Wednesday Practice, 8-7-13

Neal is back. Abdomen must be OK.

Lacy is out, no pads. Joke on Twitter that he must have gained 44 pounds overnight. Better joke is that he made himself sick losing 44 pounds overnight last week.

Datone Jones is over his illness and is back.

Cobb is back

Wes Hodkiewicz ‏@WesHod 1h
#Packers out: Dorsey, Johnson, Harris, Lacy, Richardson, Hayward, Tramon, Tretter, Bulaga, Sherrod, Quarless, Taylor, Nelson, Worthy

ITS SHRINKING!

Tyler Dunne ‏@TyDunne 1h
On the bright side for Green Bay at RB, Alex Green (knee) has returned after sitting out one practice. Harris/Lacy both out.

YESTERDAY, M3 SAID GREEN'S KNEE WAS JUST BOTHERING HIM, SOMETHING HE MIGHT CONTINUE TO HAVE TO DEAL WITH AFTER KNEE INJURY

Pete Dougherty ‏@PeteDougherty 1h
Green back also, n Jolly practicing after dropping out late yesterday with leg cramps

JOLLY BACK BUT BOB HAD SOME POOR REVIEWS FOR HIS LATEST PERFORMANCES: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/packers-camp-report-tuesday-at-a-glance-b9969767z1-218629671.html

Tyler Dunne ‏@TyDunne 1h
Work against the read option continues. Has been an emphasis all training camp. Coaches drilling assignments into players' heads.

WELL AT LEAST CAPERS ISN'T DEFIANT. INCOMPETENT MIGHT STILL BE ON THE BOARD, BUT YOU CAN'T FAULT THE FOCUS

Vince Young starting to get reps in offense only drills.

PROGRESS. HE PRACTICES!

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 1h
Cobb is practicing without a brace or anything I can see. He is wearing long sleeves so I'm not sure if there is anything under that.
Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 1h
He's swinging and flexing his arm like its still bothering him a little.

SPOON IS LIKE THE SMALL RAIN CLOUD THAT FOLLOWS YOU AROUND SOME DAYS

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 1h
So I've got a total of 14 guys out, six of whom are on PUP.

I HESITATE TO CALL THIS AN IMPROVEMENT

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 1h
Interesting: Mike Neal is working with the OLBs, not the D-line.

THAT IS A BIG OLB

Can anyone decipher this from Bob?

Jermichael Finley capped off his second practice of camp by latching onto a medium-range TD pass from Aaron Rodgers.

OK, THOSE RETURNERS ARE THERE AS SCOUT TEAM TO #1 COVERAGE UNIT

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 51m
Tim Masthay showing a nice leg on kickoffs. Had some wind at his back. Definitely stronger than Tavecchio.

I HOPE THIS DOES NOT AFFECT THE PUNTING

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 51m

There's the downside with Masthay, erratic. Muffs kickoff for 2.1 second hang and ball falls to 15

HOF ON HOLD

Mike Vandermause ‏@MikeVandermause 49m
Tavecchio puts 2nd kick about 5 yards deep. Crosby wins Round 2.

I WOULD PAY GOOD MONEY FOR A STRAIGHT ANSWER AT KICKER

ProFootballTalk ‏@ProFootballTalk 46m
Second opinion is back on Packers LT Bryan Bulaga: He'll have surgery to repair a torn ACL once the swelling goes down, per league source.

IF YOU ARE PATRICK MCKENZIE, DO YOU CELEBRATE, JUST A LITTLE, JUST TO YOURSELF WHEN 2ND OPINION AGREES WITH YOU?

Mike Vandermause ‏@MikeVandermause 44m
Haven't ever heard Starks called Jim before, but that's how Rodgers just addressed him during fundamental drill.

TOMORROW ON FIRST TAKE, RODGERS BULLIES RBs

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 38m

Scrums/punches all over the place. Wow. Van Roten and Francois at it. Finley throws punch at Jarvis Reed. Sitton/Greene even talking.

TWENTY TWEETS ON FIGHTS BETWEEN PEOPLE WITH HELMETS ON. OTHER WORDS, NO NEWS. AT LEAST FINLEY IS SMART ENOUGH TO PICK ON SOMEONE HIS OWN SIZE

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 35m
And then Finley throws a bolo at someone who threw a punch at him. Jolly comes over and shoulder blocks Finley. Quite a melee.

MONEY IS ON JOLLY NOW

Wes Hodkiewicz ‏@WesHod 35m
Kevin Greene and Josh Sitton even jawing back and forth

REALLY LIKE HAVING KEVIN AND JOSH AROUND

DIDN'T HE DO THIS YESTERDAY TOO?

Tyler Dunne ‏@TyDunne 30m
Sam Shields beat deep by Omarius Hines but wideout can't haul it in.
Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 30m

Would like to see him tried in the middle - with Capers as our DC though, we know he prefers ILB's to be as invisible as possible.

Savage is a guy I want to know more about - if any of you rail birds has any updates.
No updates from camp, but these are his workout #'s from New Mexico State's Pro Day in late March:
6'1, 247 pounds
40 time: 4.80
Bench press: 20 reps at 225 pounds
Vertical: 32.5"
Broad Jump: 9'6"

Savage played in all 12 of the Aggies' games in 2012, posting three sacks, seven tackles for loss, and two blocked kicks while playing defensive end. He sat out the 2011 season (I've read conflicting reports of medical redshirt and academic ineligibility) but in his junior year of 2010 he posted another three sacks to go along with two forced fumbles. In his sophomore year of 2009, he put up six sacks, two forced fumbles, and a blocked punt.
GB is a little thin at OLB and he was a DE, so I could see him fighting Mulumba for a spot as a backup/ST player.

MCCARTHY PC 8-7-13

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 50m
Lacy out today with hamstring. No information to be concerned about long term. Had been bothering him.

Tyler Dunne ‏@TyDunne 49m
MM: Eddie Lacy missed practice with a hamstring injury. Alex Green feeling good, missed Tuesday due to swelling in the knee.

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 49m
Green looked good after missing yesterday with knee, MM said. Neal passed physical and did work in individual drills. Went 2-2 in 1-on1's.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 49m
MM: Mike Neal is working at some specialty stuff at OLB, but he's a defensive linemen.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 49m
Mike McCarthy; Bryan Bulaga has decided to have surgery on his knee.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 49m
MM: Bulaga will be lost for the season as expected.

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 48m
MM on Young: "He knows how to play quarterback, he knows how to win." Hard part is learning verbiage.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 46m
MM: Greg Van Roten needed to pick it up in the spring and start of camp, but he's really picked it up the last couple of days.

Tyler Dunne ‏@TyDunne 46m
MM on young WRs: Getting a lot of reps. See cohesiveness whole group has with the QB. Been impressed with every one of them.

Tyler Dunne ‏@TyDunne 45m
MM: Graham Harrell has had a steady camp. ...Practice, been ups and downs. Clearly has taken a big step forward.

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 45m
Starks, Green responded well to addition of new backs. Top to bottom, competition never been so good.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 45m
MM: Johnathan Franklin is steady. Did some good things in the scrimmage. He'll continue to learn and get comfortable. He's very consiste...

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 45m
MM said has talked about scrimmaging another team "but it doesn't work for us" based on his training camp plan

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 45m
Is it fair to Barclay to not line up RT every snap? No, but it's best for team, MM says.

Yeah, I saw his pro-day workout... I liked what I saw of him - but a guy running around in shorts does not a football player make.

Still, I liked what I saw, so I'm anxious to see if he is a guy who stick and progress.

A couple of positive mentions, only one bad one I remember (scrub O line stopped his pass rush twice).

He has one of the winning records in 1 on 1 pass rush. But not too many wow plays. In camp, some players don't get attention for just doing job. Matthews doesn't get many mentions either, though Wilde hasn't dinged him either.

If true and Perry is just doing his job, that should be a huge boost to the D. We already have evidence that he can lay the wood in a game. If he can handle the rest of the gig competently, that'll be a big step to eliminating the Keystone Kops D.

Mike Vandermause ‏@MikeVandermause 2m
MM: Today was review day, first time in helmets. Didn't start way it needed to, but last 2 team periods were outstanding.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 1m
MM: Andrew Datko has a concussion. Lane Taylor had a personal issue.

Mike Vandermause ‏@MikeVandermause 52m
MM: Bakhtiari played well, will definitely grow from this experience.

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 51m
Barclay "was clearly one of the top performers of the game for us." (That's big-time statement there)

Mike Vandermause ‏@MikeVandermause 52m
MM: Didn't grade out well as offense, but Barclay was one of bright spots.

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 52m
More on Barclay: Flexibiility, assignment-sound, won majority of reps, finishes his blocks.

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 52m
MM on Tyrone Walker "He's another one I would say was one of our top performers. .... been doing it all camp. Very instinctive, athletic."

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 50m
MM on the running game: Attempts were there. Wasn't clean. Some good combination blocks and finishes up front. But some missed blocks.

Mike Vandermause ‏@MikeVandermause 50m
MM: Was very pleased with what T.J. Lang gave us last night. Will be smart with him this week. Thought he was solid.

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 50m
MM thought No. 1 offense as a whole played well on their one and only series.

Mike Vandermause ‏@MikeVandermause 50m
MM: Secondary was OK, there were some winners and guys that didn't win. Coverage wasn't as tight as it needed to be in certain spots.

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 50m
Big negative on defense was "adversity defense" with two touchdown by AZ off of two giveaways.

Mike Vandermause ‏@MikeVandermause 50m
MM: Starks had ball over goal line, Ref said he couldn't see his knee.

Packer Report ‏@PackerReport 49m
MM said House has practiced very well but "obviously you'd like to see him play better." ... Got to respond and keep playing. Short memory.

Barclay Making Push to Start (http://www.packers.com/news-and-events/article-1/Packers%E2%80%99-Don-Barclay-making-push-to-start-again/b74f901a-684b-4b13-bc67-f2ccd8290468)

GREEN BAY—Offensive lineman Don Barclay ended his rookie season last year in the Packers’ starting lineup, and he’s pushing to get back there in year two.

After an otherwise rough night for the offense in getting blanked by Arizona, Mike McCarthy on Saturday singled out Barclay for his solid performance at right tackle. Barclay alternated series at that spot with Marshall Newhouse into the third quarter of Friday’s game in an ongoing competition for the starting role.

“I thought Barclay was clearly one of the top performers of the game for us,” McCarthy said. “When we went through the grading, we didn’t grade out very well as a football team. We graded out poorly as an offense, but I thought Don Barclay’s performance was clearly one of the brighter spots in last night’s game.”

McCarthy didn’t specifically address Newhouse’s play, but the fourth-year pro was cleanly beaten around the edge by defensive end John Abraham in the second quarter, leading to a sack and fumble by quarterback Graham Harrell

Sounds like Newhouse might be headed for the backup T spot.

Thought this was interesting... from the Barancyzk column (http://www.packersnews.com/article/20130810/PKR07/308100365/Eric-Baranczyk-analysis-Offensive-line-holding-back-running-game)

Also, outside linebacker Nick Perry is a huge asset in the run game, there were times he caved in that side of the line.

I have broken McCarthy's code on injuries.

This took one year longer than Holmgren, who referred to all soft, connective tissue injuries as "tweaks" no matter the degree of tear. You could guesstimate the length of recovery by the tone of the answer. If angry with question, he would be back in 1-2 days, if perturbed with question but answers at length, its 1-4 weeks. If he answers like you have just asked him about his lovely daughters, the player's season was in jeopardy.

McCarthy is just too honest to be completely baffling, but has learned to couch his answer. Speaking of Derek Sherrod today he said:

Tyler Dunne ‏@TyDunne 1h
McCarthy on Jones: Will miss a couple days this week. Hoping he'll be ready for St. Louis.

When he mentions a time frame, its a minimum for being given back a helmet. If he has a second benchmark, its the absolute peak of optimism for participation and under ordinary conditions, you should consider the player as OUT until after that event.

M3 is in favor of hope and considers it a good thing. But its disappointed him before and he figures you should learn that lesson too.

In other news, DaJuan Harris is off PUP. Sean Richardson is still weeks away yet.

Some good news on the injury front, for once:

DE Datone Jones (ankle) is expected to miss a few days. He's questionable for the St. Louis game.

Returning to practice were RB DuJuan Harris and WR Randall Cobb. DE-LB Mike Neal participated in team drills for the first time.

T Derek Sherrod progressed enough to perform some individual drills Monday with position coach James Campen.

This 24 hour media coverage has led us to get excited that Sherrod is now doing individual drills with Campen.

As MM put it, Sherrod is a victim of his injury classification.

The doctors hold all the power, is how it's kind of presented.

So maybe Belichek will start bribing other teams' doctors to keep guys out for longer periods, especially if they're playing the Pats soon.

THUMBS DOWN

WR Jeremy Ross is another talented player. Some players, however, always seem to be around bad plays when they occur. Ross must prove he isn't one of them. On Monday, he was running an inside-breaking route in the end zone for the No. 1 offense when Aaron Rodgers had his pass to Ross intercepted by CB James Nixon on a bang-bang-play. It was a tremendous pick, no doubt, but Ross allowed the cornerback to beat him across his face. He didn't position himself to make the catch or at least fight for the ball so neither would gain possession. In the intrasquad scrimmage, Ross slipped on an out cut that Nixon returned 65 yards for a TD. Minus the slip, Ross said he would have made the catch or it wouldn't have been caught at all. Against Arizona, one reason for Graham Harrell's ill-advised interception was Ross's poor release against CB Patrick Peterson. Of course, no one has forgotten his fumbled punt return at Candlestick Park in the playoffs.

He's kind of the opposite of Boykin and Walker at this point. Its rare that Thompson and McCarthy have kept a pure return man. He needs to step it up.

Boykin didn't impress in the preseason opener either. And Franklin was mighty shaky fielding at least on punt I saw. So Ross fumbled in a critical playoff game, changing the entire momentum of the contest - no one will hold that against him for 3-4 decades, will they?

I thought Boykin had one catch that I saw, but it was late and Walker, Hines and someone else seemed to make more plays.

I think Ross is going to have to be an all around Special Teams demon to make it if there are other WR candidates better than him.

Does Bakhtiari get unusually low in that pass blocking drill? It looks to me like a tall DE could get good leverage by pushing down on his shoulder pads.

What about his foot placement when he's in his stance? He seems to consistently go into his stance with his left foot quite far back, whereas Sitton who's next to him in this video goes into more of a straight crouch. Is it common for tackles to line up like this, maybe to give them better positioning against someone trying to go wide? I like these short video, I can let it loop through a few times, picking something to concentrate on. I don't know a whole lot about OL play, maybe this is normal and I've just never noticed before.

I know that Bryant McKinnie used to play LT for Minnesota and you could tell based on his left leg whether the playcall was run or pass. If it was a run play, he'd be in a straight crouch. If it was a passing play, he'd have the left leg off the line a bit.

In the Persian's case, I don't think it truly matters unless people are noticing things like that.

That stance makes sense for a smaller guy daring someone to try and go around him. He positions himself to make it tough to go inside, but inviting to go around....but the little guy is quick enough to ride him up the field as he tries to turn the corner.

At least that is how I did it.

Per MM, Datone Jones turned his ankle, the same one he hurt two weeks ago. So either you keep 'em out forever and they never progress (Sherrod, Quarless) or you put 'em back on the field and they immediately get re-injured. For whatever reason the Packers under TT and MM are cursed with injuries. When did the curse first appear? Was it Justin Harrell? Terrence Murphy? The curse needs a name.

In other news, JSO reports that MM says that Andy Mulumba's knee "just blew up in meetings". Hopefully that is just a figure of speech, not a comparison between Mulumba and Dustin Keller. If it is a comparison, that is probably good news for someone like Sam Barrington.

Better left unsolved.

This is getting even more ridiculous. If it turns out he's gone for any length of time, then I'm going to cry myself to sleep tonight after drinking a bottle of wine.

Sounds like MM is thinking of using preseason game #3 to evaluate personnel - that is, instead of this being the big "tune up" game with the regulars, as it usually is, it sounds like he wants to throw a bunch of guys in there to evaluate, maybe use game #4 of the preseason to get the machine oiled.

he needs to see guys like Charles Johnson, Quarless, House, even Crosby.

I would say Friday night's game is Crosby's Last Stand. He's got to be perfect or he's gone.

I think Detroit is gonna release this "kickalicious" dude...can he be any more of an adventure than Crosby was last year?

The reason Carpenter isn't still in Miami is probably that he missed 2 games each of the past 2 years. A kicker missing games is a big deal since teams seldom keep 2 kickers. I'd prefer Feeley who has shown he can kick effectively in cold weather. Don't know if Carpenter has done that much since he played for Miami.

This is one of those problems that always makes me wonder: We have a nation of 300+ million people and 7 billion in the world. You would think among that population, it ought to be possible to get a guy who can kick a ball through the uprights reliably.

Oh, I don't know. It seems like some teams are getting hit pretty good. NYG lost Stevie Brown and have issues all over the place, Will Smith went on IR in NO, Stephen Gilmore is out 6-8 weeks for BUF -- who don't seem to have a starter quality QB with Manuel and Kolb hurt (and signing Tuel and Leinart to play). NYJ have a mess at QB with Sanchez and Geno Smith both nursieng injuries and trying to outdo each other in the bad decision-making department. Henry Melton's been out for most of the preseason for CHI after signing a franchise tender, MIN has players hurt (Chris Cook, Kevin Williams, Shariff Floyd) and Ponder is still playing inconsistent...DET has been somewhat healthy, which means either the injury bug will bite them later when the games count or they will have one of those freak seasons of health and win the division.

The injury situation is not good for GB, but it's not an outlier. I'd feel a lot better if the WR's and CB's could get/stay healthy, but I'll optimistically say TT has helped to build better team depth than a lot of teams out there.

PB,

I've read that Shields has made some pretty big progress as far as his ability to play different types of coverage. I doubt he'll ever be the natural, instinctive zone player that Hayward or Hyde are, but if he's good enough mix it in, that's enough for me. I just think it will help our cause of we're not totally predictable with the coverages we call, especially against running QBs.

I keep hoping we're going to get healthy for the first game, but it keeps looking like it's less and less likely.

On the bright side, Mike Daniels looks quick and strong. CJ Wilson is playing the best football I've ever seen him play. Jolly can give us quality snaps inside. Pickett is healthy and in good shape and Raji had some plays where he just looked like a bull. Plus Datone Jones and Mike Neal should give us a little something. . . . Our DL looks good. It would be great to be able to have a fresh, strong DL against a team like SF. It will go a long way toward slowing down their run game. . .

The easy cop-out answer is they never found a decent long term solution at QB after Jim Kelly. The Rob Johnson/Doug Flutie era bled into...what...J.P. Losman? Yuck. Looking at their QB's over the last 2 decades makes me feel very very lucky as a GB fan. Somewhere Ryan Fitzpatrick is probably laughing at Buddy Nix for cutting him.

The nice thing about Starks and Green is both of them know the offense. You can keep the whole playbook open. Keeping two players based on that, seems ridiculous. There is just too much of a premium on making plays in the NFL and too much of a premium on competent big guys. No way.

damn, the guy MM had pegged as the starter, even if many felt he was blowing smoke.

Not a big deal. I smell that Starks or Green will rise to the occasion. HArris was not Barry Sanders, despite the slight resemblance.

+1

Losing Harris is bad news, but it buys the team more time to sort out the RBs.
They have room to keep all 4...and given the injury histories, should keep all 4. I don't trust any of them to be healthy enough to handle more than 180 carries a season. By mid-season they will know if Green or Starks are worth keeping, and what they have with Franklin.

If reports are to be believed, Starks started out TC like gangbusters but ended up in the doghouse after the STL game. I think they'll feed him vs. KC and he'll respond.

Lacy is clearly the starter. Starks becomes his backup, Green or Kuhn comes in on 3rd downs and Franklin is the apprentice.

My money's on Franklin.
