Some OLD but some new here as well:

Packers' Favre back for one more run
QB reunites with McCarthy

Green Bay, Wis. — Packers general manager Ted Thompson and quarterback Brett Favre were walking the streets of downtown Canton, Ohio, a few weeks ago. They were there for Reggie White's induction into the NFL Hall of Fame.

"Several of the Hall of Fame people were escorts, and they understand what's going on," Thompson said.

"They were all kidding Brett, saying,

'You'll be back in a few years.' "

Brett Favre threw 29 interceptions last season, most in the NFL. A revitalized run game should help this season.

Favre decided to postpone his five-year wait in April and return for another season, to delight of the Packers and their devout fans. Although some had turned on Favre for stringing everybody along.

But the quarterback who Jerry Glanville thought wasn't good enough for the Atlanta Falcons is back for what might be his final season. In Ron Wolf's fleecing of the Falcons, Favre went to Green Bay on Feb. 10, 1992, and the Falcons got two draft picks which were used to select running back Tony Smith and cornerback Frankie Smith.

The offseason drama and a shaky exhibition opener behind him, Favre will face his old team at 8 Saturday night at Lambeau Field.

"There were some anxious moments in the offseason last spring when he didn't know, everybody was wanting to know, and nobody had an answer," Thompson said.

"My only concern during that time was that he not make the organization look bad."

In the Packers' exhibition opener, Favre was knocked around by San Diego's defense. A rebuilt line, including two rookies, didn't hold up.

In his weekly meeting with the Wisconsin media, Favre would not question the wisdom of his decision to return for another season.

"But all that is in the past now," Favre said.

"I'm here to play. I'm very satisfied with the decision I made."

Folks haven't seen Favre get tossed around like a rag doll since the early days of Mike Holmgren's tenure.

"I'm sure a lot of people watching that game the other night were saying, 'Whew! I bet he's thinking he'd [rather be] at home,' " Favre said.

"And that's not true. I'm committed to this decision. I'm committed to helping this team win regardless of who we have."

Favre's main hope for optimism is the return of running back Ahmad Green, who was scooting around just fine in practice Thursday. He's set to return for the Pack's third exhibition game, against Cincinnati on Aug. 28, after rupturing his right quadriceps tendon in Week 7 last season.

With a running game, Favre won't try to shoulder too much of the offensive burden. With Green down and several other key injuries last season, Favre led the NFL with 29 interceptions.

"I love to pass the ball, but the only way you win is by rushing the ball very well and playing great defense," Favre said.

"Then you're not in a position where you have to throw every time."

Favre has been reunited with old quarterbacks coach Mike McCarthy, who was named head coach on Jan. 12.

"I think I've got a pretty good feel for what he likes to run," Favre said.

McCarthy was Joe Montana's position coach in Kansas City and was offensive coordinator for New Orleans (2000-04) and San Francisco (2005). He says that Favre, a three-time MVP who will turn 37 in October, can bounce back from last season's 4-12 performance.

"He's had a great camp," McCarthy said. "He's really into it. Physically he's in really great shape. He's thrown the ball very well."

Jeff Jagodzinski, who was the Falcons offensive line coach last season, was hired in Green Bay as their offensive coordinator. He worked with Favre from 1999-03 as an assistant in Green Bay.

"He still has a live arm, and he's such a competitor," Jagodzinski said. "He's proven that time and time again."

The perception under Mike Sherman's regime was that Favre had too much freedom and was not held accountable for his poor throws.

McCarthy debunks the notion that Favre will be on a shorter leash in his hybrid West Coast offense, which includes the Denver/Atlanta style run blocking scheme.

"I know people are concerned about that, but I don't look at the negatives," McCarthy said.

"My outlook is on the positive side. We're going to line up every week to win football games. I know that Brett Favre gives us the best chance to win those games."

Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, a big Favre fan, sympathizes with his down season.

"You really can't say that it was all Brett and he's fallen off as far as his career," Vick said.

"He can come back and win a Super Bowl this year if he's got the right talent around him and a great defense, plenty of guys to run the ball, catch the ball. You never know; the sky is the limit. I have nothing but respect for Brett Favre."

"I'm been watching him for a long time. One of my best friends, that was his team growing up. So all I would hear growing up was 'Brett Favre, Brett Favre.' You just had to be a fan."

Thompson doesn't know how or when Favre is going to hang up his No. 4 jersey, but he's already planning for a return trip to Canton.

"When he is first eligible, he will be making that speech," Thompson said.

"I'm not sure if he's going to like making that speech."

I am almost certain Brett Favre will not be playing his last season for Green Bay.

I predict a win against Da Bears, a few losses. We might go 1-4. Then we'll go 6-5 finish.

We will win the last 4 games, overwhelmingly, because our rooks and other young guns will finally get it.

Since TT has the cap in great shape, Brett knows he's a T.O. type player away and TT goes out and finds that dominant offensive and defensive weapon. This is far too much promise for Brett Favre, and he comes back for his legitimate last run.

Then, he retires with his second Ring.....

Then, somebody from Hollywood buys the rights and turns the Brett Favre story into the best NFL/Sports hero ever made.

Tarlam!, I'll give you an A for creativity and optimism. That grade turns into an A+ if all you predictions come true and I'll pay your way to Vegas to try our luck there. Good thoughts.

Tarlam:

An interesting script you write there Tarlam. YOU go to you and the Man that enjoys his craft or working with movie scripts.

I am the same, in the sense that. I often go to me, to my personality, my interests and hobbies and react in my ego driven desires - my personality.

We are different as individuals, yet, share a common trait. We are loyal Packer fans. In that we share some sort of bond.

The end of the introduction.

Earlier, I predicted a 7-9 finish also, but I now reserve the right, to wait till TC is over, to make a final prediction for 2006.

Who is Brett Favre? What does he stand for as a Man, a PRO QB, a Green Bay Packer? Where lies, Brett Favre's ego? In that his destiny - his fate?

When will he retire, and how well will he be performing as a QB in OUR eyes - ALL eyes? Do the HOFer QB's of OUR NFL Modern Era - mentor to Brett Favre, in some manner?

I will go with your post, as if you are sincere in your context and thoughts, Tarlam.

Based on interpretation of your post. I ask myself could that happen? The Packers in the Super Bowl in another season?

I don't see that if Favre retires after this season, and I feel he will if something alot better doesn't materlize in 2006.

I began to think about the possibility in the context of - would Brett Favre retire or leave "the Packers", and later return to another orgsnization?

Based on what I see in Brett Favre.

He has alluded several times in the past - most recently made statements in this off season. That he only wanted to play and retire as a Green Bay Packer.

I see - believe or TRUST the following:

I trust Brett Favre as a man of his word. Few human beings, get the TRUST that I afford Brett Favre.

I believe, he is certainly an exceptional human being and as real, as any PRO atlete allows us to see. He is in my view, very straight up - very honest and very much a Green Bay Packer, with uncommon leadership, dedication to win and certainly loyal to all Packer fans. His fans, and Packer fans around the world and the citizens of Wisconsin.

Brett Favre is indeed a true ICON in the NFL. Few will ever gain his status as an Icon in the future of the NFL for most of OUR lifetimes.

I then took it a step further, and look back at NFL history. I examined those HOFer's that "in fact" played primarily with one Organization and then ended their career's elsewhere.

Who is on that list of HOFer's? They are:

Joe Montana, Bobby Layne, Warren Moon, Joe Namath, Johnny Unitas, and (possibly we could include the Great Y. A. Tittle in this group as well? ).

Then I look at these HOF QB's from the modern era in the NFL, who played their entire career's with one Organization:

Terry Bradshaw, John Elway, and Cowboy QB's - Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach, the Dan's - Fouts and Marino, Bob Griese, Jim Kelly, Steve Young and I'll end this list, with a man named Bart Starr.

What group of HOF QB's above, will Brett Favre identify with - is an interesting question, Tarlam.

Brett Favre's agent, Bus Cook, is also a very close and allied FRIEND of Brett Favre's. What would a friend recommend to Brett Favre after his days in Green Bay are over?

What is the prognosis for Favre's final games as a starting QB for OUR team Tarlam? We saw his agony expressed on the field of play in 2005. We saw his determination to win at all cost to his statistics. He had his team, despite all else - in so many games that we ultimately lost.

Brett Favre had us knocking on the door of victory in many games that culminated in defeat. Defeat for the Packers, for us Packer fans and himself.

His sacrifice's from long before the season began, in terms of preparation was exemplary. He was let down dreadfully by adversity and by the reality of the TRUE strength of the team he tried his BEST to lead throughout the season. We saw his frustration .We saw him seem to quit.We know now that he was done in his mind at the cullmination of 2005.

Why is he back? Do we really know the answer to that?

Favre says that influencing factors are credited with the sound support of Mike Sherman - to take time out to really see where he was. Favre says by accident, he one day heard Phil Simms advise that as long as he had the ability to play at a strong level in the NFL he need not retire as that will come as Life directs him too.

That ( or retirement) may be after this season, as we are certainly not properly prepared to seriously be a contender today.

I read a quote made by OUR Packer GM Ted thompson that certainly surprised me. I will post on that soon.

Back to the question.

Tarlam.

I sense, that although Brett Favre still loves football, and certainly respects the demands placed on him as OUR starting QB.

I observe that Brett Favre believe's that OUR team can shape into winning form with the talent we do have led by OUR Vet's. I sense that, as the starting QB and leader on OUR Offense along with Ahman Green, that Brett Favre is going to be challenged, way beyond, what he should have deserved to expect.

Is he back for the money? I hope so.

That's something he now, finally deserves, plus he make's about half his Packer pay again, in endosements. He can't let the commercial sponsers down, but most of all he can't let his Packer fans down.

He had too much support from fans, to just up and retire. We know his Family respected his final decision, but unanimously wanted Favre to come to us again. To not retire.

Favre 's return is very good for Aaron Rodgers potential to develop for us in the backup QB role, and this off season we finally see that development, but he's not ready
for Prime Time, with the evidence to date. That could suddenly change.

Favre returned a Packer, for all he is as a person, and for the Packers and his fans. Can you imagine where we would be without him today? I believe you can Tarlam.

What will today lead too?

I hope that Mike McCarthy is sensable in tonights game, concerning how to handle his starting QB (Brett Favre) in just another preseason game. He doesn't have to showcase Favre in Lambeau at the risk of serious injury.

Brett Favre is in jeopardy. So is Ahman Green behind OUR OL.

It's a REAL MESS !!!!!

So what will Favre do once this season plays out?

Tarlam "my Packer fan friend, living and surviving in Germany "

I don't know.

Too much up in the air man, way too many questions and an OL that must get to protecting Brett Favre and Ahman Green, and the rest of the players on Offense . . . at the total sacrifice of themselves.

Once Favre's days as a Packer are finished.

If I was a close friend, and I saw he still had the physical ability to play QB at a high level in the NFL, with a contender. If he still has that Brett Favre desire to win. I'd be as Mike Sherman was.

I'd ask Brett Favre to go inside of himself ,to take his time and determine the answer.

I'm a Packer fan. I'm a Brett Favre fan.

Only Brett Favre is Brett Favre.

Tarlam. This is a long long post and Man I apologize. I thought I had an answer as to what Brett Favre woud do - after The Green Bay Packers.

I was wrong.

I want to see Brett Favre have a real chance again!!! I'm selfish on that.

Personally I would think. He'll RETIRE - a Packer.

This is Brett Favre though. HE WANTS TO WIN !!!

GO PACKERS ! FAITH FOR OUR FUTURE - SUPPORT FOR PACKER FANS !!!

PS: I have finally stopped editing this DAM post.
What a screw up !!

'buck, that was a long post and I know you were being kind and sincere, but, I really have no idea what your key message was, except, that you don't know what #4 will do at the end of the season.

My message was, he'll be back....

Tarlam.

In fact I read your message very early this AM and the movie script part of it so intrigued me that I misinterpreted the DAM message and I posted this AM early, and it didn't set into the forum.

I posted on other threads and came back to YOU, and didn't re-read your post until I posted again, and I was way off base ,as I misinterpreted your message as Favre remaining a Packer and leading us to a Super bowl in 2007. My head - had you believing he would win with some other contender. . .

as I totally can't accept us being a contender with things in place as they are now.

That may change I hope. Fingers crossed.

Rather than just loose it all, and delete the DAM thing, I had to edit and edit to get back to YOUR post's thought's. Also save all my efforts.

I'm bad today !!

What a mess I am. Guess - I'm under pressure today, as a Packer fan.

GO PACKERS ! FAITH FOR OUR FUTURE !!!!

I hope he has a great, healthy year this year and rides off into the sunset. I hope Roders steps in and plays like Palmer, Manning and some of the other great young QB's and then we win a SB in the next 3 - 5 years. I don't see us winning one this year. Next year, you never know but I have a feeling it is going to be a few more so I just want to see what Rodgers got and let him learn next year.
