New Orleans was too conservative with their early playcalls. They need to get Graham involved.

Saints defense is doing the best they can, but their offense is hanging them out to dry.

I think it has something to do with Harvin going into a fetal position to make sure he doesn't get killed.

Well, Rob Ryan doesn't seem to coordinate run defense better than Capers.

Drew Brees doesn't seem to like to throw in wet weather. Odd, for someone having gone to school at Purdue. He's been terrible with gloves, just go without.

Guiness

Good game to watch. Some observations...

Saints need to give up on the passing game. The rain is just too bad, all they're doing it giving away downs by trying to air it out. I think Brees ego is the problem here, he's saying 'I can throw it dammit'
Chippy, chippy, chippy game. The altercation between Kearse and an NO player (Lewis?) should have resulted in penalties, no idea why the refs ignored it. Not shoving matches, but guys taking shots at each other, seen a few WRs get shoved back to the ground after they get up
As expected, refs letting DBs mug the WR...except for a call giving the Hawks first on goal after a 3rd down incompletion!!! Lewis didn't deserve that.
Arm tackling Lynch is a stupid idea
Don't know why, but I don't like Harvin. I was calling for the Saints DB to pile on in the endzone, he did, and Harvin needed help to get off the field. I cheered, and I really don't do that.

pbmax

Sure, but they have been giving up the backside on zone runs a lot. Wide open and the LB is not filling. Cost them a long run and one of the TDs.

Seattle just missed a big opportunity there - Robinson was not touched while down, and absolutely put the ball on the ground.

And Brees with another imcompletion. Stop throwing the ball! Comment at the start of the half was "it's not the rain, it's the wind." I don't care what it is, you can't throw it so stop trying!

Maxie the Taxi

I know the Pat's have had there own injury problems this year, but they have superior coaching to the Packers, so they overcome it.
The Packers had injury problems in 2010 and overcame it to win the Superbowl. Sometimes it works out.

Interestingly the Pat's are the second youngest team in the NFL, behind the Packers, yet they seem to make it work, hmm what's the difference?

The Pats didn't have to play San Fran (yet) and their DBs hung onto the picks that were given them? Their pass rush is better? Their OL is better?

Belichick is a great coach, likely the best of this era, but the Packers and Pats aren't that far apart. By the looks of things, Green Bay seems like an AFC team -- great offense with a defense that needs to create takeaways to succeed.

Amazing a what a change of scene does.

This.

I don't remember him for much of anything before that huge run vs the Saints in the playoffs in 2010. IIRC, we at Packerrats had a close eye on him because he was 'almost' a Packer. Rodgers was even publicly stumping for him. But then, James Starks ran GB to glory and a Superbowl title.

If he played for Green Bay he'd probably have shredded his hammy by now. They have modern medicine in Seattle that prevents those sorts of things.

Amazing a what a change of scene does.

It wasn't a change of scene. Believe it or not, it was a change in his "pad level:"

Tom Brady was cool with it. So was coach Bill Belichick, once his running back took his advice midseason and lowered his pad level so his 250-pound frame wouldn't be so easy to haul down.

"Once I changed that, I started breaking tackles," explained LeGarrette Blount, New England's newly minted all-time franchise leader in single-game postseason rushing touchdowns (four).

Maybe Stubby is a genius after all.

Both teams have been doing well over the past 20 years. NE is 237-114. We are 220-128-1. NE went to Super Bowl 5 times and won three. We went three times and won two. I guess that's a few beats we missed compared to them. Still, we're nitpicking and that's what we do this time of year.

I want our OT to be healthy, but I wouldn't cry if TT used his only big FA signing on a monster tackle and lets JJones walk. Don't reup Jordy, franchise him once. Keep getting the Jarrett Boykins of the world to produce with Rodgers throwing it to them, and run the ball well. With a great OL, I think Rodgers can make guys like Edelman look great same as Brady.

I don't know. I think you underestimate Hoody/Brady and over-estimate Stubby/Rodgers. Hoody is not married to any particular system or game plan. He adjusts to fit the players he has, then finds the missing but necessary pieces to make it work. Seems like Stubby sticks to his idea of the way things should be done and doesn't adjust. Stubby is an ideologue; Hoody is pragmatic.

Two examples, Stubby will never abandon his emphasis on throwing downfield trying to make big plays. He tried it even when Rodgers, Cobb and Jones were hurt. Hoody went that route a few years ago then switched strategy to match his personnel. Now he's a dink and dunk, rushing offense.

Second, I think Stubby is married to the 3-4 defense despite his personnel because that's what he believes in. A few years ago Hoody switched to a 4-3 for typical, pragmatic reasons:

"We wanted a lot of carryover between our run responsibilities and run fits, and some of our pressure defenses and things like that. We'll transition and build into some of our odds fronts, but we felt like in trying to evaluate young players, asking them to learn one system in a 3-4 and then learn another system in nickel [was too much]. As you know, we were in nickel defense just as much as we were 3-4 defense because of teams using multiple receivers on early downs and two-minute and all those kind of things.

"So we felt like it would be a better opportunity to evaluate our players and not try to over-install and put in a ton of defense. Try to cut it down a little bit and see if we could execute it better. Certainly, we have a long way to go but I do feel like we're making progress, and I think our players at least understand what we're doing.

"There are so many intricacies to a 3-4 defense that I just didn't know if we'd be ready to handle them this year. Probably wouldn't have been, to be honest with you."
http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/new-england-patriots/post/_/id/4706060/belichick-explains-d-switch-on-sirius

I think the 3-4 is here to stay in Green Bay as long as Stubby is here, despite the fact that TT's youthful team-building philosophy contradicts what Capers needs to make the 3-4 work well.

Just my opinion.

Its a tough question. Capers has an argument: this system works, why are we screwing with it?

Of course, M3 and T2 have been there longer, have already setup the organization and its philosophy and can fairly ask, "as we made clear we need yo to make this work in our operating environment".

It could be a case that a mutual parting of ways would be a good thing unless they have something specific in mind to change that would make it work with younger players like Hoody did.

it sure looks like they are trying to let the 9ers win

pushing and shoving after every play and only one team is getting flagged, something smells bad

i think it would be great someday to just see the crowd get so fed up that they just rush the field and pull a couple of officials apart. in brazil last year the crowd stormed the field, beheaded the ref and put his head on a stack at midfield

that would be fun to see

of course the ref did pull out a knife and stab a player to death before the crowd rushed the field to cut off his head, so they had reason

and yes, this is the same country that will be holding the biggest sporting event in the world this summer

Same as Badger whining over Pac 12 refs. You have to prepare so as not to rely on the refs. Forget about it, move on.

Easy to say, but when you are super pumped, come into a game to establish you belong and the refs call it that way it affects you. Should it, no, does it, yes. Losing mentality? A bit, but again, I watched this happen in the NBA through the Jordan years to the point that Mark Jackson was standing at half court with his shorts pulled down while Jordan dunked at the other end in an "amazing" comeback. It ruins the game. It changes the culture of the game to money first, winning second.

I understand you have to tell your team its "loser mentality" and you must do everything you can to combat the mental toll of it, but the honest truth is that in the end it affects you.

49ers are in the Panthers head. They are pulling juvenile crap and the Panthers are caught reacting.

Or are the officials in the Panthers head? Letting the other team in your head is for losers :P

sorry, but it effects the guys on the team that thinks 40 degrees is the coldest they've ever felt, vs the guys that live in the area where it can get down around zero routinely.

But Rodgers is a Cali guy. Only lives in Wisconsin during the season. Sorry, but the reason our D held them in check is because the officials only called a couple penalties on our DB's who were acting like they were Richard Sherman the whole game. Devon House is going to sign with Seattle in the offseason based on that game.

Yea, I was joking. It should have been a no flag because there was simply no way the defender could have avoided the contact. Next tactic is going to be QB's head diving into defenders helmets to steal a call....sort of like the flop in the NBA.

I was referring to the headbutt non call on Boldin when the ref was 2 feet away. That was simply not calling something you called carolina for earlier.

Incidentally to follow through on my conspiracy theory, the NFL really wants Brady/Manning. Rivers and the Chargers will get hosed by the officials this game.

Was it the same ref? Because that is not normally called in face to face confrontations. I think the first call was ridiculous. The second non-call sound.

I would not be opposed to outlawing it specifically just to avoid escalation, but that would be in future games.

Right. As though the 49ers weren't obviously superior to Carolina. Had to be a fix for them to win that game. Same goes for Seattle - NO was obviously better, but the NFL wants it's dream matchup. Funny how all the co-conspirators never ever reveal or let slip one shred of proof of their nefarious misdeeds. I don't think he had control and his butt hit the ground before he had it. Only point of contention is why it took defender a couple of pulls to yank ball out.

Actually an NBA referee did once about 7? years ago. That goofy center John Sally also said it once. As for the Seattle/NO game, I would ask you...in a league that has become dominant for passing, do you think that officiating might have something to do with Brees being shut out for 50+ minutes and not getting a score until the game was decided? How about Rivers, who is playing very well lately, having 1 yard passing in the first half? I simply think the officiating is completely different in the playoffs than it was all season long. If we didn't have Devon House committing penalties on every play we might have been blown out. House is brilliant or lucky, not sure which.

Hey, maybe it was the 45 mile an hour winds and rain that affected a dome team that struggles mightily outdoors. Oh, but wait, weather doesn't affect scoring (*chortle*) so it must be a conspiracy. Maybe playoff football is just tighter because better teams play each other with everything on the line. The team that score 606 and set a record only score 24 points. Maybe the refs bet the under on total points??
