Its not the replacements fault for being in this position. They are trying (often failing) to do a decent job.

Its the bozos who approved their hiring 2 months before the season who need to revisit their decision-making.

So Easley overruled Rhone-Dunn on the last play. Look, we know how this works - just ask Brandon. If this is about the Packers getting jobbed, nothing will happen. If you make this about race - Easley's judgement was the final word over Rhone-Dunn, because Dunn is black, then we can get this thing reversed. Race wins every time. Get Al Sharpton involved. Threaten sponsors. Play the race card, and I guarantee you, Goodell will reverse the call.

That's what I mean by the crews not collectively overcoming an individuals error in knowing or interpreting the rules. In this case they did not even seem to conference about it. Too often in games I have seen, they have conferenced and still gotten it wrong.

It really is shocking that there could be such a drop off in terms of quality between the regular refs and the replacement ones. I mean, think about all the complaints about blown calls with the regulars the last few years. It's ironic that those guys are the heros now.

I completely agree, and I'm sure they are trying their best. But, I think the question "what are their qualifications?" is a valid one.

I know there are no Division 1-A referees (I know it's a different name now). Many major conferences have a referee development contract with the NFL that precludes them doing so, and the other 1-A conferences chose to follow their lead. Many are junior college or high school referees; I think there might be some D2 and D3 referees. Some are retired or former 1-A refs. Rhone-Dunn used to be a Division 1-A official and even worked the Sugar Bowl a few years ago. It figures he'd be the one who got the call in the end zone right and was overturned by Easley, who's a California junior college ref.

Want to read something even more infuriating? The official overseeing the botched replay last night was none other than Phil Luckett. He's the putz who couldn't even get the coin flip right in a Steelers-Lions game. They now make the visitors call it before the coin is tossed because of this clown.

This incident furthers the "Luckett legacy". His fuck-up in the coin toss is only one of his famous screw-ups. NFL films did a mini feature on Luckett and all his mess ups when he was an active NFL referee. Luckett should have contacted the referee down on the field and schooled him to get involved in the situation becuase they had a hot replay that needed to be factored into the decision.

The Seahawk debacle is the fourth or fifth famous fubar in Luckett's long career.

It looked to me at the time (and still does) as though he looked at the Back Judge first and thought the Back Judge was starting to raise his hands signalling "TD". Instead, the Back Judge signaled Touchback while Easley banged his hands up in the TD signal because he thought the Back Judge was going to do the same.
