View Full Version : The Official Gameweek Discussion thread: 2013 Week 3: Packers v Bengals

Week 3 features a battle of two 1-1 teams. Both are coming off good wins - the Packers thrashing a surprisingly weak Washington, and the Bengals stuffing a weakened Pittsburgh 20-10.

The Bengal will prove a much tougher test than Washington, especially with the game at Cincinnati. The Packers look like a better team, but there is not much of a margin of error.

It will all come down to how well GBs OL does against Cinn's DL. If they keep the Bengals linemen off Rodgers and he doesn't get skittish, the Packers win 24-17. If Rodgers is feeling pressure all night from the Bengal front four the outcome might be the exact reverse.

Plus we can't turn the ball over. That IMO was the main reason why we lost in SF and the 9ers are a better team than Cincy.

Packers secondary is my concern. Cinci has some pretty damn good receivers and two very, very good TE's. The middle of the field has been a huge weakness for the Packers D. Those TEs will exploit that weakness. Caper's needs to come up with something good to stop that - maybe pressure Dalton into some bad throws that the Packers need to take advantage of. We haven't seen alot of pressure/blitzes, maybe by design because of the last two QBs they faced and their threat to run. I think pressure is key against a young QB in Dalton.

Cinci has some serious skill position players, and a tough, tough defense.

It comes down to Rodgers being kept clean, no turnovers, and the defense forcing Dalton into some bad throws while stuffing the run.

A tall order on the road. It'll be interesting to see if the secondary play gets better, as it did a bit last week. More Banjo means McMillan The Wife would be back to his dime back role more, and I think we'll see House outside and Tramon Williams playing the slot. Sorry, Micah Hyde.

Should be a tight one.

So we lost to SF close in SF, beat Was at home.
They lose close at Chi, beat Pit at home.
Their DL is their strenght and they have a decent LB group. Once again the secondary is the weakness which helps Arod, but this secondary is better than Was.
Getting the running game going will be hard against this group, but maybe Starks preformance this week will buy Arod extra time at the start of the game.
It will be a tough game but I think we in a close one. I hope Franklin does something in this game.

LBs are decent, but they're not exactly coverage specialists like the 9ers LBs. I won't be surprised to see Cobb giving them hell in the middle.

GB wins if:
the D stops the run game, and tackles better,
the O doesn't turn the ball over, and gets 60+ yards from Starks.

Dalton is crafty but after watching the QB's in the first two games he looks like a slow knuckleballer. Some of his throws were not impressive, but he can find a way to win.
CIN has a good defense but if GB's receivers can get YAC they'll be ok. I think Newman, Pacman, and Hall are decent CB's but they could have trouble with GB WR's. Can the CIN LBs cover Finley?

Protect Rodgers with runs and short passes till their D creeps up. Then BAM!

Defensively, stop the run, then crumple the pocket. Make it look like Dalton's passes are coming out from a sea of swarming bodies.

Yup, but he was not the main culprit that day. It was Colledge, who got moved out to LT after Clifton went down and gave up four sacks in the second half to Antwan Odom (he had five total).

Cincinnati is a fun place to see a game. Fans are pretty into their team - tailgate is crowded with lots of the cornhole games. The crowd will remain standing maybe 80% of the game, and they have the weird guy who shows up in the orange stormtrooper outfit.

http://www.geekologie.com/2008/10/21/bengalstrooper.jpg

For some reason, the cheerleaders were at our hotel. They are called the Ben Gals (get it?) and they are very friendly and relatively inexpensive*

Now, I'm sure the Bengals fans treat Browns and Steelers fans differently, but there was a lot of love and respect for Packer fans - at least in 2005, the last time I was there. Can't make it this time, but wish I could.

*just kidding, they are very nice southern girls mostly.

KY, what do you see from your perch in northern KY??

Well, for one thing, no one here is talking any shit.

Mr average Bengal fan is scared to death to face Rodgers and the Pack.

The Bengals have many of the same strengths and weaknesses that the Packers do. In fact, Cinci has a better defense than GB does. But there is one glaring weakness. Safety. The free safety is Reggie Nelson a former #1 for Jax. He is a decent hand back there. The up S job is split bc neither of 'em can get the work done. George Iloka and Taylor Mays play a rover SS position and both of these boys are pretty aimless. They just can't understand the covers and when to give help and where their help is coming from. Cutler made fools of both of 'em in the Bear game. The main thing in their favor is the Bengals stellar front 7. Cinci is one of the few teams that has a 8 man rotation in their front 4. These guys are quick, strong, and very smart.

The game should boil down to protection. If our OLine can't fend off the Bengals front 4, we are hurtin'.

On defense, we must pressure the shit out of Bengal QB Andy Dalton. They call the kid the "Red Rifle". He can toss the ball, but it can take him quite a few series to get his rifle sighted in. They will hit some big plays, Dalton has a number of effective weapons at his disposal. A new one is TE Tyler Eifert from ND. This kid is a like a young, White Kellen Winslow ( the father, not the son). AJ Green is a stellar WR, but him and Dalton aren't totally in synch yet. Cinci reminds me of the Pack in '09. Everything is coming together, but it ain't all there yet.

Bossman641
09-18-2013, 08:59 AM
I'll echo KY. That SS position is ripe for the picking. Despite testing very well at the combine, Taylor Mays plays like a stiff back there. He gets confused in coverage and is slow in and out of his cuts. I've watched him a few games and also saw him get fooled repeatedly during Hard Knocks. The Bengal LB's are pretty slow. Middle of the field should be open for Cobb and Finley.

Fritz

Look like both QB's will be making hay over the middle.

And it looks like Bahkteria, Sitton, EDS, Lang, and Barclay all need to wear their big boy underwear on Sunday.

As for the Ben-gals...that one on the right. I know Cheesehead Craig has dibs, but, uh, I'll, uh, take sloppy seconds.

No. Mandates are to come out of game and not to return if concussion diagnosed. After diagnosis, have to pass a battery of tests and comparisons to baseline neurological screening before you can be cleared. Can happen within a week.

If Lacy is out they will just go with Starks, Franklin and Kuhn. Nobody they sign off the street could be up to speed and ready to go by Sunday, so no point in shuffling the roster. If Starks needs a rest they can plug in Kuhn for short yardage or play Franklin and pray. If Starks should go down, this will quickly become a very scary scenario of a one-dimensional offense with pass protection problems against one of the best front fours in the league. In hindsight and for this particular week only it would probably have been better to have kept Green and PC'd Franklin.

Terrance Newman and Leon Hall are the starters in base.

In the nickel Pac Jones takes the split end and Hall covers the slot guy.

This game will be more about the Bengals than it is us IMO. Rodgers and company will put up 24+ points on a good Bengal defense. This is gonna be a tough one, people. Make no mistake.

They've got a stout defense down there, and Dalton may not be a world-beater but he's got weapons and he's got an offensive line. Cinci's a playoff-caliber team.

I am hoping like crazy that the Pack can get a little run mojo going. That would be the key to open the door to victory. Makes the pass game way better and helps keep the Packer D off the field.

The Bengals have holes, mainly on D.

But so do we.

I think our offense can get going against their secondary, but the Bengals front four can be a real bitch to contain.

If they get good pressure on ARod, it will cover up their iffy secondary.

A lot rides on Dalton. He is erratic as hell. He started very poorly against the Steelers. If Dalton is hitting his passes from the start against us, OUR shaky safeties come into play. If that is the case, the "paper tigers" could be a major pain in the ass.

2. Packers’ defensive game plan vs. A.J. Green

I’m thinking the Packers should lean on some 2-Man (two-deep, man-under) this week versus the Bengals wide receiver. That allows defensive backs to sit hard to the inside, play aggressively on intermediate cuts and use the deep half safety over the top.

Yes, the middle of the field can be exposed in 2-Man if the safeties are late to overlap the throw, but taking away the deep ball versus Green has to be a priority.

House ascendant; also probably doesn't hurt that Williams has a lingering groin tweak, as Holmgren used to say.

House will be outside with Shields and Tramontana in the slot against the Bengals. Its seems like this is Whitt's preferred alignment even if injuries weren't an issue. Will be interesting to see what Hayward's return will do. Though I think the dime defense will have about the best 4 CB lineups in the League.

Williams suffered a flare up in his groin on Friday and is listed as probable to play, but the indication is he’ll be a full-go against the Bengals with the secondary looking to tap into his knowledge bank inside at times.

Nope, I had a dream last night about the game. The pack get up 65-28 and the network switches to a different game early in the 3rd quarter. About 30 minute later they switch back because it is now 65-61 after James Jones fumbles and Cin returns for a TD.

Pack win 72-68 as Arod brings the pack back with a late score. Arod is interviewed after the game as says that if you have to put up 70 points to win you don't deserve to win.

Bad Fritz bad

I know. I just have a bad feeling about this game. Cinci has the offensive tools and the talent in the trenches to win, especially at home.

And every year, isn't there a stretch in which the Pack loses a game people think they "shouldn't" lose, and everyone goes bonkers with anxiety and frsutration? I think I'd like to get that out of the way sooner rather than later this year. Though I'd prefer a Pack win today.

As I said on GameDay First, Amendola's groin tear is off the bone. Good news? He can't hurt it worse, which is why he practiced this week.

Ow, ow, OWW! Still he's no Jack Youngblood.

Me, too Fritz.

There is a ton of stuff to worry about that I don't see covered anywhere, the net or media.

The Bengals now have the outstanding TE duo in the league. Jermaine Gresham and Tyler Eifert are the real deal. they lead the league for TE dup production by quite a margin. Gresham has been to two Pro Bowls and Eifert is a #1 pick from ND. these two boys are out to give our ratty ass safety corp nightmares.

AJ Green is a total bitch to cover for any secondary. I'm really paranoid because he's coming back after a terrible outing vs Pitt. the good ones play better when they are pissed.

I'm glad Marvn Jones the other WR is dinged, but the other WR Mo Sanu is fast and physical and can really burn teams when singled up in cover.

A rookie RB, Giovani Bernard is on the verge of stardom. He's like a young Ray rice with jets. He smoked PB with a little jet route that left the D in it's tracks. Our ILB corp will have to pick him up.

The last match-up dilemma is the Bengals rush line. Everybody talks about Geno Atkins. We'll have to double him. The Bengals DE's are also first rate. Carlos Dunlap is tall and fast with savage hands. I hope Barclay can hang on against this guy. The other DE is Michael Johnson. He has a big game about every 3 games. He hasn't played well in the first 2. He's very tall and athletic. I'm hopin' Bach can show he belongs and handle this tall SB.

Well, I'll be there. Look for the old guy 18 rows behind the Packer bench. Lombardi hat, Nitschke Jersey, cute 27 year old blonde beside me. Don't worry Snake, it's me daughter.

I'm so nervous I could cry.

The Bengals shouldn't be taken lightly, but they only have 2 sacks total in the first two games. It will be difficult to contain their TE's and AJ Green, but in a shootout, we should win.

Ahh, who cares if they lose. Packers have a very good team that will make the playoffs.

I'm glad to be entertained by a challenging game. Eat drink and be merry, for tomorrow you may die.

I think the Packers will win because the Bengals are an AFC team with funny uniforms.
