Team announces that he will retire as a Packer.

Really?

Do we have to let him do that?

Alert Applebee's about this.

Yup, I say have the announcement AT Applebee's and get him an Applebee's football jersey with his name on it. He was a great kicker when he was here except his last season. Seemed like everyone except himself was the root cause.

BTW, put a ZERO on that jersey to equal the amount of SB titles he won with the Queens!

He played here 9 years, and then 6 with the Viqueens. I'm not sure he really should retire with the Packers. Next thing you know, Greg Jennings will announce he's retiring as a Packer.

#3 with the Vikings http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/min/career-scoring.htm

I wonder of anyone else is that high on the scoring list of 2 different teams.

What are the chances an all-time great Packer would announce his retirement and then decide to come back?

To answer my own question, Morten Andersen is the all time leading scorer for both Falcons and Saints.

Ya, pretty surprised he wants this. I didn't think he missed the place.

So...funny question, I wonder how it works if the team isn't really interested in having a guy back? If Taco Wallace announced he was retiring a Packer?

Anyone know what happened in 1981 that caused Rich Wingo to kick an extra point?

Something must have went bad on a snap. Was listed as a pass from Ray Stachowicz (remember that crappy punter?) to Rich Wingo.

Maybe the team is doing this to show that bygones can be bygones, sort of paving the way for the Brent Favre return.

Otherwise, I don't quite understand it, unless it's just not a big deal to the team. Myself, I thought Longwell was a good but not great kicker, an excuse-making machine who took some shots on the way out the door. Not the kind of guy I would really want to retire as a Packer.

But maybe the team just doesn't care that much. Or maybe it's part of a bigger Favre strategy.

He is the team's all time leader in points. It makes some sense. No reason to hold a grudge against a record holder.

That's always a sticky point in any sport - what if a guy who has a big history for your team/school is an asshat? Are you honoring him for his accomplishments only, or for the kind of person he is? Or is it supposed to be both?

I can see some of this.

Create the precedence.

Bert won't be the first Ex-Packer that weaseled out to the Vikes and said rude shit at the door before leaving, then got an honor from the team anyhow.

I guess he does have to choose between the Packers or Vikings. Its just funny with the way he left and where he left to. If you look at his stats he probably has a point about kicking in domes though.

While he was speaking with reporters today he said he LOVES Applebees'. Evidently he and his wife ate there almost every night and his poor attempt at a joke saying there were no other places he'd rather go to in town came out pretty bad. He also said he realized how special GB was once he was on the other sideline. I will say you could have knocked me over with a feather when I read about his desire to retire a Packer! He isn't the first player to leave and play elsewhere and then want to return and retire as a Packer.

Doh! Of course, in the days before the 2-point conversion!

An interesting line further down in that article:

Ted Thompson LB HOU Oilers NYJ 11/23/1980 Toni Fritsch was injured in warmups.
Thompson went 4 for 4.

All four kicks were in the fourth quarter, too!

Thompson did the kicking off too. That game was a complete aberration for the Earl Campbell-era Oilers: the Snake throws for 388 yards and 4 tds, but also throws 4 picks, including a 6.

Aside: the NFL's lawyers seem to have gotten fat and lazy. I am seeing more and more complete NFL games on youtube these days, including entire seasons for certain teams.

Wow, thanks. Watched it to see the kicks...check out the TD 'dance' at 1:58:20! Great stuff.

He kicks one at 1:59:00. Not exactly textbook form! He kicks off at 2:00:00, does ok, puts it I10 kicking from the 40. Don't think you could ask for much more.

On another note, how do you shut out a team for 3 quarters, then allow them to score 4 times in the other? Can't you get your offense to burn a little time off the clock?

The Jets under Walt Michaels were a weird team. They were supposed to be really good that year but they finished 4-12 and were the only team to lose to the 1-15 Aints. After his punter had a punt blocked, Michaels reportedly reamed him out in front of the team, ending his tirade with "I can fart further than you can punt."

Not sure it's totally about BF. Once Longwell gets back in the fold and gets his name out there, it's a lifetime opportunity to make a living in the state of Wisconsin. Golf outings, banquets, etc. Much more lucrative than as a retired Viking in Minn.

Or maybe it's part of a bigger Favre strategy.

If they can bring Longwell in, then get a retired offensive lineman and a retired defensive end (Tauscher and KGB?), they can fly all three down to escort Brent back to Green Bay. Maybe get Mike Sherman to pick him up at the airport.
