The extension is 5 years and north of $13 mil per year according to Glazer, $66 million as reported elsewhere.

He is getting $4.75 mil for 2013. His average for the total deal is $11.8 million.

Any specifics on the number? Ah, I see. Well, let's pray and cross our fingers he does not get hurt. That's a lot of money and a lot of expectations.

Lol. I was thinking about that. Despite his hamstrings, though, his availability has been pretty good.

So this deal keeps him in GB through the 2018 season, when he will be 32. His father and uncle both played until they were 40. I wonder if the good family genes will give him another 8 seasons after 2018.

Aaron and CLAY have come together and as a support for their teammates will purchase for each of them 'personally inscribed':

Demovsky has the numbers on his contract. From his Twitter feed:

Interesting to note in the Matthews deal, the only money technically guaranteed is the $20.5 million signing bonus.

Suggests his base pay this year was lowered to minimum and he will get something along the lines of 5-6 million in salary next year. Then the $3.4 mil per year cap charge and the large base salaries should start to show.

From Demovsky's blog post: http://www.packersnews.com/article/20130418/PKR0101/130418024/Matthews-signing-bonus-20-5-million

- Only truly guaranteed money is bonus at 20.5 mil
- $5 million roster bonus due in 2014 is likely to be paid, as is entire 2nd year package of salary and bonuses of $2 mill
- This year base is $1 mil plus $500K workout bonus
- 2 year haul of 29.02 mil dollars

2013 cap number is $6.7 million
2014 cap number goes up to $11.1 mil

We shouldn't spend any money unless it's another team's free agent.

Just imagine if we signed him Team X as a UFA for $13 mil a year. We'd be so fuckin excited.

Remember, this is a guy from Socal that didn't even know where GB was. We thought for sure he'd do his time and be on his way ...

So this is good for the Pack, right?

I'm, obviously, a cap-dummy.

Its good in the short term yes. But its expensive in cap terms in 2016 and esp. 2017. Off a first glance you could dump him after 2016 and not hurt the cap too much.

This is solid CAP work and it being Clay Matthews. That is if his hammy doesn't get really bad.

There's just two years there. What's the projection of 'serious adversity and this player' and 'dead money'?

RashanGary

Well, in comparison, Greg Jennings got 9M/year on a 5 year deal. Matthews got 11.5/year on a 6 year deal. When you look at the Packers limited budget, and the player they chose to keep, I think they made the right choice.
