Since it's a Viking game I get you might not want to watch it but check out the halftime show around 1:40:00 - they have some Packer highlights during halftime and those old commercials I actually remember watching. Best watched by the resident old guys here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fztt8yJ42W4&list=WL&index=16

Rookie James Lofton is mentioned.

During the game the great Woody Peoples got a mention. Best name ever.

Yea, bunch of familiar stuff like Jimmy the Greek. Young Irv Cross.

edit:

LOL, straight ahead kicker Rick Danmirt - who was the last straight ahead kicker?

Pinto commercials? "We're a four Pinto family" lol

Didn't bother to look back at how bad the Giants were that year, but it must've been something, they had fans burning their tickets outside the stadium!

See the field for the Cincinnati/Atlanta game? Standing water on the field, I bet that was one of those terrible first generation astro-turf jobs. (edit: checked - yup, astro-turf as Riverfront Stadium)

Check out 1:48:20 for a textbook helmet to helmet tackle. Ragsdale ends up flat on his back after scoring a TD.

That's very cool Rastak...Thanks a bunch.

Doesn't time fly by so very very fast. I was "only" 32 then.

I always enjoyed watching Fran Tarkenton scramble. Jaws and Herman Edwards are playing in this game and Chuck Foreman, Carl Eller and many other blasts from some of our pasts. Time...... :whaa:

Don Criqui on CBS. That is old school.

I love how straightforward the announcing was - they really did do play-by-play. Not all this modern-day soap opera narrative storylines that get constructed, and not all this ex-jock horsing around and pretending they're funny. Sure, ol' Sonny is an ex-jock, but he did try to provide some support for Criqui and kept his comments down a little bit. Not as much critique and judging as today - just a presentation of the game, with some straightforward commentary ("The Viking offensive line has had some problems this year").

The camera work is a lot sketchier than I'd remembered. That's one area that is much better today.

Ah, ol' Chuck Foreman, and Ron Yary. Soem old-school names. Who was that Vikings RB, I think, who wore glasses and had a couple really good seasons? Chuck Muncie? Didn't he play for them at some point?

It was hyped up quite a bit at the time. Not sure if it was Nader or just running with a story for ratings. I do vaguely recall that there were some tests done later that showed it was not any where near the problem it was hyped up to be. It did make for a good scene in Top Secret.

Also had a Pinto. No explosions. However, if your Mother had rolled all the windows up in the car and you and a sibling were screwing around forgetting to close the garage door and couldn't hear her repeated exhortations to close the door so we could get going, then you might try to bang on the windshield to get the attention of two very distracted kids.

You would then find out the windshield wasn't as great a protective barrier as you thought when Mother punches a crack into the glass. Either that, or Mother was exposed to Gamma Rays during atmospheric nuclear tests.

Great post, and video. This was one of the first years I started following football as a kid. I lived in Iowa, and games were regionally televised much like they still are, but in Iowa where there is no predominant team, we always saw the dominant team of Central division at the time...the Vikings. The only time I got to see Packer games on TV back then were if they were playing the Vikings or the Bears. In the 80's and early 90's that regional coverage in Iowa predominantly switched to the Bears, given the build up to the '85 season and they were good for a few years after that. When Ron, Mike and Brett showed up, I saw a lot more Packer games on regional game of the week.

On Sundays in the early 80's, my brother and I would tune the car radio to a very static-filled WTMJ broadcast of Jim and Max, carried by an affiliate station in Platteville, WI I believe, which was about 80 miles from where we lived in Iowa. The broadcasts would go in and out frequently, but we were listening to our beloved Packers, and playing catch in the yard. I'm surprised we didn't ever drain the battery in our old station wagon.

As for the broadcast of this game, and the Packers that year, the '78 season was like an oasis in the desert for Packer fans. Then 1979 came and things were back to normal. Check out the stats from the games during the particular week this game was broadcast, and look at some of the great names:

Here is the game link if you want to watch. There's one play early on in the game where he totally shoots his gap and looks like he has the ball carrier dead to rights, but then gets shaken off because he tackles him too high. I wonder how TT the GM would have graded TT the linebacker?

That link shows how much the game has changed since then, and it's pretty crazy to look at it. Check out some of the offensive lines for the team leaders from the box scores. You don't realize how much the pendulum has swung towards the offense until you look at something like this.

Terry Bradshaw 11/24, 97 yds, 1 TD
Ken Anderson 7/17, 77 yds, 0 TD
Bob Avellini 2/12, 25 yds, 0 TD

Walter Payton 17 rush, 50 yds, 0 TD
Tony Dorsett 15 rush, 49 yds, 0 TD
John Riggins 11 rush, 43 yds, 0 TD
Terdell Middleton 12 rush, 30 yds, 0 TD

The Bronco ones were particularly interesting...because they won this game!!!
Craig Morton 6/11, 54 yds, 1 TD
Jack Dolbin 2 rec, 21 yds, 0 TD
Jon Keyworth 8 rush, 23 yds, 0 TD

Number of 300 yard passing games: 0
sub 200 yard passing games: 219(!!!)
Number of 100 yard rushers: 4

NFL football ... Offense !? Was the air very thin !?

Yea, bunch of familiar stuff like Jimmy the Greek. Young Irv Cross.

edit:

LOL, straight ahead kicker Rick Danmirt - who was the last straight ahead kicker?

Rashad beats CB Herm Edwards.....

Not going to read the whole thread to see if anyone answered, but I believe the last straight on kicker was Mark Mosely of the Redskins.

The late 70s were fucking GOLDEN! Maybe not for the Packers....but I was having the time of my life. I would never have been caught dead driving a Pinto....not when I owned a 65 Galaxy 500.

A 65 Galaxy 500:

In 1974 I moved back to Saint John, New Brunswick from Burlington, Ontario... to pursue a career doing practical work in "the Canadian Nuclear Power" industry.

I had been employed in engineering and design at Atomic Energy Canada Ltd. in Mississauga, Ont. I drove this car back home to Saint John, NB:

I loved this car and it served me very well for five years. What a beauty she was to/for me.

I admit. My irrational hate of Franco was in part fueled by his uncanny resemblance to Gabe Kaplen.

How can you hate Gabe Kaplan? Was it the complete mining of Groucho Marx for a schtick? (liked him anyway)

I collected beer cans as well and had a lot of Iron City. I did not collect the Steelers cans, part protest, but also they were also hard to come by in Western PA at that time. I hold no grudges over your collection.

If you have a Lambert jersey or Terrible Towel though, there's going to be trouble.

I was a follow on to the gamma radiation comment. In the 2003 re-imagining of the Hulk, some writer in his infinite wisdom decided add gene splicing with a sea cucumber to the Hulk's makeup. I kid you not.

I am going to presume sea cucumbers have some kind of fantastical property that the Hulk was in desparate need of.

I always liked him. Tough son of a bitch.

I get all the Steelers hate here because I can't stand them clowns over the last 30 years but those 70's Steelers teams were something to watch. I say that despite the fact they beat my team in the Super Bowl. The steel curtain was something to see. LC Greenwood reminded me a little bit of Carl Eller.

He was also responsible for one of the best back and forth Miller Lite commercials with Bert Jones.

Beauty and Ugly are all in "the eye of the beholder".

Some see beauty in terms of what many perceive as imperfection.

Your "upside boat description" of the mid 60's Pontiac and Ford is interesting and I'm going to look for that.

One of the cars that Mae and I are now driving is again in what I consider the classic styling for an auto. Maybe I'm repeating a mistake LOL. I actually consider one of our cars ... one of the most beautiful car models I've ever seen in terms of that "Classic Clean Sporty" look.

Am I so wrong?

You guys really went in for the whole Lite beer thing, eh? The opening segment in the original video Rastak posted was a lite beer commercial. There were a couple more in the Packer game. No wonder the jokes about american beer and sex in a canoe abound. The craft beer revolution has done a bit to change that, but the overall perception is still there. When I was in Germany last year, using the word 'beer' and 'American' in the same sentence elicited giggles from grown men.

That a Cadillac CTS? Nice car, and the Northstar engine was a marvel. Probably saved the Cadillac brand that was badly on the ropes at the time and was subsisting pretty much entirely on nostalgia purchases at the time.

Another Ford that was just plain awful was the '76 Thunderbird
http://delivery4u.itgo.com/images/76ktbird10.jpg
Look at the ridiculous hood on that thing, you wouldn't even have to flip it over to go to sea, it was a fricken bow rider! I spent a lot of time being shuttled to hockey games in one of these, and it wasn't just a dog, it was a dog with fleas:mrgreen:
It 'featured' a 460 cu in engine, that I think generated about 1hp per 3 cubic inches! Gas mileage was ridiculous, I remember my friend's father calculating it, and it was sub 10mpg:eek:

I get that not everyone drinks it, but there has to be large swaths who drink it religiously! Of course I can't say much. My brother showed up at the house with king cans of Keystone Light. Going back to my university days, I refused to buy light beer just on principal, booze is so damn expensive up here, I figured I was cheating myself out of alcohol I'd paid for if I bought the light stuff!

Oh, absolutely. The big, mass-marketed beers still dominate beer sales in the US despite their being a brew pub on every other street corner these days.

But the nice thing is that there are a lot more choices. Plus you can always get a Spotted Cow somewhere close.
