Actually, it looks to be for 2 2nd round picks. However, the trade can't be finalized until March 12, so this deal could fall apart or change.

I just checked that:
http://nesn.com/2013/02/report-alex-smith-traded-to-chiefs-for-2013-second-round-pick-similar-pick-in-2014/
The 49ers completed a trade that will send Alex Smith to Kansas City, according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports. The 49ers will receive a second-round pick in 2013 and a “similar pick” in 2014, according to Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News. The trade can’t officially be made until March 12 when the new league year begins

San Francisco 49ers get richer with Alex Smith deal
By Gregg Rosenthal ... Around The League Editor

" Let's review. The 49ers now have two picks in the top 34 overall, and at least five picks in the first three rounds. They have 12 picks overall, with more compensatory picks expected to be on the way. San Francisco is in position to increase their talent base significantly in the next two months through the draft or trades.
The 49ers can move up in the draft if they want. Or perhaps they now have ammo to pull off a big trade for a veteran player. They were reportedly kicking the tires on free agent cornerbacks at the NFL Scouting Combine, and the best cornerback in football, Darrelle Revis, just happens to be available. "

San Francisco will be laughing all the way to the bank on this one. Two 2nd round picks for an average QB at best? You have to be kidding me.

Your not interested in the team to beat in the NFC? Your not interested in what the Packers have to do to compete with this team?

Things certainly do look rosy for SF right now.
I guess Alex Smith works for KC, he's 28 and reasonably proven. But it's not like they're getting much younger, Cassel is only 2 years older, I guess they've entirely given up on him. A second round pick (top of the second round...) and $40 million over 3 years...ouch!

Chiefs have some talent. If Smith plays well for them, he's worth 2 2nd round picks. Andy Reid has been known to abandon the running game though, so it will be interesting to see if Smith is a good fit for what Reid wants to do.

That's not the news. The news is KC just traded away more picks for another guy who'll ensure the absolute struggle for mediocrity continues for that god forsaken team.
Until SF uses those picks, this has no bearing on the 49ers or, more importantly what it'll take for GB to compete with them - which is obvious anyway - to improve the talent of the defensive front 7 and continue to evolve the offense to keep it effective and fresh. In other words, TT and co need to field the best team they can while maintaining a sustainable foundation for the future and injuries, which is pretty much exactly what's been happening for years. Not sure why I would worry over what SF is doing with a backup QB or an unused 2nd round pick.

IF SF really is the team to beat in the NFC this off-season, based on the lessons of past history, they likely won't get too far in 2013. Lately it seems that being the "team to beat" is the kiss of death.
Isn't there some ungodly high percentage of losing SB teams that don't even make the playoffs the following year?

You know what Woody is a crazy old fuck but you are being a young little bitch. How is it not legit news? I saw this thread and immediately commented about the trade to 49ers fans. They of course are already taking this as a sign they are going back to the big game. Fuck them!!

Pretty easy to understand the factors behind this trade.
John Dorsey had years and years listening to MM mutter to himself, "I left Alex Smith for this?" while watching AR run the team. When Dorsey got the chance, he went after Smith.
Seriously, I wonder if he tapped MM for info on Smith.

Last SB loser to win the big one the next season?

The Vikings take some of the amazing out of it, but yeah.

In case you were referring to me and not Patler, I didn't say it's not legit news. Just that it's boring news with little impact, if any, on the Packers. A mediocre QB being traded to a mediocre AFC team for a draft pick doesn't give me quite the sense of arousal it once did, I guess.

Well, this impacts GB as far as the playoff race and seeding, but that's about it. They still gotta play the games, and IIRC the 49ers were lucky injury-wise last year.
I think SF has to trade some of those draft picks. They aren't going to draft 15 new players and expect them to make that team, and they can't stash them all on the PS. I bet the Jets would love to trade Revis for picks, especially if they need cap space. What if TT traded down with SF to get additional picks? There's supposed to be good DL and OL depth in this draft.
I think Alex Smith is better than Matt Cassel, but not by a lot. KC's OL and skill players aren't as good as SF's, but KC should win a few more games this year.
Teams overpay for QBs and this is no different.
I'd be happy with this deal if I were a SF fan, somewhat less so for KC, but this year's QB draft class sounds bad.

Andy Reid is a fat moron. If Smith was a top 12 starter in this league I could see giving up 2 2nd round picks, I could see one, but two? They could have drafted two decent offensive linemen in the second round and actually put together a respectable front line. Smith isn't Mobil enough, or good enough in the pocket to play in front of a poor line.

The sort of interesting thing to me is that this leaves SF without a "quality" backup, at least as far as I can tell. I wonder if their fans will be wailing about "what happens when Kaepernick goes down".
I'm familiar with that feeling.

thats a lot to give up for a bust
he's never thrown for more than 18 td's in a season. he's not a qb that is gonna win you games, he's a JAG imo
2 stupid qb moves in a row for KC, new people in change, same shitty moves

I wonder if the "similar pick next year" is contingent on playing time, performance etc. Lots of times those end up being 7th round picks, or nothing at all, even when at the time of the deal it is made to sound like a high round certainty..

Might be. But Reid might be the one guy who could salvage it. His track record in QB trades is pretty favorable (see Cardinals and Dolphins). Though, to be fair, he is usually selling the beater.

Friend, your white beard sweeps the ground.
Why do you stand, expectant?
Do you hope to see it;
In one of your withered days?
With your old eyes
Do you hope to see
The triumphal march of Justice?
Do not wait, friend!
Take your white beard
And your old eyes
To more tender lands.

There is that aspect. Likely they are going to have to draft a QB that ran a similar offense in college. Kap runs one of those read options and gets creamed and sprains a knee, you can't have the backup coming in to run a completely different offense. There's not a FA QB that can come in and run that type of offense so I'd expect the backup would have to be a rookie.

If "similar" means another second, then hasn't KC now spent 4 second round picks on someone else's leftovers, between Cassell and Smith?
