Stop the presses!

Mike Vandermause ‏@MikeVandermause 15m
I have learned that #Packers won't bring back special teams assistant Chad Morton.

Assistant strength coach Zac Woodfin, who @TomOatesWSJ once confused for Scott Tolzien, has left #Packers to take head job at alma mater UAB

Hopefully they will hire somebody who can teach guys (Johnathan Franklin?) how to return kickoffs.

Do we really know that? When I was at one practice last summer, it was Morton working with the kick returners. I doubt we really know what areas of ST's Morton was most responsible for.

It's the coverage units that are a nightmare IMO

With that being said, last time we fired our special teams coach we hired the assistant (SLOCUM)...which was brilliant

At least we know the assistant won't get the job if MM ever pulls his head out of his ass

So the OLB coach we all seemed to like, the ST assistant nobody cared about, the QB coach Rodgers didn't initially want, and the assistant strength coach...seems kind of topsy turvy.

Source sale that #Packers will add RBs coach Sam Gash, formerly of the Detroit #Lions. They are in the process of hiring ST asst coach also.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 27m
#Packers are hiring former Illinois coach Ron Zook to be their OLB coach to replace Kevin Greene, source said.

Aaron Nagler ‏@Aaron_Nagler 26m
Zook was the Saints' defensive coordinator when McCarthy was the OC in New Orleans.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 23m
Zook was a special teams coach in Pittsburgh so he's familiar with Capers' system. Coached in New Orleans when McCarthy was there.

Michael Rodney ‏@PackerUpdate 19m
Zook worked with Mike McCarthy in New Orleans. And while nobody coaches with the energy and passion of Greene, Zook comes pretty close.

Rob Demovsky ‏@RobDemovsky 1m
Ron Zook is joining the staff, but as @TomSilverstein just tweeted multiple sources said it may not be as OLB coach. #Packers

That was my first thought on the hire. I remembered the name as a HC candidate (not for GB) several years back. And he's coming in to coach a position that's usually designated for an up-and-comer?

Either Slocum's on thin, thin ice, or M3 was reaching for anyone who'd be willing to coach.

I think he's looking for someone with a proven track record, and Danny Abramowicz wasn't available

Outside of the anomaly in '95, it looks like he'll fit right in.

Interesting that Winston Moss will oversee all #Packers LBs with assistance from Scott McCurley. In past, OLB and ILB coaches were separate.

So.....

Moss now has all the linebackers and the RB coach comes from Detroit, where they rarely run the ball? I guess Gash was hired to teach the young RBs how to catch...it seems the Lion RBs did more of that than actually run the ball.

Not unless they split the DL coaches. More likely, they're staying 3-4 and gave Moss an assistant...

In other news, threre are three DB coaches (CB, S, Assistant DB), and they still can't communicate back there. Too many cooks?

i told you asshole

M3 will never fire his good buddy who just so happens to be one of the most incompetent ST's coaches in recent history

and now he has a high profile assistant to try and help him out. his assistant should be the real and only ST's coach. m3 is just trying to keep his buddy employed at this point

Gash was one heck of a blocking fullback with the Patriots and Bills. All-Pro a couple times.

One guy to coach the Safeties. One guy to coach the Cornerbacks. And one guy to introduce the Safeties to the Cornerbacks.

I never thought the Lions were a bad running team when Gash was the RB coach there. The Lions have just not made much of a commitment to running the ball in recent years.

There was a lot of press about the 'Air Back' this past year. I was reasonably successful, Bush had some good days, and that seems like a good role for him.

Wow. Early in the thread I had visions of coverting to the Jim Haslett version of the Steeler 3-4 with Zook here. But as Asst ST guy?

No idea what to expect. Maybe he helps recruit free agents.

Why are all good Packers Head Coaches the most stubborn people on the planet?
