, which results in errant throws. Cannot drive deep passes. Slow taking his eyes from the primary target and going to secondary receivers. Coming off a disappointing senior campaign.

Analysis: Coleman displayed skill the past three years and possesses the physical skills and mental intangibles to compete in a timing or West Coast offense."

Projection: 6th

04/23/2012 - NFL DRAFT TOP QUARTERBACKS: B.J. Coleman, Tennessee-Chattanooga, 6-3, 233...An imposing physical specimen, Coleman has natural leadership skills that are evident on the field and around the locker room. He is capable of doing everything necessary to be a pro QB, but needs to learn how to do it and when to do it. Think of him in terms a very raw Brett Favre, who was pretty raw himself when he came out of Southern Mississippi. Coleman was considered one of the top prep quarterbacks in the nation when he selected Tennessee. But after seeing too little action, he transferred to Chattanooga, where his father Byron played (1977-80) with Russ Huesman, now the team's head
coach. After playing in only three games for the Vols, Coleman started 32 at Chattanooga and took advantage of the small-school competition to generate great statistics, but not enough experience against top players to help him improve. He is mobile for his size and has an arm that is so powerful that he needs to learn how to control it. He wasn't able to throw at the combine because of a broken pinky finger, but he wowed the teams that watched him at his pro day. For his career, Coleman completed 583 of 1,016 passes for 6,892 yards, 52 touchdowns and 32 interceptions. He ran for seven more scores and even pooch punted a few times. But if some team wants to take advantage of his ample abilities, it will require time and patience to coach him up to an NFL-caliber quarterback. Perhaps it was with that in mind that he selected agent Bus Cook, who also represented Favre. - Frank Cooney, The Sports Xchange

I was thinking that would be an interesting contract negotiation with Bus and TT. But I guess when you're representing the 243rd player drafted, there's probably not much negotiation. They hand you a contract and you sign it.

Derek Sherrod is also represented by Cook.

I absolutely love the Coleman pick.

The scouting report on him, in brief: "has everything you want but footwork and smooth mechanics"
What do McCarthy and Clements do better than anything? Teach footwork and smooth out mechanics.

Datko is also potentially fantastic value. His shoulders are a mess, but he's got franchise left tackle upside.

Yup. Graham Harrell will likely be the backup this year, but Coleman has more physical talent by far.

Thanks gbgary. Now I'd like to see a flyer on a QB and an OL Center type that we can groom for the future.

Just got back from a drive and we drafted.... a QB and a OL. Not a center, but still.

Outside, although I wouldn't rule out a move to the inside given his lack of height (6-2)

Moss was the coach brought to the PC. He is going to begin on the inside. Capers said he could rush from in or out.

Either the writers listening, or the Packer personnel who setup the conference call. Or both.

Oh ok...McCarthy said BJ was the most excited of all the UDFA's he called and BJ said he was the best pick the Packers ever made....lol. He later said he was caught up in the excitement when he made that comment. Cocky????

I didn't hear it, but scouts said the only real negative on the kid was that he was "too intense". Which sounds like me in a job interview: "Sometimes, I am a little too detail-oriented."

I 'like' the comment in the article on Datko: "The surgeries didn't take" Like that line from Mr. Mom about the guy getting 'fixed' Sounds like the guy had a shitty orthopod.

I knew zilch on BJ Coleman but the more I read about him, the more I'm baffled he lasted till the 7th round.

Datko is worth the [injury] gamble. Still, our OL is still lacking true depth and balance; other than a superstar QB like AR would be killed by Packers pass protection.

I wonder how long it'll be till McCarthy pulls him aside and tells him "the next time you mention that MF'ers name, your ass is on the bus back to Bumfuck Tennessee".

The good thing is that BF Jr. will be appeased by the fact that TT went out of his way to sign Moss yesterday, that should soothe over some hurt feelings. Ted is a crafty one.
