@TyDunne: #Packers sign another. Guion's agent... RT @thkleine14 Extremely happy for Troy Guion on agreeing to terms with the @packers.

26 yr. old ex-Vike was signed by the Packers to a 1 year deal today. Haven't seen any contract details yet. Guion was released last week.

@RobDemovsky: Guion's deal is for 1 year, could be worth up to $1 million. Base of $730K. SB of $100K plus weekly roster bonuses, per a source. #Packers

Since the Vikes had cut him, he won't factor into the comp picks for next year's draft. Always a consideration where TT is concerned. I kinda see this guy going the way of Philip Merling. Camp body and then gone at the final cutdown.

Really don't know anything about him. 6-4 and 303 lbs. sounds like a good 5-tech DE sized guy. Maybe the C.J. Wilson experiment is finally over with?

its a very low risk signing . you bring in a young guy with the right measurements and see if he can play

maybe camp fodder, but maybe he works out. we're not paying much to find out

good signing imo

Letroy Guion was the lowest rated defensive lineman on the team by Pro Football Focus

maybe the kid just needs to change teams and schemes?

Letroy Guion was always miscast as a nose tackle in the 4-3 Minnesota has been using, and the team could save $4M by jettisoning his $4.3m salary this offseason (per overthecap.com). Maybe he would have more joy in Mike Zimmer’s new defense, but the Vikings would be better off clearing his contract and bringing him back afresh to find out.

they ranked him as a below average starter/adequate role player

I'm not sure but it's seems like maybe 7?

Not Signed: Pickett, Wilson, and Jolly.

Signed: Guion, Peppers, Worthy, Daniels, Raji, Boyd, Jones (Am I missing anyone?)

I think they carried 8 on the final 53 man roster last year and Wilson was inactive for a bunch of games.

If he was poor as a nose in a 4-3 under Frazier, I doubt he is playing NT behind Raji in a 3-4 at 76" and 308 pounds. Sounds like a DE. Even PFF says he shouldn't have been at nose.

Still no obvious backup to Raji unless they REALLY like Boyd there. Outside of preseason, not sure we saw him there.

Really?

I'd like to get a real old-fashioned Packer Rats argument over this, but I have no recollection of this guy. I have an idea of most of the players on the 3 rivals, but I can't say that I ever remember this guy playing a down of defense for the Queens, let alone starting 13 games.

Not laughing but he was pretty bad last year. He got outplayed by Fred Evans but for some reason Frazier kept trotting him out there. He was asked to play more of a NT position so maybe he can be better in some other role. There was alot of excitement with Viking fans when he was cut. He ranked 60 out of 69 DTs per Pro Football Focus.

Not sure what role TT has in mind.

Sometimes a change of scenery or different role helps. Vikings sign a cb named Cox off SD Chargers and he was beyond shitty last year You never know what they see in these guys.

Wasn't Guion the one who used to get all the dumb offsides penalties?

Seems like he's more of a 5 tech than NT, but I'm not exactly in love with this. Seems like a depth pick in case the draft or TC doesn't go how they like and they aren't stuck pulling guys off the street like CHI was last year.
I have no idea how 'athletic' he is. Agree they still need a backup NT. I don't know if Boyd is the answer, but I didn't get the sense the coaches wanted him at nose.

yeah I guess Derek Cox was benched 3 times in 4 weeks. Are you thinking he'll fit right in with Josh Robinson? FWIW I think Zimmer will improve that defense, and the team will be better than 4-5 wins.

Robinson was actually playing better after a horrendous start when he fractured his sternum. THAT has to sting.

A few years ago I liked his potential. He was pretty solid. The whole DL fell off last year. I always felt he'd make a better 3-4 DE and a Vikings buddy of mine agrees. He thinks he'll be a solid rotational guy. More than likely, he's C.J. Wilson but a bit better in pass rush and a bit worse in run defense.

Oh yeah, and Packer fans should know because his two outings against us last year were especially shitty. He looks the part but he's painfully slow and not stout at all for a NT.

Like Peppers, Guion was released by his old team. Therefore, he will not affect the Packers' possible compensatory picks in 2015.

Lmao, so who have the Lions cut recently?

HarveyWallbangers
03-17-2014, 07:47 PM
To be fair, he showed enough potential for the Vikings to give him over $3M/year in 2012, so perhaps a change of scenery will help. I'm not expecting much. It's a C.J. Wilson-like signing, but it's possible he adds some depth. Here's what Spielman said when they resigned him:

"He's an extremely talented athlete," Spielman said. "I know when we had meetings on all of our personnel, we still think there's a huge, huge upside to Letroy.

"I know we played him some at three-technique and some at nose. Talking with (new line coach) Brendan Daly when he came in and (new coordinator) Alan Williams, we feel if we can settle him in at one spot and let him learn and grow in that particular spot that he's only go to learn and grow in that particular spot that he's only going to improve and get better."

The Packers are likely to use him differently.

pbmax
03-17-2014, 07:58 PM
Yeah, unless Dom goes 4-3, I think he plays 5 tech for the Packers.

Which makes me wonder, does the move of Raji back to nose mean that Eagle Oakie is gone? Because if it is, then the run D might improve with the even front. Its one of the reasons M3 wanted to go 3-4 when he was looking for a DC in 2008/9.

If Eagle Oakie is gone, then there are two 5 tech DE spots up for grabs, not just one.

Guion goes 6-3.5 315# according to the JSO. They say he can play anywhere along the line, but he doesn't sound like the brightest jewel in the casket.

Guion's arms were measured at an exceptional 347/8 inches at the '08 combine. He bench-pressed 26 times, posted a 30-inch vertical jump and ran 40 yards in 5.31 seconds.

Two scouts said there was no question that Guion has the size and strength to hold up at nose tackle in a 3-4 defense.
"This kid will give you everything Pickett did," one scout said. "He is a powerful, powerful man. But Pickett would be a much smarter player."

Guion also has extensive experience as a three-technique defensive tackle and, according to one scout, could function over the tackle as a five-technique end.
"It's worth a shot," another personnel man said. "He's country strong. He's fairly athletic and he's played good at times."

I love it when the scouting report on a player is "It's worth a shot".

Just from listening to KFAN up here they like him. Not a terribly great player but he does not NEED to be smart, Pat Williams could speak English but he was a great fat bodied player.

I like the signing.

Contract terms per GBPG:

Defensive lineman Letroy Guion’s one-year contract with the Packers will pay him $985,000, according to a report by USA Today.

Guion received a $100,000 signing bonus and will make a base salary of $730,000. He also will make per-game roster bonuses of up to $105,000 and a workout bonus of $50,000.

His base salary is the vet minimum for him, but I don't think his contract qualifies for the salary cap offset because his bonuses are too high. Looks like the entire amount will count against the Packers salary cap if he makes the final roster.

DT Newly acquired Letroy Guion's ( 2013 - Minny ) received a 1 yr. contract for (up to $1 million) and a $100 K$ signing bonus, per ESPN's Rob Demovsky.

B. J. Raji agreed to a 1 Yr. contract worth $4 million and is expected to be moved to NT.

It might be then projected that if he makes the roster Letroy Guion could backup BJ Raji), and/or be a rotational player on the DL.

Letroy Guion started all 28 games that he appeared in for the club over the past two seasons (2012-13), posting 72 tackles (32 solo), three sacks, 1 FF, 2 PD, and a fumble recovery.

DT Letroy Guion ( Cost maximum $1 million$) ... 2013 - 21 total tackles, 1 SACK , 1 FF and 1 PD.

Compared to :

BJ Raji in 2012-13...in 28 games posted 43 tackles ( 13 solo), ZERO SACKS, ) 0 FF and 2 PD

DT B. J. Raji ( Cost minimum $4 Million$) ... 2013 - 17 total tackles and 'No SACKS for two season's and counting; 0 FF; 0 PD.

GO PACK GO !

Vikings always have solid DL. This is a sweet low risk move.

I think TT wants to go out with a SuperBowl trophy and a middle finger to all his doubters.

Fritz
03-19-2014, 04:42 PM
It'd be sweet if they won it this year, and TT held the SB trophy so his middle finger was sticking up.

My prediction is that we'll know he's retiring when he amasses two or three high-round extra picks for the following year. That means he's gonna bestow those picks on his successor, as a parting gift.

Not like Shermy, who left a sal cap mess for his successor.

Good, solid coach, ol' Shermy. Mostly. I liked his offensive philosophy. But as a GM, he was about as good as Bart Starr. Maybe worse.
