Still waiting for the attempt.

That suit must really be something if he can endure the speed (nearly 700mph), the pressure and heat, and not pass out.

Apparently, he pulls the parachutes rather than being automatically deployed.

Old school, pioneer stunt stuff. Very cool.

The reserve parachute has an automatic deployment system that will activate at a prescribed altitude if the main parachutes have not been deployed and if Baumgartner has not manually deployed the reserve. So, if he should be unconscious, for example, the reserve will deploy.

One article said the main chutes were left completely manual because the dangers of premature deployment, or deployment in a bad situation were just too great. This will allow him to decide when to deploy them based on what is happening, while the final automatic reserve gives him one last level of fail-safe if all else goes awry for manual deployment.

Up, up and away! I have been watching it live. They have cameras in the capsule, outside the capsule and long range tracking cameras. Live audio feed of communications with the capsule. This is fantastic!

Old record for such a jump - 102,300 feet set in 1960! The guy who set the record is the capsule communicator for Baumgartner's mission.

Target for today is 120,000 feet, but it could be as high as 130,000 feet. They will go as high as the balloon continues to rise, until it reaches equilibrium.

This guy is nuts. And this must have cost an incredible fortune.

The guy who was really "nuts" for his time was was Kettinger, who jumped from 102,300 feet in 1960. He went up in an open gondola, not a capsule like Baumgartner, and Kettinger wore a primitive pressure suit that looked like coveralls. This was a year before Shepard's first US space flight, so you can imagine the primitive technology used by Kettinger. He did it while we were learning how to survive at those altitudes.

A lot of the astronauts are top level scientists too. The early ones were the test pilot/daredevil types, but scientists have taken over. There is hope for your kid yet!

From Wikipedia:

Kittinger's first high-altitude jump, from about 76,400 feet (23,300 m) on November 16, 1959, was a near-disaster when an equipment malfunction caused him to lose consciousness. The automatic parachute opener in his equipment saved his life. He went into a flat spin at a rotational velocity of about 120 rpm. The g-forces at his extremities have been calculated to be over 22 times the force of gravity, setting another record.

So what did he do after that near disaster? He tried it again less than a month later! Then, 8 months after that he went up to 102,000 feet and did it again!

it also looks as though part of his fall was through the clouds. I end up in the co-pilot seat of a small aircraft quite a bit, and the time in the clouds is a little eerie, can't imagine falling through them. Although my guess is that the picture might be deceiving.

BBC is supposed to have a six hour special out in four weeks. Baumgartner had helmet cameras, but nothing from them was shown in the live broadcast. I expect that will be BBC exclusive footage.

Or Michael Vick.

A little off-topic, but what's so bad about Vick? Its not like he murdered or raped another human being. Vick killed a bunch of dogs. Dogs are animals. Who hasn't killed an animal?

2 years in prison for killing animals. Fucking ridiculous. If the idiot conservative judge who sentenced Vick were emperor of Earth, we all would be in prison. If you have ever slapped the shit out an annoying mosquito that so innocently landed on a part of your body, you, too, are guilty of killing an animal.

"- Above about 62,000 feet, the liquid in Felix's tissues could turn to gas and expand dangerously, a condition called ebullism, but the suit will maintain pressure around his body to prevent such expansion"

I wonder if this is painful. Even with the suit it sounds like it is.

Did Felix Baumgartner create a sonic boom? And if so, would he have heard it as he fell at 840 mph?

i don't think there was a sonic boom because of how thin the air was up where he was going so fast
heres a picture of a jet going throught the barrier

http://home.comcast.net/~diannerosekelly/PRHS/Sound/Pix/sonic_boom2.jpg

the boom comes from an object pushing through the mass amount of built up air in front of in.

so if the air is very thin, theres no big build up of air to go through, so no sonic boom, at least thats the way i understand it

but of course i'm usually full of shit

If you didn't see it, here is their website info on the suit:

http://www.redbullstratos.com/technology/pressure-suit-and-helmet/

Credit 'Red Bull' for sponsoring the event. Big bang for the buck in terms of future sales revenue, I'm sure.

The materials of the balloon ("Material: It is constructed of strips of high-performance polyethylene (plastic) film that is only 0.0008 inches thick. In total, these strips would cover 40 acres if they were laid flat. Polyester-fibre reinforced load tapes are incorporated to do the weight bearing.") and the suit ("The suit is designed to provide protection from temperatures of +100°F to -90°F.") are very, very intriguing.

It would be interesting to know what consumer sectors are being targeted in terms of development.

A lightweight material that can withstand extreme temperatures only has, .....say, a million different uses. :-)

Red, you sounded like you knew what you were talking about, so I decided to look around and see if I could prove you wrong. Turns out he did make a sonic boom, according to the recovery teams.
"It was Mach 1.24. Our ground recovery teams on four different locations heard the sonic boom," said Clark, a former high-altitude military parachutist and NASA doctor who worked on escape systems for space shuttle astronauts. http://in.reuters.com/article/2012/10/16/usa-space-skydive-idINDEE89F00X20121016
