View Full Version : New Pro Bowl rules - gimick or the future of the nfl?

Not counting the fantasy football player draft for the Pro Bowl the following rule changes are being made:

Game within the Game – A two-minute warning will be added to the first and third quarters and the ball will change hands after each quarter. This will increase the opportunities for quarterbacks to direct “two-minute drills,” which are especially exciting for fans.

No Kickoffs – The coin toss will determine which team is awarded possession first. The ball will be placed on the 25-yard line at the start of each quarter and after scoring plays.

Rosters – The rosters will continue to consist of 43 players per squad. The kick return specialist will be replaced by an additional defensive back.

Cover Two and Press Coverage – The defense will be permitted to play “cover two” and “press” coverage. In previous years, only “man” coverage was permitted, except for goal line situations.

Stopping of the Game Clock – Beginning at the two-minute mark of every quarter, if the offense does not gain at least one yard, the clock will stop as if the play were an incomplete pass. This rule will make the team with the ball attempt to gain yardage toward the end of each quarter.

Game Timing – The game clock will start after an incomplete pass on the signal of the referee, except inside the last two minutes of the first half and the last five minutes of the second half.

Play Clock – A 35-second/25-second play clock will be adopted instead of the typical 40-second/25-second clock.

Sacks – The game clock will not stop on quarterback sacks outside of the final two minutes of the game. Currently, the game clock stops in these situations outside of two minutes of the second and fourth quarters.

Other than the rosters and the pass coverage rules, I could see any or all of the others added to the regular rules. Even if they are not adopted, I could see the Pro Bowl becoming a place to preview some proposed rule changes. That at least would be a legitimate way to make the game relevant.

I think you're right. I think we're seeing the future of the NFL.

Fans just don't love defense the way they used to. Sigh.

Hell, that being the case, everyone should just go watch the Lynn Dickey-led Packers beat the Redskins back in the day on I think Monday night football, 50-something to 40-something.

Lack of kickoff being of course the most interesting, and one of the ones the NFL would most like to head towards.

Not sure I get the thinking behind not stopping the clock on a sack. But then, why should they, treat it like a rushing attempt...

I think the clock stopping on a sack was not written correctly. I think it just means that the stopping will only happen the last two minutes of the game, and not the last two minutes of the second quarter.

The kickoff thing might have the biggest impact on rosters. It seems like the 'no victory formation' in part offsets the lack of an onside kick attempt. I wonder if that rule will wipe out the injury improvements from the lack of a kickoff.

There is also going to be a draft rather than conference teams. Deion and Jerry Rice are choosing in the blurb I read.

I was going to write "what a joke," especially the part about former players picking the teams. It only points to the continued celebrity-driven nature of the new NFL.

But the pro bowl was already a joke.

If they put a fan in charge of the draft and had him advised by an NFL GM, I would tune in to see the car wreck.

"Hey, its a Pro Bowl team of Cowboys plus Adrian Peterson!"
