As mentioned in another thread' Jeremy Maclin tore his ACL.

TE Dennis Pitta out for the year with fractured hip. Ravens have signed Shiancoe.

Giants Safety Will Hill suspended 4 games. He says it's for marijuana use.

Wish I had some bad news to report on Vikings and Bears. Have to be patient.

Cutler is reportedly saying that not everyone is buying into Trestman's system. Division will be much tougher. Detroit will be toughest competition. If they could focus on field and avoid the off field police blotter issues, they could give the Pack a very tough test to win division.

WR Brandon Marshall - still rehabbing from hip surgery

He's practicing. Currently running with the #2 defense.

Ponder is his usual inconsistent self. Jennings supposedly is tearing up the defense on short routes and bubble screens.

Eagles say they won't tackle in camp. Trading better simulation of game conditions for better health. This should prove an interesting experiment. If the Eagles defense does well, look for other teams to follow their lead.

If nothing else they should be well prepared for the lack of contact allowed on QB's these days.

Other news Seattle is having health problems with another ex-Viking receiver.

Albert Breer, whom I normally like, mentioned that Percy Harvin was a luxury signing for the Seahawks, he wasn't necessary.

So which is dumber, $25 million guaranteed to a luxury or Breer?

It's the difference between having a starting quarterback who costs $2.1 million through 2015 (http://www.rotoworld.com/teams/contracts/nfl/sea/)and a starting quarterback who costs $130 million through 2019. Their most expensive defensive player costs $35 through 2016. Ours is $70 million through 2018 (http://www.rotoworld.com/teams/contracts/nfl/gb/packers).

You can take more stupid risks when you have key players drafted in the new CBA. Heck, I don't know what we'd do if we had to pay our corners market value.

Happily, outside of one year, the Pack was not saddled with top of the draft contracts from that stupid era. The big contracts you talk about are a third and second contract, when the players got their value. The Pack could probably afford to splurge on a player if they thought they saw someone worth it. The teams that are hurting are the Cleveland and Detroit's of the league, who may have some good players, but never had a period of time where they were outplaying their contracts.

That's true. On the other hand, with its longing for parity the NFL has rewarded lousy teams with its draft system, and I would argue they try to tilt the scale even more by tending to award lousy teams (plus the Dallas Cowboys) better compensatory picks.

So I'm okay that sucky teams had to suffer for their suckiness.

As to the Lions' training camp, they are all pretty healthy and the team is optimistic. If you're looking for a GM to contrast with Thompson, it might be the Lions' GM, Martin Mayhew. He saw holes at RB, DE, kicker, and safety, and filled them all with free agents - Reggie Bush, Idonaje (sp?), David Akers, and Quin Glover. He's still looking for more veteran help in the defensive trenches. One of his starting LB's is a free agent acquisition, as is his #2 receiver.

So we'll see how that all plays out. The Lions are feeling good about themselves right now.

On the other hand, the Lions' future salary cap looks a mess. Stafford, Calvin Johnson, and Suh all have mega contracts that don't necessarily look like Ted Thompson pay-as-you-go contracts. So we'll see if this short-term attempt to win gets it done for Mayhew and The Schvantz.

http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130731/SPORTS0101/307310085

So again, I would posit that people who don't like Ted's youth-oriented, contract-conscious, slow-moving style ought to keep an eye on the Lions this year as they seem to be the polar opposite (a nod to old poster Tank there). They've filled lots of holes with veteran free agents, pushed the future sal cap to its very limits, and seem committed to keeping vets over raw rooks.

We'll see how it plays out, this year, and in the next five, too.

Agree...the Lions aren't pushovers. If the Packers can actually have a respectable running game this year then they can play ball control and wear out that defense. By the 4Q they might not be so excited to see Eddie Lacy, who I can just picture playing for that Turkey Leg award John Madden gives out.

Either way, if the Lions are mortgaging their future it's quite a gamble...I could see them having a bounce back year and pushing for a playoff spot, but IMO there are too many other strong contenders in the NFC.

Jaamal charles just got carted off the field in KC

They are dismissing the injury as a strained foot. What can strain except the arch? And that injury would be a bitch for a running back.

Are other ligaments strained? Toes? Good luck with that. I wish I knew a Kansas City fan for taunting purposes.

Yes, but then they say it's nothing serious and he'll be back in a day. I was always annoyed by those guys in high school that rolled around in agony with trainers and coaches kneeling over them and then they were back in on the next series.

Maybe he was just punching out early. It's not above NFL players to fake it if the situation calls for it.

Bishop trying to get on field, should play this weekend:

His absence from last Friday’s preseason opener was because of a groin pull he suffered a week earlier, another injury obstacle at an inopportune time. No wonder Bishop’s anxiety has elevated as a critical stretch arrives.

On the field, Bishop has shown his experience, his energy and what Frazier calls “a cleverness” to be active in plays. There are few doubts that, at full strength, Bishop can be a run stopper and adept against the pass.

During Monday’s practice, he worked as the weakside linebacker with the second-unit defense. Marvin Mitchell remains the starter on the weakside. And Tyrone McKenzie is in the mix as well, his value enhanced by his role as a core special teamer.

About 1998 there was still a rotary dial phone backstage of a theater we were using for a community play. A girl of about 12 needed to use the phone and was directed to its whereabouts. I'll never forget the mystified, bewildered look on her face as she re-appeared--stymied by wheel holes where the buttons should have been. She had a kind of "You have got to be kidding me!" look on her face as we described how fingers go into the numbered holes and spin up to the stop before letting it go to spin back and then do the next number. Sounds weird if you have to explain it.

Hated dialing them (especially if you had a 9 in the number you had to dial) but loved the sound and the handsets were vastly superior to anything today.

Is that what happened? Where did you see that? I haven't seen anything other than him saying that the test wasn't positive, and I don't think he's the most reliable source of information. I love his other story, quote, "The crazy thing is, I haven’t heard anything from the NFL" then later the same day we find out the suspension went through, meaning he already had his appeal. Personally, I consider attending an appeal hearing to fall in the category of 'hearing from the league"

According to multiple sources and reported by multiple outlets, Miller was flagged in the testing process for a diluted sample, and the NFL announced that he would be suspended as a result. Miller had already tested positive for marijuana and amphetamines in 2011, and there was some discussion as to whether Miller would appeal the testing process leading to that result. He met last Thursday to decide whether to appeal his current suspension, and decided not to at that time.

A few things on Von Miller's background, from club scouting reports ... So you can have a more accurate picture on the kid.

Albert Breer ‏@AlbertBreer 12m
1) Miller was known at A&M to be a guy who grew up as he went along, so sometimes he'd have to learn the hard way. Not unusual stuff.

Albert Breer ‏@AlbertBreer 12m
2) Miller didn't fail any drug tests at A&M, but did serve a suspension for an academic reason. Again, more immaturity than anything else.

Albert Breer ‏@AlbertBreer 10m
3) Only things Miller had on his record were speeding tickets that led to a license suspension, and admission he smoked a little pot in HS.

Albert Breer ‏@AlbertBreer 10m
4) All the problems Miller had coming in were considered very manageable. College kid-type things. Needed to grow up a little, that's all.

Tony Moeaki breaks his shoulder
Stephen Gilmore out 6-8 weeks
Kevin Kolb's career done (concussions)?
Will Smith (the NO player, not the MIB guy) put on IR
The NFL has suspended Minnesota Vikings fullback Jerome Felton for three games without pay for violating the NFL substance-abuse policy. Adrian Peterson's job just got tougher without his lead blocker.
Chargers put Melvin Ingram on reserve PUP
SEA puts Jesse Williams (who I really liked pre-draft, before all the news about him having chronically bad knees leaked) on IR.

I expect many players to go on IR with cuts looming.

You have to wonder, especially with Felton out, if it will have any impact on him and his timing the first few games. I'd think nothing could simulate the actual speed and hitting of a game, and Peterson is more or less missing that. I'm probably overvaluing a fullback's lead blocking, but IIRC Peterson was statistically better with him by a lot.

I suppose if he's skipped preseason games before it's not a big deal, but I can't imagine him getting 2500 this year without his Pro Bowl blocker, combined with Ponder not showing he's made a big jump from last year. Some of the pundits have the Vikes out and the Saints back in the playoffs this year. Seems like a reasonable prediction to me...Brees and that offense are pretty good, and they get Sean Payton back.

I find it interesting that MIN considers themselves close to GB (the thinking goes like this: you have Rodgers, we have Peterson). I think MIN's roster has talent, but isn't as good or deep as GB's, and they don't have an answer at the QB position. I also thought they were kind of streaky/fluky last year and had some very good fortune with staying healthy and a historic bounceback from AP...I think they are due for a regression to the mean.
(Digression: Desmond Bishop led them with 9 Tkl against SF in preseason game 3, supposedly playing well -- i.e., solid tackling and run D -- but had obvious limitations in coverage.)

Now here's a real change of pace RB ... OR put this guy in the same backfield with Lacy and you've got version two of John Brockington and MacArthur Lane.

From Rotoworld

The New York Daily News reports the Giants are "very unlikely" to re-sign free agent Brandon Jacobs.
It's a logical connection because Jacobs has played for the Giants in the past, but illogical from the standpoint that he's never been a third-down back type. The Giants are searching for help in pass protection after losing Andre Brown to a left-leg fracture. Tim Hightower would make a lot more sense.
