insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result

So are the people that continue to live under sea level in and around new orleans who once again refused to evacuate insane, or are they just really stupid?

I think its time to give the area back to the french or mexicans and let them deal with the dullards

Have you thought maybe they can't afford to leave? Or maybe their job ain't that easy to transfer?

But yeah if you can afford it get the fuck out of there.

Insanely stupid. Can't leave is one thing; refused to leave is another. I would need to check my twitter feed, but I believe FEMA had places set up for evacuees to stay. They just had to be able to get there.

you guys are playing small ball. Go for the floating cities! They've cut the formaldehyde levels by almost 5%!

most people in the low-lying areas couldn't get loans to rebuild after Katrina, so the problem has mostly been solved.

New Orleans seems like a hurricane magnet. Could be all that sinning.

How exactly is a glass floating city supposed to survive in a hurricane? The only hope is if they can move it and that doesn't look very mobile... come to think of it, how do they avoid baking like a greenhouse?

What about that gay billionaire Peter Thiel's idea? A whole nation.......they could even have Boy Scouts at sea.

That, my friends, is the "Seaview" with the "Flying Sub", if one looks closely, one can see Richard Basehart in command.

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result."

I really like this thread.

I really hate that quote. It is fundamentally inaccurate on many levels. A lack of resourcefulness is not insanity. Nor is it accurate to impugn the intellect that has calculated that many multiple exertions of some actions will yield only a small ratio of positive results, the intellect already having decided that it can proceed with certainty if it deems the rewards worth the efforts.

Nevertheless, if I am a poor slob and I turn off Cartoon Network long enough to discover that a Cat 2 hurricane with a twelve foot storm surge is heading my way I will put my grandma in a shopping cart and push her six miles north and look for a nice dry high school gym manned by the Red Cross and see if they have put out the ham sandwiches yet. If I leave at ten a.m. I should make it there by three p.m.

Or I could steal stuff from my evacuated neighbors and climb up on the roof later, but I wouldn't think that insane is the word that would describe me then.

Good point!

Now I feel like a moral relativist.

Is it morally sound, in the face of a natural disaster, to steal a shopping cart from the Food Lion to transport a loved one to safety?

If yes, then is it still morally sound to steal the red lingerie from your neighbor's house to protect your head from flying debris?

(I just realized why red lingerie popped into my head as the first absurd thing I rummaged for and I curse you mraynrand for the damage your image search has done to my brain.)

When the hurricane is coming, they just float to Brazil for a week. A couple of outboards and they should be mobile.

Gosh, I want to live there.

"Hey, I won't be in this week boss. I woke up in Brazil."

That's what we did in NOLA in '98 waiting for Georges. (except that I was pregnant and couldn't drink. But the gay pride parade as the winds kicked up was a good time as well)

That would seem nice until you realize that a floating city would have to be connected to some sort of infrastructure or you'll be taking all your shit with you. Literally.
