Packers guard Josh Sitton said that he has torn a ligament on the bottom of his big toe and will meet with team physicial Patrick McKenzie Thursday to evaluate his condition.
Sitton said he tried an orthodic Wednesday to help alleviate the pain in the toe and may try to practice Thursday. But he said he needed to talk with McKenzie to see what the risk factors were as he decides whether to pursue playing this week.
"What risk I have of re-injurying it and what not," Sitton said. "We were going to see how it was feeling and he'll look at the foot and see where I'm at and he'll be able to determine the risk." | Nov. 5, 2014 2:58 p.m.

So the Packers could possibly end up with Tretter and Lane Taylor at Guard? So that means Garth Gerhart is the backup at C/G, and I guess Tretter would move to T if Bakh or Bulaga went down. I imagine Jerry Vujnovich would probably be activated off the PS. Or maybe they'd sign Tauscher. What the hell did Sherrod do to get cut right now? Hit on Olivia Munn?

America's most famous bully, Richie Incognito, is available.

I would if the Packers were facing a good defense. Plus, the Bears have their own problems on the OL:
http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/packers-next-opponent-bears-b99383621z1-281555651.html
No depth: The Bears will begin the practice week with just seven players in the offensive line.
Matt Slauson, the starting left guard, suffered a season-ending pectoral injury against the Patriots. Tackle-guard Eben Britton, who was playing extensively in six-lineman formations, underwent an appendectomy during the bye week and will sit at least a week.
Rather than insert backup Michael Ola at left guard, a position he started in Games 2-4 for an injured Slauson, coach Marc Trestman decided to move right tackle Jordan Mills to the foreign position of left guard and insert Ola at right tackle.
Ola started at right tackle against the Patriots when Mills continued feeling the affects of off-season foot surgery.
"I thought Mills was OK at right tackle," a personnel man said. "I'm kind of surprised they moved him, actually. They liked him there last year a whole lot. That's a weird one. You usually don't move tackles."

The Bears were on a bye too.
Losing both guards is devastating. Every play is a dogfight on line of scrimmage. Tretter is an undersized, rusty player. Taylor looked bad every time he has been on the field, starting in preseason. Don't know how he made team. You don't notice the O-line because they are usually battling, even when they are having a so-so day.
I trust Tretter to pass block. Packers will have to forget about the run. Maybe it will be OK. More likely it's gonna be a tough game to pull out.

The Chicago Bears are in wait-and-see mode with Martellus Bennett.
The Bears' top tight end sustained a rib injury earlier this week in practice and is now listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Packers. Bennett has become more of a go-to target for Jay Cutler in the passing game, and not having him this Sunday would be a huge blow to the Bears' offense.

I was listening to an analyst in past couple days who just interviewed Tretter, maybe it was Silverstein, maybe Tauscher. Tretter's actual weight is 298, and he is not a powerful guy. He is fine at center, but lacks ideal strength or bulk at guard. This isn't my opinion, it came across the wireless.
Wait a sec, maybe this insight came from McGinn & Dunne podcast. Ya.
In pregame show two weeks ago, Larry McCarren was asked if Tretter could function at other positions. (Now we're into the grey area of my short term memory.) McCarren said Tretter is certainly best suited for center. He also thought Tretter would be better at guard than tackle.

Tretter weighed in slightly heavier than Bakhtiari at the combine, but obviously both have changed since then. Tretter mostly performed better than Bakhtiari in drills at the combine. The common thread in all evaluations of Tretter were that he had very good football smarts, recognized things quickly, etc.
Physically, he might be at a disadvantage, but they lived with Bakhtiari last year and I think Tretter is a similar player.

I don't care, 298lbs, Tretter is NOT the one who is thin!
If one of the two guards can't go, it will be interesting to see how the OL get shuffled. Does Taylor get the start, or do they go with Tretter? Taylor is a much more stout, butRiv that didn't seem to help him much last week.
I bet Lang and Sitton are fighting like hell to get on the field. OL tend to HATE missing time, I remember Rivera was always proud to be out on the field defending Favre no matter what kind of shape he was in. I got a text last night from a friend who's son is in grade 10, kid is 6'4" and 230 or so, size 14 shoes, starting LT and team captain on the varsity team:bow:.

Tretter may not be able to perform at Guard. While I don't think his body type is the problem (even at 298), playing Guard is light years different than playing tackle, which is his other position. You have a very short space to work in and you must be quick but not overcommit. Because while that DT isn't as fast as the DE, you get unsquare to him, you are going to get blown past or knocked on your keister. Unless you are Linsley or Wells strong, its over.
Colledge, Sherrod and even Lang are tackle types who can get in a bad way at Guard at times by taking a false first step/move.
As bad as Taylor is it can get worse. But Taylor is bad enough it might be worth finding out what Tretter can do there.

For damage control purposes, Tretter is a good option at any position. From what I've read, he's extremely athletic, very good at blocking linebackers. That tells me he will at least compete and stick with his man for a few seconds.
I'm saying if the Packers have to go with Tretter and "Open Lane" Taylor at guard, it could be a weakness inside.

I think you heard this, Reggie did not work out.
He didn't like it and didn't do it.
Being Reggie, the coaches would let him skip all lifting.
Reggie would have a standing bet that he could out rep anybody on the team and a few times a year, he's go down there and do just that. Reggie was all natural, fast quick and strong. He'd work out, but no weights. (Herschel Walker was the same way, sprints exercises, but no lifting)

Reggie White hated lifting weights, and refused to do it on any kind of regular basis. There was a story of him getting the coaches in GB to let him skip regular weight lifting if he could do some specific weight or reps or something. He went in the weight room, did it, and reportedly never was seen in the weight room again.

I heard that Mike Wahle was a guy who didn't like traditional weight lifting either. In the off season he was said to do things liked flipping huge implement tires, lifting and carrying stones, etc. Should have competed in the Highland games.

I think you heard this, Reggie did not work out.
I remember that White was not strong in the weight room, especially compared to his on field feats. That seems to be correct, or at least there are some comments to that effect.
But I also specifically remember that he did modestly in testing. That is a wrong fact that somehow got implanted in my brain, and has been nurtured lo these many years.
Tretter is both rusty and undersized at guard, and if pbmax doesn't step forward with an apology, I will demand satisfaction.

Sounds like the Packers may be activating a big boy from the practice squad. Josh Walker.
I think they should bring him up even if the starters are active, they could easily reaggravate those injuries.

At least Meredith has been around the block a few times, been in the NFL six years.

We never saw enough of him to know what he was. Never was on GB's roster. He spent a few weeks on PS as a rookie, then was signed away.
I thought about him earlier this week, but saw that he was still with the Colts, They apparently cut him on Tuesday. He has built a career being signed as an emergency backup, then getting released when others get healthy. He has been with 6 other teams, but has never been on the street for more than a couple days before getting signed by someone. Has started a fair amount, mostly for Tampa Bay.
Some articles said he had a reputation as a difficult personality for some coaches to deal with. Here is a JS article from when he was drafted that deals with that:

5th round pick in 2009. Didn't make the team. He was one of the highest picks by TT to be cut as a rookie. I think there was talk his work ethic left something to be desired.

Mike Golic has repeatedly told the story many times that some rookie would beat Reggie's lifting record (could have been a max bench or reps) and they would all run to Reggie, tell him and Reggie would go into the weight room.
He would then reset the record and leave.
Still works with the story that he did not like to lift weights.

He sounds like a better bet than practice squad guy, but I assume he can't be active for tomorrow. Odd. I would be tempted to promote the practice squad guy, if only temporarily.

I will admit to having been somewhat intrigued by what I read about him when GB drafted him, and have tried to keep track of him since. He's a smart kid, had a very high g.p.a. in college. As I recall, he graduated in 4 years, but stayed and played a 5th year. I don't think his work ethic is the problem, although that has been thrown out there in some articles. Others say he works very hard, but he has a lot of interests other than football, is opinionated, and stands up for what he believes. I read one description that said he will question coaches, because he wants to know "why". Some coaches can't deal with that very well, especially if a player is questioning some of the nonsensical things that go on in a locker room..

Yeah, that's the deal.
The other DLineman would make a rib out of the whole thing.
Get some kid to set a weight room record.
Then Reggie would make an appearance.
He do his Muhammad Ali, Rodney Dangerfield impressions and blow the kid's mark away.
Everybody gets a laugh and the rook is now one of the boys.
The whole team is happy and nobody is pissed.
It's an ancient idea now, but I came up around a lot of players that were dead set against lifting. It used to be a school of thought that weights made you stiff and injury prone.

That's right, his rep out of school was thought to be a "locker room lawyer".

Tire flips, loading and lugging ungainly objects make for a real world strength that bench pressing and a lot of other barbell movements can't touch.

With Burnett being downgraded after practice on Saturday, and with the question marks surrounding Sitton and Lang being increased by the signing of Meredith, I am starting to get a bad feeling about this game.
If all three are out, and the Packers still win what is a desperation game for the Bears, I think the Trestman era might be short-lived. I know there are a lot of factors that are out of his control, but he succeeded a coach who was 10-6 the previous year (29-19 the last 3 years) and and went 8-8 and now sits at 3-5. If that goes to 3-6, he might need a miracle finish to the season to save his job.

Awesome. Cutler sure loves throwing to Shields
Hopefully Jay-C throws 4 more on Sunday. But none to Hyde. I promised I'll self-ban from the JSO comment sections if Hyde catches more picks this season than Josh Sitton.
Better start working up your Ban-Fu.

Anybody else remember when McGinn was pumping up the Bears as the new kids on the block who were willing to take chances and sign FA's? Ugh.....about that

McGinn relies on scouts and has next to no football savvy himself. Everyone who knows football well could have told you that the Lions were the team to look out for. Most people on this forum said as much in training camp.

Mike Neal anyone?
