Cobb and Jordy. No snaps in preseason and now they are receivers #1 and #2 and QBs #2 and #3. Packers will sign a QB. Is Hass still available? God knows, the Raiders could release Flynn and go with Vince Young...errr... Terrell Pryor.

I expect to get a big NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO for this one but, dept.

John Skelton will be released by Cincy.

In the Pre, he looked much better than Young, Harrell, or Coleman.

I haven't seen a capable back-up QB in GB this season.

Skelton at least looks like that guy until we could find a better one.

I wish Young well. He seemed like a decent guy in our brief exposure to him. I am worried about the backup QB.

But I love that Thompspn and McCarthy don't settle on names and PR to cover for a hole in the roster. Kudos to them.

But also a Komplaint that its Aug 31 and they don't have the solution on the roster for QB.

Please, just no!!! He's absolutely horrible and would be equally horrible here behind our O line. Vince was the answer but Ted and Mike apparently think Aaron will never get hurt. Sorry but as good as he is he doesn't have Brett's indestructability. Coleman is a bumb. We are officially screwed!!!

Seriously, the backup QB is virtually meaningless to me. The only way it will work and provide meaningful backup is to find a young guy who can be immersed in the system and be a caretaker for a few games. They found that with Flynn, but not with Harrell, and it isn't looking good at this point for Coleman. If Rodgers is lost for an extended time, it won't matter who the backup is.

Interesting question, especially since we brought in Vince Young: Are MM/TT interested in the best available QB, regardless of skillset, or do they prefer one similar to Rogers' talents and our offensive system? How do salary/age/injury concerns play into the decision-making?

are any of the current backups better then randle "wild" cobb?

after watching harrell last night i thought to myself "do we even have to waste a roster spot on a completely worthless player"?

i think it would be scary to have "limp wrist" harrell come into the game and try and continue using the same type of passing game that a-rod uses. i saw him make one pass to the sideline that seemed like it took forever to get out there. those long passes to the sideline have to come out of the playbook when a-rod comes out.

and if we have to change the scheme for a backup QB, why not just throw cobb back there (if he's healthy) and let him run the wild cat or something like it for the rest of the game?

keep a normal QB on the practice squad for running the b-team in practice, and use the roster spot for someone who might contribute to the team

Damn Walker didn't make it. I hear they don't even want Johnson on the PS if he clears waivers.

Johnson meaning the 7th round WR from Illinois State? If they really don't want him around he must've really stunk it up in the short time he was in TC. Or he punched a coach in the face.

Bit weird. Lacy, Starks, Franklin and Kuhn covers all the bases except third down. But that is where McKnight has struggled with health.

Wow, this surprises me. He was highly rated and thought to be a very safe pick with the only downside being his age. A first round pick gone after 2 years, barely saw the field. I assume a few teams will bring him in for a look see, too intriguing not to.

If McKnight is supposed to fill Harris' cleats, McCarthy clearly had "big letter" plans for a 1-2 punch that he doesn't want to scrap, and he thinks McKnight might be able to. I'm skeptical of this guy; he couldn't really stay healthy (strike one) or beat out the other Jets RB's (strike two) with LT and Shonn Greene gone. My homer bias also makes me skeptical he's better than Alex Green, but I've not really seen Green produce much so I'm likely overvaluing him. I'd think Starks is safe as Lacy's backup hammer role; they must think Franklin can work his way into the 3rd down role and take it over from Kuhn.
McKnight can return kicks, not sure about punts. Has very good speed but not sure about his vision or patience as a RB tho.

Eh. Size wasn't the determining factor for him, though it obviously wasn't an advantage. McGinn mentioned in his rookie camp that he was obviously better at blocking than Taylor and occasionally Finley, having had to do traditional in-line blocking in college. So his improvement there was no surprise.

What killed his chances was the inability to bring his practice hands to an actual game.

Agreed, however, I think guys who are smallish really have to make plays to make rosters. I like Harris, but said many times I thought they would cut him, but he made enough plays to be worthy.

TE's need size for 2 reasons, blocking being only one. They also use their bodies to shield out defenders and make big targets. If they are small, JJones does it just as well and is much faster.

Lane Taylor, like Lewis a rookie free agent, took 50 snaps at right guard and the last 14 at left guard. He had four minus plays.

Taylor is even stronger than Lewis but also lacks speed (5.35) and athleticism for a zone-blocking scheme. In protection, he can anchor against most bull rushers after two steps. He also is capable of burying people in the run game more than Van Roten and Lewis.

Here is Bob on why Taylor.

So Barrington and Palmer stick. Johnny Jolly and Josh Boyd too.
Finley, Quarless, Taylor and Bostick at TE.

Not sure what the full 53 looks like, but it feels to me like there's going to be some more shuffling of depth. I could see them kicking the tires on a OL...and the backup QB situation is downright scary.

Don't know if anyone's posted this. NOTABLE CUTS http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000236408/article/down-to-53-tracking-the-nfls-notable-roster-cuts

It's the roughest time of year in the NFL.

Cuts are underway as teams had until 6 p.m. ET on Saturday to reduce their rosters from 75 to 53 players. You can get the complete list on the roster cuts tracker, but Around The League will keep a running tally of the biggest names right here.

Tim Tebow, New England Patriots quarterback: The Patriots decided they were better off with only two quarterbacks on the roster, and a developmental quarterback possibly going to the practice squad. It's hard to imagine Tebow getting a better chance to keep his career going. It's quite possible that this is the end for him.
NFL roster cut tracker
Teams have until 6 p.m. ET on Saturday to reduce their rosters to 53 players. Who has been cut so far?

Jonathan Dwyer, Pittsburgh Steelers running back: This was among Saturday's biggest surprises. Dwyer was cut loose despite an improved preseason and Le'Veon Bell's injury. Felix Jones remains on the roster.

Vince Young, Green Bay Packers quarterback: This was a small surprise following Graham Harrell's release. The Packers will either roll with B.J. Coleman as the backup or sign someone off waivers.

Robert Meachem, San Diego Chargers wide receiver: Meachem costs the Chargers $6.875 million this year in dead cap money, but he was of no use for them. He'll go down as one of the worst free agent signings of the last five years.

Antoine Winfield, Seattle Seahawks cornerback: This is why we called the Seahawks the deepest roster in the league. It was reported early in the day that Winfield would be cut, then Jay Glazer of FoxSports.com reported that he would retire. He'll go down as one of the most underrated cornerbacks of his generation.

Brady Quinn, Seattle Seahawks quarterback: Tarvaris Jackson beat him out for the backup job, and the Seahawks only kept two quarterbacks. He could land with a team like Buffalo.

Thaddeus Lewis, Buffalo Bills quarterback: Buffalo only has two quarterbacks on the roster, and rookie EJ Manuel is injured.

David Gettis, Carolina Panthers wide receiver: He injured himself during pregame warmups before the last preseason game. Armanti Edwards and Domenik Hixon both made the team.

Brandon Bogotay and Shayne Graham, Cleveland Browns kicker: It's not often that a team has no kickers on the roster. We're going to go ahead and predict that changes before Week 1.

Marvin Austin, David Carr, and Ryan Torain, New York Giants: Austin only last two years after getting taken in the second round. Torain looked like a potential backup after Andre Brown's injury. Brown made the team. Carr could land elsewhere. Wide receiver Ramses Barden was also placed on injured reserve. Mike Patterson made the team.

Ben Ijalana and Drake Nevis, Indianapolis Colts: These were the second-round and third-round picks in the Polians' last draft in the Colts. Yikes.

Bobby Rainey and Tandon Doss, Baltimore Ravens: Rainey's release means the Ravens are only carrying two running backs. That will surely change. They kept seven wide receivers, including rookies Aaron Mallette and Marlon Brown.

Austin Collie, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver: Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports the former Indianapolis Colts won't make the team. At least he stayed healthy in camp.

Ryan Lilja, Denver Broncos: Peyton Manning's former teammates' comeback was a nice story, but his knee bothered him.

Danny Watkins, Philadelphia Eagles guard: The 28-year-old former firefighter was one of the best stories and strangest first-round picks in recent memory. It didn't work out for him under Andy Reid or Chip Kelly.

Greg McElroy, New York Jets quarterback: Matt Simms earned the No. 3 quarterback job. It's quite a story for a player that made virtually no impact in college football.

John Skelton, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback: Josh Johnson won the battle for the backup job behind Andy Dalton.

Tony Moeaki, Kansas City Chiefs tight end: He once flashed serious potential, but hasn't been able to stay healthy. He was waived/injured.

D.J. Williams, Green Bay Packers tight end: He has a lot of athleticism and played a ton with the Packers' starters during training camp. Look for him to get a job.

Max Starks, San Diego Chargers tackle: King Dunlap won the right to protect Philip Rivers' blindside.

Michael Bamiro, Philadelphia Eagles tackle: The mammoth Stoney Brook tackle received a lot of guaranteed money to sign with the Eagles. He could land on the practice squad.

Clay Harbor, Philadelphia Eagles tight end: Chip Kelly decided to keep Emil Igwenagu over Harbor.

Cody Grimm, Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety: Russ' son gave up a lot of big plays in Tampa's now-crowded secondary.

Jermaine Cunningham and Zoltan Mesko, New England Patriots: Mesko has been one of the better punters in the league, so his release comes as a surprise. Ryan Allen won the job with a strong camp. Cunningham, the No. 53 pick in the 2010 draft, never could build on a solid rookie season as a pass rusher.

Rusty Smith, Tennessee Titans quarterback: The Titans just kept two quarterbacks. Smith could find a job elsewhere.

Fernando Velasco, Tennessee Titans center: He started 16 games for the team last season.

Marcus Trufant, Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback: General manager David Caldwell will roll with one of the most inexperienced cornerback groups in football.

John Connor, Bengals fullback: "The Terminator" didn't make the squad. That's good news for "Hard Knocks" regular Orson Charles.

Jimmy Clausen, Carolina Panthers quarterback: Derek Anderson is the team's backup. Clausen's release, as NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported, comes as little surprise.

Drayton Florence, Carolina Panthers cornerback: Rapoport was told Florence will be released, which comes as a surprise after the team signed him to a one-year, $1 million contract in March.

J'Marcus Webb, Chicago Bears offensive tackle: After struggling through 44 starts over three seasons, the 6-foot-7 offensive tackle tweeted his release Friday morning. It's a good sign for the young Bears offensive line.

Jordan Palmer, Chicago Bears quarterback: The founder of RunPee.com could get a call during the regular season if backup Josh McCown is hurt. The Bears also released quarterback Trent Edwards, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

David Nelson, Cleveland Browns wide receiver: Rapoport was told by a source informed of the move that Nelson won't make the team in Cleveland. Signed for cheap, Nelson couldn't make an impact this summer after suffering an ACL tear in 2012 and battling a bone bruise in training camp.

Matt Leinart, Buffalo Bills quarterback: On the heels of a rough-and-tumble outing against the Detroit Lions on Thursday, the former first-round draft pick tweeted Friday that he has been released by the Bills. His career probably is over.

Crezdon Butler, Buffalo Bills cornerback: Butler is not a big name, but he was viewed as a potential starter following Stephon Gilmore's injury.

Daniel Fells and Jake Ballard, New England Patriots tight ends: The Patriots have cut ties with two tight ends. Fells has been released after signing a three-year, $5.25 million contract in 2012. Ballard, claimed off waivers from the New York Giants last year, also was cut. Ballard lacked speed after surgery. This is a good sign for Rob Gronkowski, who is not expected to land on the PUP list. Undrafted rookie Zach Sudfeld and Michael Hoomanawanui are the healthy Patriots tight ends. Tim Tebow was not among the Patriots' first 10 cuts.

Brian Banks, Atlanta Falcons linebacker: Jay Glazer of FoxSports.com first reported that Banks was let go, and the Falcons later confirmed the news. His inspirational story might not be over. Glazer hints Banks could have some sort of role with the team.

Dennis Dixon, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback: He never really had a chance after the Eagles drafted Matt Barkley.

Tony Pashos, Washington Redskins offensive tackle: ESPN.com's John Keim first reported that Pashos was released by the team, a move that ensures Tyler Polumbus will start at right tackle for the Redskins.

Mike Thomas, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver: The former Jacksonville Jaguar's career continues a steep decline. He caught 66 passes only a few years ago.

Austin Davis, St. Louis Rams quarterback: Kellen Clemens will backup Sam Bradford.

Anthony Allen and Delone Carter, Baltimore Ravens running backs: The Ravens just traded for Carter, but he didn't last long. It looks like Bobby Rainey will be the team's No. 3 running back.

Dan Carpenter, New York Jets kicker: Carpenter just signed with the Jets a few days ago after he was cut by the Arizona Cardinals. His release leaves Nick Folk as the only kicker on the Jets' roster.

Lance Ball, Denver Broncos running back: Ball's release essentially locks Knowshon Moreno into third-down duties until Monte Ball and Ronnie Hillman shore up their pass protection skills. Undrafted rookie C.J. Anderson is expected to take the fourth running-back spot.

The dude doesn't lack in size. He may have lost a lot in the last three years, which could be an understatement, but I'd bring him in for a tryout at right tackle. Don't let him even get a sniff at left. I remember him being a fairly solid RT, but teams for some reason tried to push him over to LT, and he struggled mightily. The Steelers franchised him as an RT in 2009, and resigned him for 1 season last year which he started all 16 games in. I'm not saying he's the future, or that we should necessarily even sign him, but it wouldn't hurt to bring him in for a tryout. You can't teach 6-8, 345. No chance in hell it happens, but it's a good thought.

Panther's cut David Gettis, a 6-3 220 lb. wide receiver with great hands. I watched him this preseason and was impressed. Great route runner and has quickness. He's injured so he'd be long term project.

I think Boyd vs Miller is the wrong argument here. If my count is correct, TT kept 8 OL and 8 DL. Given the relative talent level of the 2 groups, he could have kept 9 DL and 7 OL. It's hard to justify keeping 8 on the OL. Only 6 were really worth keeping, although I agree you have to keep 7, at least until Sherrod is ready to play. I don't have a problem so much with keeping Boyd. The Packers are a draft and develop team. Some guys need more than a month to develop. Taylor is a mauler. Gives them something they don't have otherwise. While I bet DL get hurt with more frequency than OL, the 8th lineman for the Packers O will get more snaps than the 8th D lineman. Neither is going to be active though.

pbmax
08-31-2013, 09:59 PM
Miller had two years to make the Bears and the first season made the active roster for one game and the practice squad for the other fifteen. Its not clear but looks like he did not get claimed after he was cut in 2012 final roster cutdown. Packers picked him up off the street in October of 2012.

So rather than just assume bad faith on Thompson's part, could we surmise that there is demand for Boyd's skill set and measurables (5th round pick) beyond that for Miller's good preseason games against backups?

Maybe Ted knows what he is doing and what it will take to slide someone to the PS?

You guys think he'd be better than EDS?

In anything I've seen of Boyd - going back to college games I looked at of him, I have yet to see him make a single play, or get off a single block.

Amazing.
