Regardless of reading material, I say House and Shields. Tramon takes a large haircut. Its not T2's style, but it seems the more likely outcome.

Article predicts Tramontana and House. Here is the latest Tramon update from JSO:

Tramontana's trainer says the players full range of motion has returned. Its an open question at his age of 30 whether it was simply an injury hiccup (which seemed certain in 2011) or diminishing ability (which sounded more likely in 2012). Its likely his faults were magnified by facing the #1 guy week in and week out.

And his decline might be overstated by some metrics. PFF had him at a 74 QB rating which was 10th of 39 CBs it measured (75% of D snaps cutoff). Football Outsiders had him down for a year improved over 2011, but still average at best. Of course, the link I want for this info is nowhere to be found.

BTW, Sam Shields improved tackling, which at times looked slightly comical, still netted him the 8th worst YAC CB at 5.3 yards after catch.

So you've given up on Jarrett Bush?

Seriously, with Woodson gone, could Tramon take his spot at Safety? He knows the defense and says he wants to be a leader of the secondary. And there is no clear choice to take Woodson's spot. His ballhawking ability might compensate for any tackling deficiency.

Tramon's tackling has been an issue since his shoulder injury. I think it would be even more of an issue if he were moved to Safety. A Safety has to be able to tackle, no matter how much of a ballhawk he is.

Williams & Shields are my bets. Hayward slot. House needs a year of actual game experience before coaches trust him enough to start him (which will be 2014, he will start with Shields)

I agree with Max... House and Shields.

Since our defense as a whole tends to be a mass of confusion - just scrap the Woodson/rover role, and play more straight up. Sure as hell fire isn't fooling any QB's, the only people being fooled are in our own secondary.

Really can't go wrong with any of them.

If Tramon is not a starter then I will be one very happy happy fan. NOt because we have a 12 million player on the bench, but that sheilds and haywood are that good. TWill is very good, so to have very good on the bench means we have great on teh field!

Williams and House will start.

I agree with this. Toward the end of the year, I think Shields had the Packers painted into a man-defense. I think Capers likes to mix zone with man more than he's been able to with Shields. House seems to be a more natural zone player, a better tackler and still able to play man defense as well. Tramon, I have a feeling, is due for a nice season. It will be competitive though. Shields has proven to be a hell of a one-trick pony. I hate to keep doubting him. He keeps proving me wrong.
