Calvin out

Calvin Johnson inactive.

Major suck job. What fun is it to beat a team without their superstar player?

This just sucks ass. Lions have another receiver out too. This makes a win less sweet, and a loss more sour. I don't like it.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 11m
Inactive for the #Packers: Hayward, Starks, Palmer, Van Roten, Bostick, Boyd and C.J. Wilson.

At this point I kinda want to see what Bostick can do. But I think the Packers mainly want him around for next year.

Regarding wins, they only ask how many; not how.

Ahhh, I don't care about "they." I turn on my TV set to be entertained. It doesn't hurt me too much if the Packers lose. I'll take that risk for the joy of a greater challenge.

I think Packers should at least sit Jordy Nelson to even things up, it's the sporting thing to do.

Harlan Huckleby

stop reggie bush and the lions should not be able to move the ball today

Probably so.

I think the Packers are built to succeed against the Lions defense. We'll see.

Lions will lean heavy on Bush and the tight ends. Johnson out makes me nervous the defense will relax and it will still be a shootout. Packers 38, Lions 27. I'm off to a new found bar that promises to have the game on with the sound......a godsend in the Illinois. Go Pack!

I endorse this POV. Especially after Matthews's semi-regular hamstring absences.

Calvin out

That was a good start. I love the smell of Calvin out in the morning.

Weel, Goose is better than Buck. I think.

pbmax
10-06-2013, 12:04 PM
OK. Let me impersonate wist. Why are we playing a 2-4 when there is no Johnson and Burleson?

pittstang5
10-06-2013, 12:05 PM
Defense playing off?

pbmax
10-06-2013, 12:06 PM
Hawk won that audible battle. pick with nice stop.

However, play before Shields whiffed on tackle

pittstang5

uh.....

pbmax
10-06-2013, 12:08 PM
Defense playing off?

Yep. Waiting for Stafford to do something dumb?

Jones with nice blitz

pittstang5
10-06-2013, 12:08 PM
nice jones, way to keep going even after you tripped

Teamcheez1
10-06-2013, 12:08 PM
They are really playing soft to start the game. Why the 5-10 yard cushion? Dom must not realize Johnson is out.

pbmax
10-06-2013, 12:09 PM
uh.....

I think they are worried about the short fast screen game to Bush and bunched receivers more than Bush running.

pbmax
10-06-2013, 12:10 PM
Well, that last 3 plays were perfect 3-4 fire zone defense.

swede
10-06-2013, 12:11 PM
The "let them make a mistake"defense works as long as they make mistakes.

Still, that high effort blitz by Jones was a good force into bad down and distance.

pbmax

The "let them make a mistake"defense works as long as they make mistakes.

Could be that. But I think Goose/Johnston's point about concern about the screen game and fast short passes is more likely the cause.

So far, Bush has only carried twice.

pittstang5
10-06-2013, 12:15 PM

Nice Mike Neal play.

swede

Yes.

Although kneeling that player down to hold the ball aint much of a coverage advantage. ref likes pink.

pbmax
10-06-2013, 12:32 PM
BTW, kudos for Raji for 2 gapping this year like a younger Pickett. Wonder of it was the coach, Jolly or Raji himself that made the change happen.

Our punt returners seem to have less than optimal blocking. Do NFL position coaches yell like youth football coaches at games? Like, "Block, dammit! BLOCK!"

pbmax
10-06-2013, 12:36 PM
Another bad hole read I think.

swede
10-06-2013, 12:38 PM
First quarter in. Offensive line can be average and we can win. They just can't be bad.

I think they are pretty close to average, and that will be good.

that shouldn't happen when you draft guys just for their special teams abilities like we do

That was better but he had a gap to the right.

I agree. His second option throws have been a bit off. But he also has had 2 (Finley/Taylor) or 3 (Jones/Cobb) drops go against him.

Guiness
10-06-2013, 12:50 PM

Oh, no. Calling timeouts to force punt on 2nd and 6. Not good.

I have disliked MM's strategy of calling timeouts for the other team late in the half every time he does it. All it does is allow the team time to realize that they can in fact move the ball on us and then they still have the time to do so. The Lions likely would have had only 60 seconds after that first 3rd down completion, and after the sack they may have not even tried to score. But since MM called timeouts for them, the Lions got 3 points. Terrible strategy. When you add the fact that our offense is playing very poorly and would likely not score in a 2 minute drill anyway, the strategy makes even less sense.

I agree. The defense didn't look so spectacular this year that he could be all that confident they wouldn't do...just what they did.

Wow. The Lions without their premier player, and their second-best wide receiver out, too, and the Packers can manage only a three point halftime lead?

What is wrong with this offense? They seem to run in fits and spurts. It's awfully, awfully inconsistent. And I must say MM's playcalling is getting worse, I think.

Third and one, been running the ball well, and you call a screen after your offensive blockers demonstrated they couldn't make the cut block on that type of play last week?

He takes a long time to adjust to changes in the team and performance. He is stubborn. But most good coaches are. Panicked changes during the second quarter or putting in a new offense in Week 3 isn't a better option.

The question is when he will break down and adjust to this O line.

No Twitter mention of Lacy. So no injury known. Probably was just Cobb's turn in backfield.
