Ok, every night from about 11pm on I hear this crazy animal in my backyard. It has to be right outside my house because it is so loud even with the windows closed. I'm afraid to let my dog out in the backyard anymore at night. I turn the very bright yard light on and it doesn't bother this crazy ass animal. It's not a cat in heat because I've heard that before. This is a really weird screeching sound and sounds like it's in distress or fighting or something. Bats aren't that loud are they? Ok you outdoors people..........what kind of creature has taken over my backyard at night???

This is where you call in the Skinbasket with his semi-automatic and have him just spray the whole yard til the screeching stops. At first, I thought you might be dealing with racoons, but it's well past mating season. Maybe it's a gay racoon, upset over being hounded out of the Boy Scouts.

I can handle this one. You got a case of jungle fever back there, woman.

This incident reminds me of the most cringe-worthy Grateful Dead lyric, from "Looks Like Rain":

Did you ever waken to the sound, of street cats making love?
And guess from their cries you were listening to a fight.
Well you know- oooooooooh, hate's the last thing they're thinking of.
They're only tryin' to make it thru the night.

We do have racoons around...have to triple secure the garbage cans every week or they make a big mess. Wonder if ground hogs make a weird noise, had one of them hanging around a couple summers ago.

OK. Get some recording device and record this sound best you can .Then take that recording to a wildlife specialist. Going outside for a look see at night is likely a waste of time and anything involving a gun not productive and possibly criminal.

Simple plan to get rid of screeching animal:

1) Find animal
2) Shoot animal

Things used to be pretty simple in the good 'ole US of A.

This fucker did make any noises as he was walking thru my backyard. Didn't even make noise as the life was draining away. Madtown, shot him with a Remington 870. $300 at walmart. Number 4 shot.

One that scans the whole yard? lol

This is some crazy shit....never heard anything like it. The only wild animals I've seen here are racoons, possum (wonder if it's one of them...they look pretty crazy!!), ground hogs and deer.

FWIW some of us own and make productive use of guns. We had a magpie problem for a short time. Now I look forward to stopping a moose problem (he typed while salivating). Where is that hunting thread again?

To begin with, here is a video of a barred owl making its usual sounds. Do you hear this once in a while?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fppKGJD3Y6c

If you do, then you have barred owls around and they can make crazy ass insane noises that go "Gwock Gwock Gwock gwock ock ock ock ock ueluluuelululuhOOwaah!"

You can hear something of their crazy talk in this video, but I've heard much crazier.

you watch too many tv shows.

Its not going to blow this thing apart. I have 135, 1oz pellets in the shell. My improved cylinder is going to put the majority of those pellets in a 24-30" diameter circle at the 20-25yrds the shot was taken. Those pellets are not exiting the critter, so you won't get the large exit wound. sometimes its tough to even see an entrance wound. enough pellets busted thru this little bastards tough hide and took out his vital organs. he bled out internally. now had I shot him with a rifle or a deer slug and had the bullet had time to slow down enough to not simply pass right thru (more for the rifle and less for the slug) I am sure it would have given the effect you were hoping for.

I've seen a 7mm mag almost blow the front shoulder of a deer off. on the exit side. on the entrance wound, almost nothing.

what is interesting, is how quick the damn flies found this thing. it was only minutes and they were already swarming.

Pictures were real, the back story was BS, i.e.: claiming it was the bear that killed and ate someone else and that it was stalking and hunting dude. Dude was stalking and hunting the bear.
