The Pack are not the only team to suffer from it. That does not make me feel better about what we are all seeing on the field. Some teams are inconsistent and get away with it because they can put together enough effort to win (and have enough leadership and talent). Seattle could have lost to St. Louis (on the road) and Tampa Bay (gulp, at home) in back to back weeks, but figured out a way to win. Indy has beaten some of the NFL's best this year and just got blown out by the Kellen Clemens-led Rams and had to scratch and fight last week to come back against the struggling Texans. Figuring out the NFL from week to week can be a challenge. How would you like to make your living picking games? :-)
As for the Packers inconsistency, it's strange.
The good: They have had solid defensive games this year, including Washington, (Cincinnati first half with the pressures/turnovers), Detroit, Baltimore, and Cleveland. These games showed guys being stout against the run, having multiple guys around the ball and wrapping up the ball carrier and putting at least some pressure on the QB.
The bad: The secondary having no answer for San Francisco's passing attack game one, Clay hurting his hammy and out of the second half of the Bengals game and the defense giving up the lead, giving up garbage time points to Minnesota, and the overall inconsistency of not generating turnovers or creating consistent pressure.
The ugly: The last two games at home defensively. One was without Matthews and Perry to create pressure and this last one was with them. Not stopping the run and creating down and distance issues for either Chicago or Philly, which leads to inability to pressure which leads to shot plays by the opposing offenses, and big plays given up by the secondary.
The solution: Get back to what you were doing against Detroit and Baltimore and in stretches of other games, which is to say, stop the run, win the down and distance battle on defense and create opportunities to have a pass rush on third and long which will give your DB's a chance to compete for passes thrown under duress instead of ones being thrown from a clean pocket. To me it all starts with stopping the run consistently. How about you?
