Jason Garrett could simply be propping up his QB after Peter King asks him about Eli Manning. Or King could be overstating the importance attached to the quality. But if he believes this statement wholesale, its quite apparent where the problem in Dallas' offense stems from:

Garrett, being a former quarterback himself and tutoring a pretty good one in Tony Romo in Dallas, has strong opinions about what makes a quarterback good. Garrett thinks surviving adversity and being able to bring your team back late are two of the biggest signposts to quarterback greatness. For instance, he thinks one of the great games Romo's ever played is a five-interception job at Buffalo on a Monday night five seasons ago. "Because he struggled for a long time in that game, he hung in, he came back twice in the fourth quarter from deficits, and he found a way to get it done,'' Garrett said.

Wouldn't it be far more effective to not throw five interceptions?

or you could just catch a snap and get it down for the kicker, and these 'window' questions might not happen!

Great QB - throws few interceptions, a bunch of TDs and rides the bench while his backup does mop-up duty in the 4th quarter.

Great competitor - doesn't get down after monumental or numerous individual screw-ups. Has to be scratching and clawing to win a game in the last quarter that a great QB would be watching from the sidelines.

The two are not synonymous.

Great QB - accurate, cool (reponds well to blitz), and quick on the release. These three traits are shared by only two QBs in the league today, Brady and Rodgers.

other things that help are mobility, toughness, and arm strength, but a lot of QBs have those

Great QB - in a large market and has volume stats for the media to talk up like he is a surefire hall of famer.

I'll take the guy who puts you in a position to win almost all the time (so no thanks to 5 ints)

A grat qb is many things, green bay fans are spoiled. Their idea of a great qb is so far off the spectrum it is ridiculous, almost as ridiculous as think that Tony Romo is a great qb, good but not great.

This is a passing league now, more passing TDs less interceptions and more yards than ever through the air. Passing is the new fad at every level from high school on up through the nfl. So the term great is all a shifting label. Bart Starr was a great qb, Johnny U was grat but they didn't throw for five thousand yard in two seasons much less one.

I'm sure people here would agree both the above - the great competetiveness and grit, plus the ability to play so well your team is comfortably ahead in the fourth quarter, are important elements. Nearly every NFL QB is a competetive guy - or else how would he get where he was? (Well, except maybe that ex-Illini QB with the great, great arm, who played for a few NFL teams but never seemed that interested in the game - damn, what was his name?) It's a question of what you stress. And I like the calm, cool, accurate guy who can play smart and great and get his team ahead better than the Heart Attack Harry who throws three interceptions in the game but pulls a brown, stinky football win out of his butt in the last two minutes.

But happily OUR QB has all of these qualities and that is why he is considered to be the best player in the league.

I don't even care why, Pug, I'm just happy he is considered the best player in the league.

No one wants a QB without grit. At least 60 grit. Jeff was like wet toilet paper.

But grit isn't the mark of a greatness. Its a character trait that helps.

It has to be above 120 grit....for that fine, smooth finish.
